This video is about the cost of living in Brazil in 2024. I live in the south of Brazil with my wife and daughter and in this video I will share with you our monthly living expenses to give you a feel for how much it costs to live in Brazil. Obviously the cost of living will depend on a number of factors and this video is just an example.
About me: I am Swedish and I moved to Brazil over 5 years ago and on my channel I share my experiences of living in the South of Brazil.

Almost half of your expenses go to food, which is a lot. We're a family of 6 and we spend around R$2500 on food in São Paulo.

Feeding a family of 6 on R$2500 in Sao Paulo is very good. I definitely agree that it is possible to spend less on food

During the summer months here in Blumenau can reach up to 48 degrees c! My energy bill is easily around 1000 reais per month probably due to the air con basically being on 24/7 and that's just me and my wife living in a house
@nordicinvestor

Very true that in the summer air conditioning increases the electricity bill a lot!

Yes, installing a separate circuit from solar panels to your air conditioner would be a great investment. How high is the tarrif for solar panels and an inverter? Are you able to avoid permitting if this circuit is not connected to your main electrical panel that receives electricity from the electrical utility
@StoneyVintson
@StoneyVintson Месяц назад
Are you able to install a radiant film barrier beneath your roof? It blocks infrared radiation that heats this space. Also a solar powered fan to ventilate an attic. You can also install retractable shades that block infrared radiation during the day during summer. People need infrared radiation for their mitochondria, etc, but you can go for a walk and receive this benefit

3900 per month in supermarket for 3 people is way too much the average. I would say 1500 a family of 3 would be eating well.

Thank you for being so transparent! It helps with my indecision to make the change.. especially with the flooding that has taken place. My wife is seriously looking in Jaraguá, I’m just afraid because of the history of landslides and flooding… I know that you are not worried and I would like to feel a peace of mind also.
@nordicinvestor
@nordicinvestor Месяц назад
You definitely need to be very careful about where you buy a property as floods are getting more frequent in the south of Brazil. The key is to buy somewhere away from the river and elevated but not on a steep slope as this could have a risk of landslides.

Brazilian here.. I live in the USA. I want to retire in Brazil because the cost of living is lower than the USA. According to my research, a couple needs 2/3 thousand dollars to have a comfortable life in Brazil. In my case, this amount does not include rent because I already have an apartment. It all depends on the lifestyle, I know many couples who live very well in Brazil with 2 thousand dollars paying rent. This is all very relative. Good video!!

Awsome to see the actual cost. As a Swede i've got a job offer that is work for 6 months in Sweden and free for 6 months and im looking at making either Brazil or SE Asia my 2nd home for when im free. About the humidity, would u say it's much worse in the South compared to the North for instance or West/East or not a big difference?
@nordicinvestor
@nordicinvestor День назад
Hi, the humidity is worse in the south of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina) and also in the West (Amazonia). In the central, eastern and northern areas of Brazil it is less humid. But then you have to consider other factors like crime, poverty, strength of economy etc and generally the south and south east are better with regards to these factors.

Thank you so much for this video. I am planning to move to Brazil in a few years and I am always watching for this information. One thing I am quite confused on is importing things (household goods, cars, a boat, etc) I have been told that it is better just to buy everything there, and also that you cannot really bring a car or boat there? I have been told that there might be some sort of an agreement with Uruguay to allow the boat? but I am not sure... fingers crossed for a video about imports information hahahaha.
@nordicinvestor

Hi, when I moved to Brazil, I filled part of a container with our things but it was mainly clothes, toys, decorations, bicycles, kitchen stuff, a few electronics. It cost me $2000-$3000. We did not bring over furniture, appliances, car etc as it did not make financial sense as the shipping would cost a lot more and also if appliances break down in the future there is a high risk that you cannot get the spare parts in Brazil.

Are you able to find bilingual schools in medium size cities such as Joinville or Floripa SC? In the US there are few choices and they can be expensive. If you have a public option in the US, you need to sign up when your child is 4 years old. Otherwise it is very difficult to be excepted if you do not speak those languages at home.

if you were a brazilian earning regular wages would this budget be considered as cheap? what are the average salaries for nonexpats earning R$?
@nordicinvestor
@nordicinvestor Месяц назад
Salaries in Brazil are significantly lower than Europe or the US. I did a video about this recently. An average salary in the south of Brazil is around R$3000 ($600) a month so this budget would not be considered cheap (this salary is an average and many brazilians earn much more). But for someone who has lived in Europe most of my life, my cost of living expenses are much lower in Brazil than Europe.

Here in West Virginia, things cost around the same (no more than 50% more), except health insurance is around 10x the price (often more than the cost of food). I guess you pay a lot less in taxes in WV since there is no public healthcare (In my situation, I would pay less than half in taxes). It's strange to think that I wouldn't really save money if I lived in Brazil.

For now the Brazil $R is approx 1/4 to the $USD. All else being more or less equal (electricity costs are typically much higher in Brazil) it’s not difficult to appreciate the lower cost of living there. I watched your 5 reasons to live in Brazil video and must contest your claim of 40 degrees in the summer. Temps are often up to 45/48 with very high humidity. People in Brazil hate this. Whether or not Brazil see more extreme temperatures remains to be seen but this one truth is enough to say not this no thanks for me.
