What about mooring? A place to dock a boat is usually a major cost factor
@Inspiration2022
@Inspiration2022 8 месяцев назад
Yes, but also they're quite rare alongside the canals and rivers as a permanent mooring. And the canal and river trust seem to be cutting them back even more. They saying they need to raise funds. Why don't they make more moorings available?

I pay £1300 for licencing and about £250 for insurance . Diesel, I pay between £1 and £1.45 per litre for red diesel. Thank heavens there are not many monsters like this one, as they are really too big . £47K is just half the cost of fitting out, that is why a professionally fitted out boat costs twice as much. I use 2 Calor gas bottles per annum.

@@ladygardener100 You know if you buy your red diesel directly from a supplier like I do, I pay 74p per liter And if you run your heating on red diesel, you may consider running it on kerosene which is currently about 34 pence per liter. It seems you've got a bit of an issue about bigger boats? It's quite a shame considering we all chose to live a life for very similar reasons as each other I'm sure. I've now lived in a narrow boat and a wide beam and I've always tried to be kind to both. I'm struggling to understand why narrow boaters are so ant i wide beams. Can you share why you feel you need to be so negative towards them?

I could not possibly bear to live on a narrow boat - I would feel so claustrophobic! It is a shame some people are so judgemental about widebeam boats and the way others choose to live. We are all trying to survive financially and live our best lives. Well done to you for all the hard work you've put in to make a lovely, comfortable home and well done to you for all the money you've saved doing the work yourself.

What about haul out and hull painting and other boat maintenance/repairs? Also boat value depreciation?

I was thinking that, however, boats are holding or in some cases going up in value, and have been since man flu 19.

The boat was brought for 47,000 and as definitely gone up in value I would guess it's worth anything between 100,000 and 140,000. Maintenance, I haven't calculated in to my yearly costs as I've been building the boat. Taking the boat out and blacking the hull will cost me around 1,000 and I will be tackling that next year as it will be 3 years old. As a continuous cruiser, it's usually between 3 and 4 years. You have to do this. I would imagine if you have brought a boat brand new finished you wouldn't expect to do any maintenance part from engine maintenance within the first three years. I did my own engine maintenance which cost around £300 for all oil filters, oil, fuel filters and belts. Very easy to do and it only took me about an hour. Usually with all of my boats I do this just before the winter to reassure myself that I won't have any breakdowns through the winter.

That’s not that bad to be honest. Do u have RCR ? Do u find the widebeam restrictive on cruising around at all. ? Best wishes

No, I've not signed up to the river and canal rescue. And yes, if I was to continuously cruise the entire network it would be incredibly restrictive. However, the areas that I want to be based in up to now I have had plenty of places to go. Beginning of this summer coming I plan to go further afield, so I'm sure I'm going to find it a lot more restrictive than.

I’m from Canada so I have nothing to compare. Is it cheaper to live on land or water?
@Inspiration2022
@Inspiration2022 8 месяцев назад
A lot cheaper to live on the water if it's done in the right way. As you can see from the video that's the entire cost. It cost me for an entire year. If you were to live in a house, you'd be lucky if it only cost that much for 2 months.
@markjones1337
@markjones1337 8 месяцев назад
It is cheaper than in a house, but it depends on what sort of house/area you want to live in. I live in Northwest of UK (this guy is in the Midlands) for me, and only because I had a landlady who never put the rent up, I was paying 750 a month (all in, rent, gas, elec, coucil tax), now on a boat its 400 (all in, I burn free wood heat) a month.....(excluding blacking ever 2 years). For most people it will be a bigger cost saving than what I have, but I was living very cheaply compared to most people prior to the boat.

@@markjones1337 It works out being about £263 a month to live on my boat. That's all bills everything. But £750 all in for living on land is an incredibly cheap rate these days. I don't honestly know how people can afford to live in properties. The amount of bills they have, council tax water rates, electric and gas bills Insurance, TV license landline internet costs. Did your landlord cover all of that? I honestly don't know a cheaper way of living than living on a boat. I'm curious how much it costs people to live in their vans as I've seen a lot of that going on around at the moment.
