As a Trinidadian living abroad 30 years now, it hurts my heart to see the state of the country. I saw this documentary 9 years ago and was ashamed to see our country featured on Vice News. Nine years on and the crime, corruption and murder rates have erupted further and gangs have increased x10. The politicians(PNM & UNC), the rich and upper levels of law enforcement are corrupt and they are in charge so there’s no end in sight! God help Trinidad 🇹🇹. 😢😢😢🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️😢😢😢
10:40 - "I've been charged for murder, guns and ammunition & none of it stick because it's all fabricated lies!" Rewind to 10:06 & see said man standing tall & proud with rifle in hand, then announcing to the nation that he just overthrew the government. LOL
That man, Spanish, seems a little sketchy and I don't entirely buy his claims of being only a 'community leader'. But gang leader or not, he is a positive force in an otherwise hopeless situation.
Remember what Yasin, leader of the Muslim faction, said about how *everyone* is involved? Police, politicians, government contracted workers, etc. Although, maybe it's cynical to insinuate that Spanish is in some way involved in all the corruption and turf wars.
I went to Trinidad with my girlfriend almost two years ago now. Stayed right in Port of Spain, it wasn't THAT bad we wandered around, met some really nice people, even went downtown to the main market street where we were literally the only white people and it just felt like a busy bustling city. We even met some guys while waiting for the Ferry to Tobago who said they were part of some gang, and gave us tips where to not go and stay away from east city. Everywhere you go in the world there will be bad spots and people you don't want to get involved with, you just need to know and follow your gut, obviously going to places like Iraq or Somalia would be dumb, but places with reputations such as this, don't let it fear you.
That's every country bro. But in all honesty, Somalia is not bad, I would say 90% of the country is peaceful.. The civil war stopped 2006, don't believe everything you hear or see on the news. Book yourself a holiday there and you will see it's absolutely beautiful and peaceful.. ✌✊💯 🇸🇴🇸🇴
Strongfp I'm glad you didn't believe the bullshit, hype and fear this video may instill in others. Trinidad is mostly peaceful and just like many other places contains good and bad. And another thing; they always lump all the murders together making it seem that all are 'gang' related or drug related when many times they stems from domestic disputes, neighborhood disputes, land disputes, old grievances, minor fallings-out turned fatal, unintentional rum fuelled murders and family squabbles.
@@chadmodeste2758 so true Port of Spain isnt listed in the 50 most dangerous cities in the world nor do T&T listed in 20 most dangerous countries in the world.
thank you very much. sounds like the world. its just really really bad because its such a small country with this problem on such a large scale out in the open.
***** it doesnt elate my mood as you say. i dont hide my country's problems. every country has problems. if you havent noticed there are comments about it being a shitty country and a black country with black country problems. i would not have ranted about you living here either even without your 'lovely' history lesson about yourself. i could care less if you became a doctor, a pope, or was a drop out as it has nothing to do with your question to me. if i had to hide my country's problems i would not watch this video or comment because id be in great denial. i do live here and deal with this shit every day as well as see its beauty. my comment was in regards to someone pointing out that other countries have flaws as well and all these people that watch this a look down on the country because they think where they live is sadly mistaken. of course my problems would ver be your problems wherever you are and yours may not be mine but at the end of they day they all have issues that need to be worked out. and i for the life of me dont know why i need to know how much of your class was indian. 100% of your class could be indian and it would not change anything i've said so please do explain yourself further if im just too simple to comprehend.

I was working in Trinidad for 2 years, 2006-2008, I had the time of my life, so many friendly people, and what a party. There was a lot of poverty, that was clear. The Oil and Gas does not reach the average person. It's too corrupt. So very sad, Trinidad could be the most beautiful gem of the whole Caribbean.
Yes me Bridget tell the truth Trinidad is a lovely place but you see how people try to come out there and make them look bad them people go to uniform School notice they didn't show you them type of versions only rode through impoverished areas at least what they have left impoverished because you know Trinidad and Tobago a go billup
@@originalunoriginal4055 clearly you dint knew Trinidad' there are no 'tourist' areas, it is NOT a tourist island! It is actually one of the top eclectic destinations in the world that doesn't cater to tourists, you visit and you get on board and experience everything just as locals , and trinidad criminals do not target foreigners .
It’s sad to see the effect of narco activity on the environment and the people in Costa Rica. When I traveled there as a teenager in the 2000 everyone was extremely hospitable and we all felt safe.

"if your kidney is cancerous, and you ignore it to focus on the healthy parts, you will die. And the nation is dying because we're treating a part of us like it will dry up and go away." That is probably the realest shit I've ever heard. There is no better metaphor. Like damn.
It is funny and depressing that if I didn't see the dates I would of thought this was shot recently, 8 years and the same old story on repeat. As a young Trinidadian this is just sooo damn depressing
I went back to Trinidad for 14 months last year, from the UK , the fact of the matter is this documentary is spot on. Sometimes patriotism blinds us to the negative aspects of our country the facts speak for themselves ie. Trinidad with 1.5 million people has a higher murder rate than Britain with 62 million people, This year there is already 189 murders and its only the 6th of June, romanticism of our country leads to a denial of reality.
When I saw Trinidad in the title, I was like , this is a must watch. There's crime, corruption every where in the world though. My friend left T&T and came 🇬🇩 to attend high school, after graduation in 2003, he returned home and was gunned down within months.
Damn as a Trinidadian watching this made me extremely sad. I lived there during and after the coup and i have to say the place did change. What can we do when everyone is blaming everyone else?
I went this year and had a wonderful time. Perfectly safe. I think there is a huge class divide in T&T. There are all the middle class and wealthy neighborhoods and upscale malls and restaurants, clubs, parties, all the beaches, nature and countryside etc. Then you have the ghettos of Lavantille, Morvant, Sea Lots and Beetham with a totally different environment. Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its many violent inner cities and meth filled trailer parks. T&T is the wealthiest nation in the English Speaking Caribbean because of the oil, gas, manufacturing, trade and finance sectors, it does not even have to depend on tourism like other islands (though it gets lots of visitors for Carnival) but there is deep wealth inequality and corruption. There is also unbridled immigration from other poorer Caribbean islands.
What does the Bahamas and Puerto Rico produce? I know they are huge tax havens but the money invested there does not belong to the citizens there or their Government but to wealthy foreigners. Wealth is measured by the indigenous natural resources and Gross Domestic Product of the territory.
I gone in princess town at the mall and went to the bathroom and I pise in the toilet I look back to open the door bam in my face a gay righting I gone to my mom and told her a gay man was in the bathroom she said so what
I noticed that the people of trinidad looks pretty intelligent. even the gang members have some really important story to share with us all. That last part was really deep. My prayers go out to these people, it's a shame their country is affected like this. i hope someday it will change.
Speaking truthfully it isn't as bad as it's depicted here. The majority of Trinidad is safe for the most part. There are only a few areas that are really violent against one another though gangs.
This is showing one side of Trinidad and Tobago and admittedly it is awful. However, I lived and worked in Wooodbrook for donkey years. As a female, I felt safe walking to and from my office and apartment, even at night. Never had a single incident. My colleagues, friends, old school mates in Blue Range, Cascade, St. Anns, Westmoorings, Trinicity, Palmiste, Sando and Penal, all professionals, family men and women also never had violent run-ins with crime. Minor attempted burglaries and car break-ins which happens even in the US, UK and Canada may happen from time to time. Simply put there are TWO Trinidad divided down the middle by class. They don't usually overlap. If you are not living in the depressed areas or are involved in any illegal activity or Government bobal that can lead to being snuffed out, chances are your day goes on with little incident, save the minor misfortunes that could happen anywhere in the world. It's like judging all of Chicago by just the South Side or all of LA by Compton, which would be silly.
About time y’all make a next video about Trinidad 🇹🇹. The country has progressively gotten worst and it would be great to see behind the scenes of why the country is getting worse and other stuff🙏🏼

"Literally, a few thousand people have been killed in these areas. We need help. Because We don't see here as part of Trinidad. We see here as a sore, a diseased part that we wish would go away. I tell people, if your left kidney is cancerous and you ignore it, it will kill you. If you focus on the parts of your body that are healthy and you say, that left kidney is just a pain and a bother, you are going to die. And the nation is dying because we're treating a part of us as though it will go away and dry up one day." - Hal Greaves, Community Activist.
The gentleman said 500 murder for the year and I'm looking at Jamaica like "So what we doing here?" Look like we love gold medal and must win everything... 😥😭😭😭
jamaica has a bigger population so that's why Trinidad is seen as more violent, our federal government has labeled trinidad as the most dangerous country in the Caribbean
It's not ignorant or hateful, some people simply have difficulty understanding and hearing dialects they have never heard before with rich accents. Vice has given subtitles to people who speak clearer standard English than in this video. Even Americans and Brits with heavy accents.
I'm a born and raised Trinidadian, a proud proud one at that. A beautiful country with beautiful people. The fact is the corruption in the government leads to most of the high end crime and drugs. The gangs that fight over block sized territory do so under the watchful eye of local police who turn their eyes when a hit or kidnapping benefits them or their party. It's disgusting to see how the murder rate continues to climb. I have well over 300 family members and friend still living there. I pray for them everyday, just as I do for the entire country. Only international intervention can help us now
What a great time to be alive in Trinidad guys, am I right? Seriously though, our country is in desperate need of change. I only hope the younger generation sees this and doesn't run to another country to escape but instead stays and tries to repair the damage caused by the corrupt generations.
The reason he has alot of money is because he has his own tv show and is the leader of dangerous task forces, so he is paid quite alot by the government.
p1ner0 You'd be surprised how few locals actually do coke. Most of the drugs just pass through. That 'doobie', I'm told, is a local phenomenon called a 'roll-on' which is just a joint 'rolled on' to the end of a cigarette. Waste not, want not.
The politicians there didn't give the gangs construction jobs to share Trinidads oil wealth, they gave them those jobs to launder their drug money. Why else would gangs increase in size in those neighborhoods and why else would the crime rate then skyrocket. Drugs and money people.
Dhawal Pawar that’s how we do it back home. Ganga isn’t the same as it is in North America. We meditate and silence ourselves and that’s how our higher self tells us how to elevate ourselves and the Environment around us.
I'm not sure, it's been six years ago but definitely most ppl in in that video are dead already if your gangsters, gangsters last a maximum of 1yr out here so definitely that whole gang at the beginning of the video may ver well be all dead by now and replaced
@18:20 I like how the gangster in the back was about to put his beer down, just to pick it back up and toast with the white interviewer because he, the gangster, wanted to. Just little acts of kindness that go unnoticed in everyday life, such as that little toast, put a smile on my face.
