@@AManOnline. looking through these comment is like talking to a whole room of people who got way too high and I'm the only sober one getting more and more high from the smell
Anyone else notice how the audio changes and degrades at the end of the song, until it becomes unrecognizable? Seems like a parallel to how stories dissolve and get forgotten
Sheldrake: "But have you heard the story of the rabbit and the moon? Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon, or she who leapt the mountains while whistling up a tune and swapped her songs with swallows while riding on her broom? Now we can all learn things, both many and a few, from the old hunched up woman who lived inside a shoe. For the girl who sang by day, and by night she ate tear soup, or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers' droop." Me: I like your funny words, magic man
I think that’s the point of the song honestly. Everyone trying to dissect the meaning of the song, but I don’t think even Sheldrake knows what it means. Hence “Nobody knew and nobody knows.”
From a musicians stand point it’s most likely the harmonies that got you. “Nobody knew and nobody knows” is accented by a series of harmonies bringing it to your attention and just sounding fantastic to the ears
I love all of the references to Edward Lear's nonsense poems in the second verse! For anyone who is not familiar with his works, here's a list of the references and the poems to which they correspond: "Nobody knew and nobody knows, how the pobble was robbed of his twice five toes." A line taken directly from the poem "The Pobble Who Has No Toes" "Or how the dong came to own a luminous nose." Referring to the poem "The Dong With The Luminous Nose" (which is neither sexual nor having anything to do with Rudolph, lol) "Or how the jumblies went to sea in a sieve that they rowed, and came to shore by the chankly bore, where the bong trees grow" Referring to the poem "The Jumblies" "And the quangle wangle plays, in the rain and the snow" Referring to the poem "The Quangle Wangle's Hat" Hope this was helpful to at least someone :)
My interpretation of this song is that it's reminding the listener that while it's good to learn and remember factual information, it's also worthwhile to remember folklore and have an active imagination.
I thought also that it's like In the olden times folklore was out science In the future we'll know all the ways our current science, albeit more true than folklore of course, is very wrong and biased It's just knowledge all of it
Three types of commenters: 1. Tries to find the meaning of the song 2. Random comments about how he is secretly I time traveler fae god. 3. Being chaotic and making puns and shit
in love with the way new fans of cosmo are finding this song and trying to dissect it because it reminds me of the fact that when i discovered him, back in maybe 2017, i simply thought “huh. he’s nuts.” and then listened to pelicans we on repeat for 3 weeks. you all make me feel dumb and old.
Who else can't stop listening to this? And, who else is thinking about animating this song? It needs more love. (This next part is from June 2020) I've seen the animation of this already. Wow. I didn't expect this comment to get so popular. Wow. How time flies eh?
3 types of commenters 1. The ones who tear down the meaning of the song 2.the ones who claim the author is an immortal omnipresent deity who lives the life of a folkist. 3. Krankle wangle
Same! For me, it's something I think happened, but I know I *shouldn't remember it.* To elaborate, I was only a few months old. My next oldest memory is when I was around four years old. The memory I'm talking about is so distant it's silent. I just remember my mother holding my hand and the fact she was reading to me while I was just staring out the window at a bright full moon. That memory is one of my clearest and is definitely my oldest. I don't know why I remember it so well, but I do.
I’m 6 years late... Cosmo will most likely never see this. But I’ve never heard a song in my short life that has spoken to me so much. The lyrics are so random, and some of the things it’s talking about are more intense than others, witch is what I really love about it. I can actually relate to this song, not from the lyrics but the theme. I’ve had a really bad childhood and I’ve had bad flashbacks to it, but whatever is going on in this song really helped me get over my bad past. And even though the future isn’t looking bright for me, I’ll just listen to this song, and it will motivate me to push through whatever gets thrown at me. I know all the lyrics by heart and I’ve listened to it on repeat for hours on end. It never gets old. I’ve loved this song for almost a year and every time I listen to it, it gets better. It also gives me inspirations for my novel series that I’m working hard on... and the chaotic and sad things that happen tie to this song well. Whenever I hear it I can imagine the characters fighting or a traveling or talking or a really sad sene. Idk, I’m probably insane. I love this song. I’ve listened to all your songs. Can’t stop listening to it. I’ve also heard the demo version. It also speaks to me a lot too. Thank you.
This is the one song I never get tired of somehow. It gives me nature/fantasy vibes and fits the story I’m writing so darn well. It makes me feel better in just a few seconds after a 1 -hour mental breakdown. And it absolutely bops! I guess I’ve truly found a favorite song, and that’s coming from someone who’s highly indecisive and can never have one exact answer!
It sounds to me like this is about humanity after a post-apocalyptic event, just now discovering old facts and legends that get blown out of proportion, turning into major cultural events and religious holidays
I thought more like how these science things are all hypothesized like photosynthesis then he comes out with folklore saying well if those things can be true why can't these they both help you one way or another
The meaning I find: It's simple really; we may learn a fair bit from "common knowledge" or old mill rumors, such as the idea of moss always growing north or using saltwater to care for jellyfish wounds, but that doesn't mean that fantastical stories are not valuable to learn from too. Baba Yaga, Hansel and Gretal, the Snow Queen, The Rabbit in the Moon, all of these stories and more teach us things that no facts ever could: empathy, compassion, courage, caution, and many more lessons for childhood. And the best part? Unlike commonly-known facts and home remedies, these tales don't necessarily need a "purpose"; they can simply be and teach the reader whatever moral they wish. After all, what is the main moral to the Jabberwocky? Or The Little Mermaid? Or the Cow who hopped around the Planets? _"Nobody knew and nobody knows."_ Because *_you_* are the one who decides what the moral is, what you take away from it.
The meaning. I think I got it. So the song starts with "legends", which in this case are sayings that grow increasingly scientific in nature: we go from the may-or-may-not be true sayings that "moss grows on the north side of the trees" and "when the rain comes down all the worms come up to breathe" to descriptions of photosynthesis and the Earth's tilted axis. Now, these are things that have practical value. They explain how to find you way in the woods and how the world works. The increasing focus on the scientific represents how humanity has come to value reason more than most anything else. But then the chorus challenges the idea that the scientific or reasonable is the only thing of value. The chorus is a plethora of references to different folk stories and nursery rhymes, some of which at one point had practical value but now all can be classified as ridiculous yet entertaining myths. While these stories may not be "practical" in the same way that knowledge of photosynthesis is, they still have worth because they teach morals, a willingness to sometimes accept things that don't make sense, and culture. The referenced myths actually come from several different cultures, thus indicating that studying these stories helps us to connect to other people. I think the singer is right: "we can all learn things, both many and a few", from a mother goose nursery rhyme, a modern folk take, or even an old wives' tale about erectile disfunction (look up "Brewer's Droop" - or rather, don't). The point is, this song is about appreciating the old myths and stories that shaped who we are as people and as our respective culture, because those things are just as important as the sciences that help us understand the natural world. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
I feel like this song was written for people who suffer from existential crisis like me I learned too much about the universe and how all atoms will one day be unable to keep together and how all light will disappear forever. And it will happen, I kind of lost my will to live But when I found this song it made me realize something. When the song starts it talks about facts like the moss growing on the north side of trees, the world spinning on an axis of 23 degrees and the like in a slow and accepting way. But when the second part hits, he sings in an energetic and happy way about such unrealisticly abstract stuff like a cow jumping from planet to planet while strandling a spoon. As I heard those lines I kinda started laughing while tearing up, it reminded me of myself, looking at the far bigger picture instead of just zooming in and enjoyin my life. This song cured my existential crisis
This fits me perfectly I just love the universe and quantum fysics. But as you did I learnt too much and had the biggest existential crisis. I do not remember how I got over it but it is good to see that it is not only me.
How can you say with certainty that he's the best undiscovered artist to ever live the earth? There may be others even better who are yet to be discovered, lol. He is pretty darn good though, lol.

I think I read something somewhere that there was a rabbit who tried to kill itself to be the Buddha's food, but the Buddha didn't let it and instead rewarded it by putting it in the moon or something like that
@@evo_is_confused in Mexico, there was a battle of Gods to see who got to be the sun. A very buff and handsome God threw himself into the fire pit and a sun appeared in the sky, but a very ugly and short God did too, this making two suns. Then, another God literally threw a rabbit onto one of the suns to make it a moon. Moral of the legend: everybody has a sun inside
this song is a perfect example of a song that makes me feel that im longing for something. But this feels like im longing for someone, who hates me. Or the other way around. Like they are so close yet so out of reach. I truly cant describe it
it's the urge to lie down in the dirt and just listen to your surroundings, craving the peaceful and serene quietness that we know exists we just never have the time to find it
I get a really strong sense of slightly bitter anemoia from this. Those are the only words I’ve been able to find that properly describe the feeling. It’s got ‘ancient creature channeling the reminiscent power of an old world that you’ll never be able to experience because it’s lost to time’ vibes
Based a dnd character of mine on this song. They're a two hundred-year old gnome druid with a multiclass into bard, who wandered the wide earth for as long as they can remember, writing down all sorts of folk stories, legends and facts. In the last 70 years, they settled down on a small farm, near a village called Carrotshore, and were known as "the weird old guy". Every night, they would stay up at a campfire, while excited kids ran up to them, giggling and asking the old man to tell them another one of their stories. And of course they did. For once, getting to share all of the contents of their notebook was priceless to them. Knowing that the stories of old would be remembered for another generation... and so passed 70 years, feeling like a blink of an eye to the old druid. The kids that they knew are now old as well, everyone knows that the druid's some sort of mage. But to this day, small kids run to the bonfire on the farm and excitedly ask for another story. Some children knew how to play some instruments. And so, together they made a song about all the wonderful things the old druid has heard. Until one day, an evil, greedy and miserable king thought that the old druid was corrupting the village's kids with magic. And then he burned the village down. As the druid watched from afar, tears streamed down their eyes. But there was no choice left now, was there? The druid wasn't all that strong. They brought fertility to the land, and warded off wild animals, but that was all that they could do. And so the druid walked away, humming an old tune that they made up with some kids. The druid walked away with their notebook, in search of new stores to write down, and a new place to settle. Holy shit i love this song to absolute bits
Really?! it took me 1 search to find it -w- i just picked the most sensible words i heard at the time which was The Moss lol nah it was "Legend has it that"
I always get vivid memories of playing in the wildflower fields and the tall trees by the creek when I was young listening to this song. I can't do that anymore though, I live in a neighborhood now. Dangit.
It’s interesting how he calls facts “legends,” while he goes on to explain nursery rhymes and poems as “stories.” Like, photosynthesis and the world spinning round on an axis of 23 degrees start as “legend has it,” as if they’re just mystical phenomenon that no one cares about. But all the nursery rhymes and poems begin with “But have you heard about the story of...” as if they’re actual events that are more important. It’s incredible how he managed to invoke that sense of childlike wonder by entertaining the thought that seemingly nonsense stories take priority over basic facts, kind of how a kid would imagine it. Edit: Guys I know the facts aren’t exactly correct. It doesn’t change much about the meaning. In fact, it adds to my theory that this takes place from the perspective of a child. A child wouldn’t know the exact details about these facts (how the moss doesn’t always grow on the north side of trees, the axis is technically 23.5 degrees, etc.) they would just know the basics of what adults told them.
He's probably in a pocket dimension where facts are fantasies and fantasies/nursery rhymes are things that were real and are told as if his grandfather told him that he saw those things with his own eyes
i swear this man is some sort of interdimensional forest god or something that talks with fairies and animals and has learned the way of the moss and decided to sing about it
This song makes me think of a weird ass dream I had: *I was by this weird abandoned building and I was really sad and there was this black cat and yellow snake who were talking in whispers until the cat took me somewhere in the woods. It was grey and cloudy, I couldn't tell exactly what time it was. He took me to this weird ledge that had a rectangle pool of water a ways down and told me to jump into it. I told him that I knew something was going to go wrong and he hesitated, then after that we just laid on the ground and talked.* Also, the water was black.
I think the cat was trying to tempt u to do something, and that going into the pool would’ve hurt u in some way but when u refused he decided not to, snakes in general have a bad rep often being seen as untrustworthy and slippery, it’s also a symbol of the devil, but they represent change flexibility and growth yellow snakes in particular symbolise wisdom and intellect ( this could link back to u not taking a rash decision) black cats are commonly seen as very spiritual and very bad luck, I think those two talking where either conspiring against u( bc of both the black cats and snakes bad rep) or it was symbolising your good and bad luck/fortune/maybe it was your guardian angel and the devil (snake as good as that’s its actual symbol and cat as bad) not being able to tell the time could also be that the cat was trying to trick or mislead u, im very sure that dreams can sometimes be dangerous as I’ve suffered consequences from dreams before and I think u where very smart to not do as the cat told u
I don't think I've ever seen an animal in my dreams, I remember I "met" My dead grandma, I've never met her but we talked and hugged then the dream ended, you know like an Anime. One time I was walking to the store with my family but got lost and I met some random kids (about 4 or 3, I think their were like 2 boys and like 1 girl or 2), they were nice and fun to play with, I played tag and the building around us looked like old buildings and their was a bridge than was above us and had 2 staircase up to it and we ran around a lot then when it turned dawn I said goodbye and went to my family(I don't remember if they were worried or not, I think they scolded me but let me off the hook) and went home. One time me and my brother heard an ice cream truck and we got my money and ran out but we saw some kids that were doing something and we ran to them to check what's up but then we were teleported(or something) to a weird place that was really bright with a light yellow backround all over and a bunch of tiles that were different colors when we walked on a tile we would travel through different universes on each tile, there was a universe where we didn't exist or school was a store or where we replaced the "us" in one of the universes and it ended when we left the last universe. One dream i was at school and it was burning down and while it burns my brothers house that I lived in was burning too I think. So when I got home I decided to run away for whatever reason since I could live in my parents house but after I was tired I saw a shady neighborhood and went to it (it was in a circle with one road that lead to it and another neirborhood). After trying to talk to people I knew they didn't like me so I went away and somehow ended up in a military-like-place and I met the people who were going to my school that somehow got repaired fast and I met this boy in a group who was my grade and told him the school could burn down easily and said to be careful and he trusted me for some reason and I watched as he went out of the military place then the dream ended. One dream there was a zombie apocalypse in my school, one dream I died being shot in the back my a crossbow, one dream I turned into a zombie, one dream my family turned into black shadows that were scary, one dream my old art teacher got bitten by a zombie and she bit my left leg near the knee, one dream I was kidnapped by a crazy man who took people eyes and organs into a jar and their was a group of people including me who escaped. One dream there was a place we had to go to or else we would be killed in random ways but when we would go to the place we could still die from the lady that ate us or stabbed us or clawed us to death, I lived but nearly died. One dream i died and became ghost who could communicate with my family. And I can't remember anymore dreams right now. Edit:I guess my dreams represent that I'm lonely or something and that I'm scared to die and to be forgotten.
Bluesky Painting literally the day I heard this song (Sunday morning) I started over the garden wall shortly after. Finished it that night. Best accomplishment of my life.

this reminds me of walking in a forest after a storm, and some animals walk by you as you light up the path through the forest, the animals follow you and your light as you stroll silently.
Ok so I have a theory, this is like something from the future, why do you have a feeling almost like your forgetting something? Easy the world has ended and has recreated bring us back, us not even realizing it happened this song almost brings back what happened. Theory two...giving us a vibe non of us can discribe when we listen to this why you ask because this is something from the future, giving us a hint of what’s going to happen the feeling of familiar is because it already happened and we don’t know it. Some apocalyptic thing happened wiping out most of man kind the ones who survived telling the “legends” from long ago. This probably didn’t make sense to you but it made sense to me.
Ah yes, I am truly an intellectual. I always ask myself: If a "catgirl" is a human with cat ears and tail, then would a "girlcat" be a cat with human ears and no tail? Some catgirls have cat paws too so maybe they would also have human hands?

Cosmo's songs just have this touch to them. They are wholesome, and when you hear it, you just immediately know it is his song. His songs tell entire stories and yet it doesn't sound crammed or rushed. When listening to most of his songs, it is as if I can hear his opinions on life. I know it sounds wierd, but when a song tells me that much about a person, I immediately love it.
when i listen to this i imagine a mossy forest, damp with rain, soft light splattered on the groud in a patchy pattern because the tall tree leafs block out most of it, its magical but not really just feels that way- two boys find a small wood cabin inside is a small old man who reads the boys fairytales.
You dont know how fucking relieved i am to know this songs name again. Been thinking of it for 3 hours now, knowing no lyrics nor beats or title , trying to find this just for the nostalgia. Here i am, finally… finally.
amazing song, but honestly my attention was captured initially by the reference to my favourite picture book as a child - I carried my copy of the Quangle Wangle's Hat everywhere I went.
Has anyone mentioned Over the Garden Wall? There's a woodcutter with his daughter's soul in a lantern, a woman giving her life energy to her father, an old-fashioned schoolhouse taught by a human but the kids are animal-people, and there's a wendigo monster who captures kids and deprives them of energy then turns them into trees!!! That's where I found this song!! (Go watch it it's really good)
I.... I think I kinda understand the song... It's like because children are growing up to be taught to be all facts and such, they don't have the joy of listening to nursery rhymes anymore, thus the child in them just dies... 😐 Okai, that might just be me...
Waffle Princess its not just you. I'm 10 yet, I feel so young listening to this song. How none of the words make sense yet...Cosmo Sheldrake formed them into this beautiful song.
Waffle Princess I know this is an old comment but my perspective on it is how your imagination could make a story or a legend as such a very enjoyable one! By shedding only a minor few of your childish scales can you learn to be more wise but still know how to have a bit of fun! The sorties are that of the wise and childish. They have meanings behind them. The rabbit in the moon is almost like a reminder that there's someone watching over us even if the world around you seems to crumble when a small comment as light as a feather touches the ground. The cow that hopped the planets represents the journeys we go through and every hurdle we have to pass before we can be known well for it. As minuscule and insignificant as the symbolisms my seem, they really could teach you something if you may close enough attention to the words. People in this world are cruel snakes with iron-hard scales and they only way you can get them to shed is by burning the anger till it melts away from the soul and the only way to make the words' bite hurt less is to drain the venom from their painful fangs; that way your heart won't get punctured as easily.

I just imagine somebody singing this song to a group of children, as they sit in awe as he tells these 'stories' to them. A young-ish man, singing this, no music, just a storybook. 30 minutes pass by, full of laughs and tears, until he closes the storybook, ending the song. He walks away, but a page falls out of the book. One of the kids reads the page out loud. "Listen here, one and all And I can tell you a tale of how thee could fall How a boy became a god in 3 week's time And where you go to when you die These many tales are waiting to be told So please sit down and watch the pages unfold" The children stare at the page, curious. And a few of them decide to follow where the man went off to. And they find his body. Cold, drenched in blood. Impaled on a spike, his arms torn off and covered in words. "Useless. Worthless." "No-good. Shameful." " *Father.* " His storybook was left, touched only by a few drops of crimson staining the cover.
all this morning I've had the line "legend has it that moss grows on the north side of the tree" running through my head. Occasionally swapped for "legend has it that the moss grows on the dark side of the moon."
laniebug 15 They're nursery rhymes. Like the line "the cow who hopped the planets while strattling the spoon" is a reference to the cow who jumped over the moon I believe. And what can't you stop listening? Because it's an amazing song. ❤
Interesting to note-at first glance, it seems like all the “legends” he mentions are real facts. But if you look more closely, they’re not technically correct. Moss doesn’t always grow on the north side of trees, worms can breathe underground during rain and dont need to come up to breathe, plants don’t eat sun with their leaves (if you want to get particular, they use the energy to fuel production of food, which they then consume in a completely different process), and the earth’s axial tilt is 23.5° and it doesn’t really “spin around on” that axis (it’s not incorrect, just a mischaracterization). Minor details. Not saying it means anything, just find it interesting.
On one hand, it could the fact that the song follows themes of learning. So, it makes sense that the person retelling these stories with fantastical themes would start off learning facts with sparse details, while being well-versed in fantasy related stories. On the other hand, it could literally just be that it would make the song really dragged out if he included a lot more details within each individual fact. After all, "the earth spinning around on an axis of 23.5 degrees, with minor fluctuations depending on conditions" is a lot less catchy than "the earth spinning around on an axis of 23 degrees".
A lot of people think the story is actually told from the perspective of a kid who is mixing fantasies and bedtime stories with real life fact he may have learned from adults or at school or something, but that's the general gist of it
I used to listen to this song when I was 15 and I loved it, but I totally forgot about it. Now at 21 I’ve heard some of his songs on TikTok, and I knew his voice and style sounded familiar. So thank you to tiktok for reminding me of this wonderful song and artist lmao
EpicDogeTime tale the time to dissect the words slowly if you don't understand. Abandon all childish ways for just a few moments and look for an understanding. The song itself states that you can learn from old fairytales and legends. Take your time to look into the words that they say and try to find a meaning. I know I have and it becomes quite simple after a while. Maybe after you finish you'll become wiser :)
When I listen to this song all of my childhood flashes before my eyes reminding me of the suffering and the really bad experience i had as a child, but everyday as a child i would always tell myself "Its alright, things only get better" So many things happened that eventually as 10 year old i found out that life really isn't as great as people think it is. It has so much suffering and hate. People think just because there is love that it outmatches it. But for me love did not exist as much. Suprisingly i would always want to go to school, my parents always thought it was because i liked learning but it was just so i can have an escape. In school i had people who cared for me and loved me for who i was; and for a time i was happy until i was forced to leave due to financial issues. Now it is just all day suffering waiting for the day that ends my own stream across life seeing of it was really worth it to stay living. I may have only started High school but where my life is going i wont make it anymore. I just replay all the moments that made me who i am. A person who cant even show his true emotions to anyone knowing that he will probably abandon them and then have regret for the next few years
