Today we look at the cost difference between a stone driveway and concrete driveway. I also use the BX23S to spread some limestone.

I'm almost certain he will, he's just not ready yet! In his calculations though, he didn't add cost of heating, so maybe you can give him that added cost. 👍👌❤

Happy Anniversary! Great to see Eva has recovered and is getting out to the gym again. While I agree that gravel is much less expensive, I’m not sure you did an apples to apples comparison. The $11 for concrete has a lot more calculated into it that your number for the stone. You really need to include the cost of all the equipment required to get the stone and spreading it along with your labor. I realize it’s a sunk cost for you and you work cheap, but gravel is more that just the cost of the stone. Love the channel. Have A Day!

Hey Mike, I'm sure it is still cheaper to stone it. But! You need to add in some of the trailer cost because you use it to pick it up Some Kubota cost and your time because you use those to spread the stone. I didn't mention the truck and the insurance for all the equipment because your a smart guy and I know that you would know it put that into the cost as well. My point is, it's a little misleading when you only mention the cost of the stone. If you didn't have all of the equipment and didn't know how to use it, you would have mentioned the cost of delivery and labor/machinery to spread the stone. I'm with you on the cost factor, just thought you should include "all of the cost" not just the stone. On another note, I love watching your channel, the content is great. I'm glad that Eva is doing so much better, it is definitely an answer to all of the prayers. Have a great week and I'm waiting on an xl sweat shirt so that I can get my ODWTM gear.

Mike, I am amazed at how well you can drop stone and sprinkle it the way you do. I have attempted this several times with the over 50+ ton of stone I put in last year with my 1025r and just couldn't master it. It just tends to dump in piles. I will be working on perfecting my technique this year but I can only hope to get close to the way you can put stone down. Things are looking great there and I enjoy watching the videos daily. Great content, instruction, and I am gaining a wealth of knowledge and insight into the reason behind the way you do things. Happy and excited to see the success you are enjoying through your perseverance and determination. There's a lot to be gleaned from all of these videos and your mentorship to the community.

Happy Anniversary you two! I think paving with asphalt would be the best option as it is much cheaper than concrete. In CT there arent many concrete driveways. Pretty much all asphalt which we like and are very durable!

Happy Anniversary, 31 years, awesome! I'm sorry, I'm one of those commenters spouting concrete. If anyone is fully aware that you know your stuff it's me. Oh yes, dollar wise, perfect sense, fun spreading stone, you lucky dude! It was your neighbor that day when you drove by and said, "you know you've got it made when you have a heated drive." Well, with ya'lls motto, "the finer things in life," a heated cement drive and parking lot and aggregate walkway from house to gameroom, certainly is the finer things in life. I do hope you didn't get offended. I do hope that one day, whenever, you will have all the finer things in life. Your channel sure adds to the quality of mine! So very sweet to see Eva 'back at it.' Thank you Lord! Eva and Melissa sure had great hair today and awesome smiles, geese, so nice! I really enjoy watching you spread stone! I remember now, you've talked about making that road before, at least in 2 videos. Concrete IS very expensive! Everything is, we here in Hickory NC are paying $3.39 a gallon for gas. I saw the dancing clip on Instagram, good stuff! It's supposed to reach 68° tomorrow w rain. Now get that stone spread and stay out of the mud! Thanks Mike and Melissa for the sweet video today!👍🚜❤

It's really great seeing Eva doing so good. I looked into doing concrete but then went with asphalt. After years of doing stone the asphalt was a good choice for me. Yep stone is cheaper but I'm getting older and was tired of working with stone every year. I know you love stone. Me...not so much. Also you make spreading stone look easy. Folks it's not that easy. Mike definitely knows what he is doing and is a great operator. Thanks for sharing.

Happy Anniversary Mike and Melissa! One thing to consider in the concrete vs stone equation is if open concrete is taxed as part of your property tax bill every year. When our first appraiser came out from the county he ask about future plans and I said after the shop the house would be next then concreting the circle drive, he said it would be taxed, so I said asphalt then and was told they were thinking about taxing that too. So stone it was and always will be.

Happy Anniversary !!! A thought on the driveway….. We have a mile long dirt road up here in Maine and had fought mud sections for years until my buddy told me about bituminous asphalt. It’s more expensive than stone, but less than concrete. We chose to do sections at a time over a few years, but now it looks and acts just as if it had been paved. I’m not sure the cost of it in your area, but just my two cents. Which I’m sure if you had the two cents from everyone’s ideas offered to you you’d be able to afford to gold plate the driveway. Hahahahahaha Keep the great videos coming ! Thanks!
@ricksoper6836

In your calculation I believe you should add fuel cost for picking up the stone and cost of tractor time for applying the stone. One could argue the depreciation cost of your cost of truck and trailer. How many times would this be done over a 10 year period. Plus your time has to cost something doing this. I understand your position though.

BTW I hope that Melissa is getting a medal for putting up with Mike all these years. From my own experience save your money and stay with the stone drive. WHY? Concrete in almost any large pad has two things. 1) its very hard and 2) it cracks, shifts and moves. Yes afraid it does as my large concrete drive is having issues at the expansion joints where one pad is rising and the next is sinking.

Mike, no point in having concrete when the family is gone. Sell one of your jeeps, mini digger, a saw or two. A lot of your time is taken up with your stone driveways. Put the For Sale sign up at the bottom of your driveway. You will need lots of money for medical care when you no longer can perform your duties. I have to go now because I have a plane to catch to Spain. Mike, don't forget to put up the For Sale Sign 😎🍾🎉

Mike, I know Tom would not agree, but have you looked into to asphalt? We did our whole driveway back in the early 90’s and it served us well for over 20 years. We have since been replacing it with concrete a section at a time usually yearly. Our driveway is probably 2/3rds what yours is. Plus in our climate in southern Minnesota the snow melts off great when the sun comes out. Have a day!

The best thing about your approach is that water can soak through the aggregate. Concreting over every surface causes water to run off quickly. This creates aggressive erosion and adds to the flooding risk. Slowing down water egress helps reduce erosion and enables aquifers to be restocked. I note that fresh limestone is your favoured choice of aggregate. Is crushed recycled concrete aggregate used much in your area and how does it compare in price? When your tracked skid steer arrives, will you be getting power rake? I would think that a Harleyrake would allow you to refresh and reprofile these surfaces and reduce the need for new aggregate.

Great discussion, Mike. One thing I'd like to point out in comparing the costs of concrete vs stone is that you're not valuing your own time. When compared to paying out for labor for concrete, you're also including the labor for that. What's YOUR time worth? $100 per hour? $150? Even with that, I'd assume that the real cost, which includes your picking up the stone, travel mileage and gas, plus the installation would be approximately 2x's the cost of the material, essentially tripling what you paid. That would be apples to apples. Even so, stone is still probably more cost efficient than concrete. Even assuming a constant cost of stone and that it doesn't rise in price. And I would assume that there would be fluctuations in price over the years in stone. And with concrete, could you consider it as "one and done"? Even with concrete, there's probably some maintenance. But how do you figure that? My vote would be to stick with stone.

Yes, but you aren't taking into consideration that you end up having to re-stone that area every winter/spring to keep from having mud there. So in the long run, concrete will pay for itself in how much you WON'T be spending on stones. Happy Anniversary!! We will be celebrating our 46th anniversary the end of May. Hi Mike!! You're talking about the concrete in square feet, but here in my area, we go by cubic yards.... I'm thinking for your driveway with the equipment that you'd be taking over the concrete, you would want 8" slab at a MINIMUM... so that would figure out to about 130 cubic yards of concrete... In my area, concrete is going for probably $120 a cubic yard... which comes up to $15600... and that's just for the concrete. Doesn't include rebar, all the labor to set the rebar, finishing, etc. I dont' even want to guess at the cost of that... but I know that the concrete itself is the cheap part. That money will buy a LOT of rock. And, if you change your mind about the layout of things in a few years, you can tear everything out with the equipment you already have. I know, as you do, the rock is the right way to go.

Mike, don,t forget you will need to place at lease 4 " of stone down BELOW the new concrete. Lots of grading, soil preparation and compaction. If you are to run log trucks across the new concrete slab, you will need more than 4" and 6" section, [stone and concrete]. Additionally you will need a great deal more re-bar [reinforcing]. Ask me how I know!

The concrete/asphalt vs. gravel argument is usually based on cost of one time installation and years of longevity ( including patches and other repairs ) of the former, in comparison to the yearly addition of fresh gravel. Not to mention, ease of snow management, and being able to salt hard top in winter. I'm only halfway through the video, so we'll see if that's addressed or not.

Mike,I think you left a few cost factors out in the comparison. The cost of the trailer and truck to pickup the stone. The cost of the tractor and other equipment to scoop and spread the stone. Your time 2-3 loads of stone a year spread with the above equipment, most folks don’t have. It’s kind’a like your statement when driving by the heated driveway….yep, that guy has really made it. Well,he probably looks at your place and see’s the pole building, all your equipment 🚜💰💰💰 And thinks, yep that guy has really made it. It’s all in the eye of the beholder! MIKE, great time to put down that stone now that it's thawing out a little ! It'll definitely pack in.

Keep your gravel driveway! If you have a good base limestone should last 8 to 10 years. I put 67 Blue rock limestone on my 400 ft driveway six years ago and still hasn't moved! High traffic plays a big part too! Asphalt is high maintenance since you have to coat it every other year! Twenty two and a half tons on a tri-axle is an overload in Ohio! Lol! Trust me I know all to well! Happy Anniversary to you and Melissa and glad Eva is doing well!!

Mike, your writing pen behind your ear made me think "handy as a pocket on a shirt". Happy wedding anniversary.

Great comparison & very reasonable conclusion. I thought the 2B was Melissa’s Valentines gift to you 😆. I am eagerly awaiting the pool (?) coming this spring. Not much chatter about it lately but Melissa (& Hunter) will love it after all the hot & sweaty hours in the shirt sweatshop 😉. Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
