It takes time to master gerunds and infinitives in English. In this lesson, I identify and correct the ten most common mistakes that English learners make with gerunds and infinitives. Do you make any of them? For example, if you want to say that you do not smoke anymore, should you say “I quit smoking” or “I quit to smoke”? Is it “I need go to the bathroom” or “I need to go to the bathroom”? What about the idiomatic phrase “look forward to”? Should you say “I’m looking forward to hear from you” or “I’m looking forward to hearing from you”? Find out, then do the quiz to double check your understanding. www.engvid.com/top-10-mistake...

What do you need to do today? I need to go through this lesson again so I can understand where I need to use ing and where I need to use infinites. 2. What kinds of book do you like to read? I like reading fictional and non fictional stories both. Thanks for sharing. I require one more listing of this video.

Thank you for your useful tips. I have a question: Are the following sentences interchangeable, or is there a difference between them? - I look forward to hearing from you. - I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
@EnglishwithVahid1
@EnglishwithVahid1 27 дней назад
The sentences "I look forward to hearing from you" and "I'm looking forward to hearing from you" are similar but have a slight difference in formality and emphasis. "I look forward to hearing from you." This sentence is more formal and commonly used in professional correspondence, such as emails or letters. It's straightforward and polite. "I'm looking forward to hearing from you." This sentence is slightly less formal and feels more conversational. It conveys a sense of ongoing anticipation and might be more commonly used in personal communication or in professional settings where a slightly less formal tone is appropriate.

Alex, es para saber si correcto decir: "What did you go downtown for?" y que la respuesta sea "For watch a movie" o "For watching a movie"
@engvidAlex
@engvidAlex 2 месяца назад
“What for?” is another way to ask “Why?” “What did you go downtown for?” means “Why did you go downtown?” I would say “To watch a movie” in this case. You could technically say “For watching a movie” (preposition + gerund), but it’s not common in cases like this one.

@EnglishwithVahid1
@EnglishwithVahid1 27 дней назад
Both "I am looking forward to doing" and "I look forward to doing" are correct, but they differ in formality and usage context, similar to the examples you provided earlier. "I am looking forward to doing" This form is in the present continuous tense. It is slightly less formal and conveys a sense of ongoing anticipation. It is often used in spoken English or in written communication where a conversational tone is appropriate. Example: "I am looking forward to meeting you at the conference." "I look forward to doing" This form is in the simple present tense. It is more formal and is typically used in professional or official communication. It is direct and polite. Example: "I look forward to discussing this further in our meeting."

I wonder why nearly all english teachers whether they be foreigners or natives focus on mistakes in their lessons. Foreign language teaching methods and approaches advise not to make a mistake as the starting point. Regards to everybody learning this comment
@engvidAlex
@engvidAlex 2 месяца назад
Good question! It’s a way for a learner to refine their knowledge and skills. Perfection is not the goal-gradual improvement is. These types of mistakes are also good to be aware of if you’re using English at the professional or academic level. Otherwise, a lot of careful reading and a lot of careful listening will help learners to develop these structures naturally.

I pick up a lot of corrections from this style of teaching. In the past, gerunds and infinitives used to be a problem for me, but after watching many of these types of videos, I have understood gerunds to be (V + doing something, e.g., He likes doing something (eating)) and infinitives (V + to do something, e.g., He likes to do something (eat)).
