Cosmic Queries - Cosmological Curiosities with Neil deGrasse Tyson

What is nothing? Does nothing exist? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore cosmological curiosities about the end of the universe, dark matter, and more!
What happens in an expanding universe where galaxies get too far away from each other? Is there a way to survive a Big Rip? If matter only takes up 5 percent of the universe, are we the anomaly? We discuss the Copernican principle and whether we are special. Could we be in a cycling universe that expands and collapses or is expansion just a one way trip?
Does dark matter interact with anything beside gravity? Could it be possible for humans to create a black hole in order to study it? How big would an Earth-mass black hole be? Why do galaxies in the universe form a sponge structure when everything else creates disks? Learn about the Coma Cluster and how it helped us discover dark matter.
What would someone looking at us from 65 million light years see? What is nothing? We discuss the definition of nothing and whether we can wrap our heads around the concept. And finally, we explore The Matrix and whether our robot overlords could use humans as energy.

No! Even if this claim was true and such moment would take place in unforeseeable future, it still would be way too far from us even to think about it. And I find it funny that you, Dr Tyson, only take questions from patreon. Basically, "show me the money" comes before curiousity and science. I would be happy to pay for each question separately, if I trusted you (or any science populizer foe that matter) would genuinely address them. But I know what would happen instead. I would ask a question about the problems with, let's say, Vacuum, and I would explain what exactly are the problems with facts, and you would simply reject aļl of that as delusion or misinformation and with simple declarations about how science looks at Vacuum today would finish the answer. So, I would have spent my money and have nothing. In a way, I would feel that the money was stolen from me as I already know the official answers of science. So, if there is no open discussion with challanges, and I have to pay to hear what I can read for free in any science book, then what is the point of all of this...
@jurisbogdanovs1
@jurisbogdanovs1 9 месяцев назад
I would like you, Neil, to think about possibility that one day all those arguments and facts I keep bringing up might become the accepted theories. And science educators and scientists would be asked, why they didn't see and address those problems and solutions that were in front of our eyes? And then many scientists would realise that they have been bombarded with these questions for years but they ignored them because the person who asked them didn't pay for the answer... And, unfortunately, I even sent you some of my books, Neil!!! Yet, you remain ignorant to that. And problems with Redshift are explained in that book of mine too - WHERE DOES THE UNIVERSE AND LIFE COME FROM.

Hi Dr. Tyson and Lord Chuck 🙂Absolutely love the show! I have a silly question 😅 what would happen to black holes when big rip would get to them? Since singularity is an infinite mass in space how would that rip divide infinity? Would they maybe create an anchor, slowing down expansion in that region? Or would they just explode as the sheer force dark energy would overcome infinite density? Thank you
@tyroneallen7857
@tyroneallen7857 9 месяцев назад
Your question is imaginary because you said space. Science rebukes imagination. Read more nonfiction. For example, time equals energy and energy equals mass times the speed of light squared, no space. Space is science-fiction based on human imagination. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a pseudo scientist. The most perfect example of how time works is the sun. we are our star. For example, the sun is day. How old are you?

Regarding the Matrix, the whole "humans = batteries" plot could have been made so much better if humans were used as the computational aspect of the matrix, at least in part. It would mean Neo is able to change "reality" by altering the computation in real time...because he's hooked up to the matrix and it's using his brain (among everyone else's) to run the simulation. It gives an actual functional reason as to why he's able to do what he does.
@TheNickjhaight

I believe - but I'm not positive - that that was the original story but, from what I've been told, the writer (or studio or whatever) didn't think audiences would be able to grasp human beings being used for computational power rather than electrical power.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the latest thinking on dark matter is that it might actually weakly interact with itself. Weakly enough that it could have formed "dark stars" in the early universe that accounts for what appear to be galaxies before galaxies should have formed but not strongly enough to clump together in the less dense conditions of the universe today.

From what I heard, the whole story is that the original script said that the matrix used human brains for their processing power as microchips. But the execs vetoed that saying that the public wouldnt understant it... It made no sense physically so the W tried their best by adding that line. Worst : it didn't make ANY sense storywise. The whole point of the Matrix is to be a product of the human mind with its imagination, dreams and delusions...

Long live Lord Chuck. Cosmic Queries... favorite type of episode. Nothing is better in science than posing fascinating question after question about things we don't yet understand. It stimulates the imagination. Gets you thinking about what's possible. My favorite question to ponder now is the question of whether our universe is a simulation. I find that question to be perhaps the most important question of all, and also perhaps the hardest question to answer. All we see and feel... it could all be a fabrication. There is no proof that anything is "real." I hope we think of how to test this.
