A short explanation of the geological features which combined with tidal and wind conditions produce the turbulence in and around the Gulf of Corryvreckan.
The 3d models were created using bathymetry data produced in 2013 which show the buttress of basalt rock which can, under the right conditions, produce one large vortex.
The area in and around the Gulf of Corryvreckan has deep valleys which drop to as low as 245 metres in some places.
Due to the deep valleys the area is also used for submarine training exercises.
