My mom was a L.P.N for many many years. She is an "old school" nurse. VERY hands on. To her, bedside manner is just as important as the medicine you take. When she went to work at Lowel women's Correctional facility in Florida, she had to learn how to be a nurse, without touching the inmate. The inmates LOVED my mother, but the doctors and nurses HATED her. She was a big advocate for the prisoners, because she DID NOT like the way the prisoners were treated. She worked there for almost ten years before she was forced out because she actually cared about the prisoners and their rights. She ended her nursing carreer working end of life care at Hospice. The hardest thing my mom had to deal with at the prison, was not being allowed to touch her patients. As I said, my mom was very hands on. If she cant rub your back, or just touch on you, its like torture for her.😂 If everyone had a mother like mine, there wouldn't be a need for prisons...I was so so lucky to get her as a mom and if I was sick, I would want her as my nurse...❤❤❤

I just resigned from my bedside RN position. Just like you, I am an anxious person so my anxiety was through the roof. It was so bad that on my days off when I thought about work I would start crying. Reason I went into bedside is because I felt that if I did not get that experience then I was not a "real nurse". I have come to accept that bedside is not for me and it is ok and I am still a nurse no matter where I go. Now I need to look for a J.O.B., but most importantly find a position where I am happy and focus on providing safe patient care.

I hope you read this! Lol - thanks for the vid! How long was your orientation? I'm possibly about to start at a correctional facility and I'm excited and nervous. I am the same in that I don't love bedside... I never worked on a med-surg floor per se. I worked at a LTACH, which was like a respiratory "ICU stepdown" type floor. Definitely learned a lot, but then I got an OR job that I only lasted 3 weeks at because I ended up moving the first week and the commute was way too far. I also did psych for about 4 months prior to all this! So yeah, I'm sort of scattered and don't know where to go. But I def. want to try out the correctional nursing, but I heard my orientation would only be for 3 days? That seems too short, no?

@@bnsmathis10 Overall, not bad! The inmates were not even the problem for me. It was dealing with the system. Waiting on officers to get in the room, needing a key for evvverything, paper charting, and security tops healthcare. So you may need to see a patient, but if it’s count time or you have a lazy officer, too bad it’ll have to wait. But in my experience the inmates were respectful and just glad to have decent care.

@@Tristandenman question for you...do you think a woman can do it with the same respect from the patients? Or do you think it's better for a man? (Honest question- no offense taken to either answer. Just wondering if it's as safe for women)

@nancinew8288
@nancinew8288 2 года назад
@@livingmyjameslifeRN Okay. Here are the reasons I love it. First of all, I was working in the jail as an agency nurse and the money was really really good. I was nervous at first because I never worked a jail before but the staff were great and I got to know the inmates and they were great- most of them. You got the hateful mean ones in the psych floor- but for the most part the inmates were great. I treated them with respect and without judgement and they respected me as well. I worked evening shift and all I did was pass meds for lots of pay as a travel nurse. Most of the corrections officers were great too. Sometimes I worked the treatment team where the inmates came in for wound care and treatments and that was really fun too. Of course there were problems because every job has them, but it ended up being one of my favorite jobs ever. I had to leave because I didn’t take the jab. I’m hoping to go back one day. Also, I’ve been a nurse for 15 years so I got burned out on all the bedside nursing so these types of options are fun for something new. But if you are a new grad you definitely want to get at least a year in med/surge to really get a good start in your career. Hope this helps 😀

hey Liked and subbed I start Nursing school in a few weeks I'm doing the LVN/ASN associates degree program offered at a University in Southern california. it's a 17-month program I am super excited about it I have a good friend who retired from correctional nursing he also liked it a lot. he was a state correctional employee R.N. he got state retirement and state benefits etc.. he was making really good money, he also advised me to grab one year of Emergency department experience with like maybe a trauma team or an E/R/ team so I can develop some good nursing skills and then apply at the correctional nursing job I told him that sounds like a winning strategy for me. I served in the U.S. Marines for many years and now I am trying to get into Nursing as a career and I am super excited about it. thank you for your video, this was very well done, a lot of good information here.

As a new grad, I'm very interested in this kind of job. It's a different side of nursing that you don't see everyday. However, being a new grad also comes with a lot of questions regarding this setting. 1. Do correctional facilities offer additional training or orientation? 2. Is there any teamwork or do you tend to work by yourself? I know some long-term care new grad nurses that had to work by themselves on the unit and didn't have anyone to go to when they had questions. 3. I heard some facilities have an infirmary, what are the nurses duties in that setting? 4. And if there's no infirmary, where are you usually stationed at to do your work? 5. How many patients do you usually have per shift? 6. What's the difference between jail, prison, etc? 7. Who usually does the initial assessments when there's a new detainee or inmate? Provider, RN, LPN? Thank you in advance to whoever can answer my questions...and pardon me for more questions to come (I'm really curious and interested) 😅

I never really thought about correctional nursing; thank you for this information. I currently work long term care for spinal cord injury - what you describe in your job is a little similar to what I do. I do have a question for you; since you work night shift, are you receiving a shift differential? I did watch your video on Why I quit my nursing job; you lasted a lot longer on your first nursing job than I did; I quit my first nursing job after 7 weeks, still in orientation, do to the very toxic environment of the med surg/tele floor. I never new who my actual preceptor would be that day. I am happy for you that you enjoy your current position.
