I think the highway one strats are the best value out there. It's essentially an American Standard which is the just as much guitar as anyone could need really, BUT it has a thin Nitro Finish, which is really hard to get without paying for an American Vintage or Custom Shop (I don't think the AVs are even full nitro). Swap the pickups to whatever you want, and you have an amazing guitar for like $1,000. I can't believe he bought one for $300 lol.

I'm really surprised hes not using a Hiwatt or one of the similar designs that have nothing but clean headroom for days. I love compression and I have an optical diamond compressor CLONE and an Empress MKii compressor (Silver version) permanently on my board (i also build tons of pedals so my board doesnt allow anything unless its absolutely nessesary) and I cant even begin to understand how I went as long as I did without a compressor pedal lol. Anyways back to the Hiwatt (or Sovtek Mig 50 type head argument) they are really great clean platforms that can get any imaginable sound with some pedals and since the have all the clean headroom it really simplifies things in my opinion. But take that with a grain of salt since I've never owned one and had the chance to play it day in and day out for a few years. Right now I pretty much exclusively use my Marshall DSL100HR since its affordable but incredibly versatile and does great cleans unlike many Marshall amps and of course it can do the JCM 800 thing very well. So Plexi and JCM 800 sounds in one amp and I honest to dog wouldnt trade it for either one of those amps unless I was allowed to turn around and sell it for another DSL100HR. I also bought a Hammond filter choke from Mouser 6 months ago and installed it in the DSL to great effect (and I was only like $20, which is great compared to most overpriced "boutique" chokes and transformers. I even posted a review/tutorial about installing the choke on Marshall Amp Forum if anyone is interested. I use my real name there also. Anyways really cool to see what Cory Wong uses considering it's impossible to guess under all that compression lol. But it works great for that funk jazz style and if it sounds good that's justification enough.

Cory is very talented and his fundamentals are second to none. He definitely knows what gear will work for his sound. Seems like a really cool dude too. So glad we have someone like him in the guitar world, shows that you can blaze your own trail if you work hard at it. Thank you for the excellent video. Cheers to Cory for sharing . Best and most practical advice I think I've ever heard about the approach to gear requirements. His views make a tremendous amount of sense and cuts through alot of the gear marketing currently out there. Everyone should hear his opinions

Just got the Neural DSP Cory Wong Plug in.. AWESOME!

His sound, sounds as 'compressed' and a 'new' as Nile Rodgers sounded 35 years ago. Strat into a Marshall 'Super Lead' amp, into a 4x12 cab was what Nile used back then. There's nothing new under the sun.
