Thank you for the explanation. I was having trouble moving things around to get to the answer. The textbook just does it in 3 moves to get the answer without explaining anything.

Depends on your exam board and level. Check out the formula book/sheet issued with your exam. I would however encourage you to learn them regardless though.

@hannapaisley I think I now see your problem. Type in the top line press equals as i think you are doing. Now press divide but use a bracket and enter the bottom line. Close bracket and press equals. Hope that works for you now.

are you putting the top and bottom in brackets (5.8+6.1-6.9) (all squared) / (2*5.8*6.1)

If a^2, b^2 or c^ is the subject, it will always be length. If the Cosθ is the subject, it will be the formula for the angle. Mess around changing the subject from length (a^2, b^2, c^2) to angle (cosθ) using algebra and back again to get used to it.

@hannapaisley Make sure your calculator is in degrees mode. You should see a D on the screen for most calculators. Use the fraction button if not make sure you use brackets. Try again and see if you get the answer this time.

simple.....u are defying mathematics with the way u use the calculator.....keep it in fractional form then do the numerator and denominator separately and then divide. OR u can simply use brackets on the calculator :)

I was completing a mock paper with my class the other day and I had a question given all 3 sides of the triangle and was asked to work out the largest angle, I was confused, how do I know which sides to label a, b and c?

Order of operations: 1. exponents and roots 2. multiplication and division 3. addition and subtraction But you probably know that by now xD
