Allocating central expenses down to lower levels, e.g. stores, products or customers, is a common requirement when we want to assess the profitability of different parts of our business. Indeed, Activity Based Costing (ABC) is a widely used method to perform such an analysis allocating costs using different cost drivers depending on the nature of the expense.
The power of the DAX language and Power BI's calculation engine make it a good tool for these calculations though the DAX code can be fiddly to write.
In this video we will work through an example, writing a DAX measure to allocate costs down to individual stores using a sales driver.
