Igor! This is funny to watch as a Canadian that shops there all the time. Dont forget to tell your friends about PRICE MATCHING. It’s when you show the cashier that the product is cheaper somewhere else, they give you that price- good way to save money! I use the app FLIPP to look for sales from other stores ✌️😌

Canada has some of the most expensive grocery prices in the world. There's a damn good reason that so many Canadian children are going hungry in such a rich country. FYI for you new Canadians; the government here is owned by large Agribusiness corporations and profit margins are put way ahead of giving a shit about the food security or hunger of our children...Welcome to Canada!

Canada is metric. The only reason why produce and bulk foods are measured in pounds is because $1/pound looks cheaper than $2.30/kilogram. All of the packaged goods are measured in grams, kilograms, litres, and mililitres.

@BlueOrangey1
@BlueOrangey1 5 лет назад
Haha yeah right, Canada uses pounds and feet because we are so dam influenced by the US. Officially we use metric but because of how dependent / influenced by the states we are we always still use pounds, feet, and sometimes even miles.
@sadee1287
@sadee1287 4 года назад
@@BlueOrangey1 No...we use both because metric never really took off as well as the gov't wanted it to. I was in grade 6 in '78 when it was brought in, and having to switch over was tough. I still consider myself a 'hybrid' measurement system user, because I'm metric in temperature and speed, but imperial for everything else.

The cost of groceries in the US really depends where in the US you shop. E.g., food prices in Alaska are much more expensive due to the added transportation costs.

it is -35*C outside and the 50'000 square foot ware house is heated to +23*C... the running cost for those buildings is ridiculous, the owners don't make much of anything by owning stores.

plus the lights used to be 1000 watt metal-halide bulbs. They are probably retrofitted to LED now but even still being on 24 hours a day 365 days a year has to add up. I don't see how a store like this could turn a profit in somewhere like Ontario. Luckily we have super cheap natural gas here in Alberta because if the gas was more groceries would cost more. It's always passed on to the consumer the store isn't going to eat the extra expense. No pun intended :P
@esthermiller2713

I think most Canadian stores sell items in grams. But there are always weighing scales hanging near the produce.....which show the weight both in grams AND in pounds. Some of us absolutely refused to go metric decades ago, so we still think in lbs & ounces. So we appreciate the easy option of translating for those of us who never wanted to learn metric measures.

The Superstore is way too expensive. We shop at Mr. Meats, Joseph's Produce, No Frills, Food Basics, and Freshco. We buy our bananas for 56 cents a pound. We can get strawberries for $1.50 /lb, raspberries for $1.44 half pint, same with blackberries, blueberries. I just bought 15 pounds of potatoes for $1.99, 5 lb carrots for the same. Although, what is laughable is the lettuce at $4.00 t o $6.00 for a head of iceburg lettuce. We can usually buy it for a $1.99 if we have to. I agree that stuff is crazy pricey and a rip off. For cold cuts we always buy when there is a sale at Mr. Meats which we can buy it for half the price. We grow our own indoor herbs, leaf lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and other things in our sun room, plus we grow all sort of things outside in the spring and summer like peppers, tomatoes of all kinds, cucumbers, broccoli, raspberries, strawberries, herbs and spices. This year we will be adding sweet potatoes and baking potatoes into the mix.

Cheese and poultry are very expensive in Canada because there are very high duties on dairy and poultry imports and there are production quotas within Canada to keep prices high. This hurts everyone in Canada except for the insiders who are allowed to produce dairy and poultry in Canada.

We’re aware that if we’re wanting high quality in something like an electric appliance, as an example, the higher the price, the better the quality. But there are many people here in Canada whose income is so low that they simply can’t afford good quality. So those who are that limited with low income are given the option of something affordable for them......which will last for a little while......hopefully.

It's still expensive but that $29.99 was for the grinder haha. The salt inside is basically free and is just for looks. Just salt itself is one of the cheapest things you can buy here. Even pink Himalayan rock salt isn't too much if you get it from Winners or I think even Dollerama has it now. One thing I find annoying living here and buying groceries is the units of measurement. Some places will have Pounds some places Kilograms and other places like Safeway will have both units and it just depends what you're buying. They might have the sale price listed in one and then the regular price listed in another. Without a bunch of math you can't even see if you're actually saving much money! Which is frustrating because sometimes they will put something on sale but it's only a couple cents off but because people see a brightly colored tag they think it's a good deal.

It’s strangely comforting that the prices in Calgary, where you are is basically the same price as Toronto. In Toronto you don’t need a car. I walk to the local grocery twice a week. I spend about 40-60$ each trip for 1 person. There are numerous fruit stores and ethnic food stores within 5 blocks either direction. It’s a very multicultural city.

The Canada dollar is also worth less than the US dollar... just look at the barcode on a book, if a book is $10 in America, it’s around $15 in Canada. It also depends on where you live in the US, the whole states of Alaska and Hawaii are highly expensive because they’re away from the mainland, but the mainland is expensive too. Cities like NYC, LA, Seattle.... they’re just as expensive.

Pallab Biswas that is not easy as that would depend how you file your taxes and there are a lot of loopholes where you can get money back for example if you donate to a legitimate charity that is registered with the government you can get 30% to 70 back. The general term is this you will pay 40% tax if you are single if you are married you pay 30% now if you make less than 60k you will get most of that money back in tax returns not all obviously but you will have tax returns. Also if you have kids and don’t make a lot of money you get money from the government it is called child tax.

wow look at all that fruit and vegetables, and then all the snow outside. Amazing. I would expect prices to be high. The shipping and storing of produce in that climate would be an interesting episode in itself. Can you order things online (amazon) and get it delivered and save $ and gas? Since the prices are so high are the cheapper foods at least decent quality, preservatives, GMOs, dyes etc..?

Superstore has a sister store called No Frills. It is similar but they do not have as much choices. They only carry the primary products and brands. Superstore Warehouse is a third store that does bulk packages/deals. Superstore in Sunridge has live fish/lobster. Yeah so in No Frills it looks the same from the outside as Superstore but it only has food items, no chairs, microwaves, bbq accessories, etc. If you want a bakery inside of the grocery store than Safeway has that....maybe Sobeys does? Sobeys and Safeway are American. Anyway I like Costco myself and No Frills too.

I was elected official of 18yrs and my kids found me funny when I told them I'd like to experience working there. Any kind of work. I'm waiting for my time going to airport to visit Japan when I saw you here. I'm 56 yrs old. Really I love to experience working not as legislator anymore. I'm Rose Lachica Marzan Marcella in facebook. Good job. People are getting info about life in Canada
