After traveling north to a tiny home festival in Fort Collins, our road trip brings us to downtown Denver, Colorado. In this video we talk money and the cost of travel. The HUGE monthly expense savings from joining van life is one of the most appealing aspects to downsizing and living a life on the road. We break down the monthly costs of our mobile tiny home and compare them to the cost of living in a city.

Hey all, appreciating all the comments. We should've explained these monthly expenses are combined for the both of us. Hope that makes more sense...
@DePvdM
@DePvdM 7 лет назад
Even 900 dollar a month for food seems quite expensive to me. I can do with 70 dollar per week easily on my own. I do think your comparison is a bit off, as you do not seem to consider the write off of the car per week, you also seem quite low on the insurance part (have you taken into account health insurance, occupants insurance of the car or is this purely the most basic car insurance you have) Also i am wondering why you think the internet suddenly is free on the road. It seems you have put that as part of your food budget now. Internet on the road usually is twice or more expensive when traveling. Also campgrounds and such you haven't yet taken into account.
@NomadicMovement
@NomadicMovement 7 лет назад
We don't have mobile internet! We just use Wi-Fi when we have it. We havent paid for a single campsite yet, only the free ones - which are much better. For food, while we are being somewhat frugal, we arent trying to save every $ possible. We like eating good!

get bigger screws and reseal the panel where its at, put a wind deflector in front of it. the wind driving down the road is getting under it and pulling it loose.

& use liquid nail as a lock tight.
@DePvdM
@DePvdM 7 лет назад
A wind deflector might indeed work well, but as a mechanical engineer i would highly recommend using bison lock bond or similar to keep your screws from being loosened up from driving vibrations (there are thousands of small and larger vibrations influencing the screws, for those to stay put, this special adhesive really locks them into place. You will need quite some more force once it sets to remove the screws, even tough that still can be hand loosened after application of lock bond, but it will require quite some strength. Also screws should be covered in sealant afterwards on the top of your vehicle. But it needs to be a high quality sealant, as it has to deal with cold, heat, large amount of UV radiation, lots of vibration and lots of water, dirt and so on. Cleaning the area where the sealant will be put on with acetone or cleaning acid (and let that evaporate first before applying the sealing) really means it sticks on better. Better clean it twice and know it is very clean then to have a dirty surface making the sealing not stick at all. Also check the sealant and all other rooftop items at least every two months to see how it holds. Furthermore i would apply dampeners (small rubber rings for instance) under the places where the solar panels are bolted down. The panels are not intended for high vibration places and need to get some help to reduce vibration as much as possible to keep them from cracking/ breaking/ falling apart. You might want to reconsider moving your panels to the back. Having the weight distribution in the van between the wheels is much better, certainly at a high point in the van. Best of luck.
@ChucksMagic
@ChucksMagic 7 лет назад
All good ideas that would help the problem, but after thinking about the situation, Ive decided that what I'm going to do with my installation is to reinforce the areas where the brackets mount with a patch of sheet metal welded in place and then weld the brackets to this patch. Prime , paint and this should eliminate the chance of a leak. Since this is on the roof aesthetics are not as important. DePvdM, I will be using your suggestion of vibration isolation between the bracket and solar panel. Good luck guys, hope you get it fixed. It would really suck to have a solar panel become a wing and take off at 60 mph.

Lots of ideas on the roof leak issue. I'm an RV tech, and I've done several solar installs on campers and vans and my RV three years ago, and traveled all across the USA. I recommend you clean your roof first with alcohol, then use butyl tape between the brackets and the roof, and then seal all around the brackets and up over (covering) the screws with Dicor self-leveling sealant. This is a true and tested method of sealing your brackets and you will stop your roof leak problems...Oh yea, I didn't notice your nose at all...the shot was not that close..cheers.

QUESTION! The other part of this equation that people with this lifestyle do not seem to address is... WHAT ARE YOU SAVING? It's one thing to have less expenses, but if you're not earning the amount that you no longer need to spend... isn't it a wash? Of course you can argue that you get to play all day... and there is value in this so perhaps you feel there will be time enough to work later... But at some point, don't you have to start earning beyond just “getting by” so that you have some money for when you can't do this anymore? I would love a response for my own edification because may be I'm missing something. Great videos. I'll keep watching as long as you're willing to post. Thanks.

I'm not too sure how you screwed the solar panel mounting brackets to the roof, but I don't think you need to do everything that you're planning to do. Plus, if your roof leaks again because of a bad install, now your bed will get wet, plus your battery, inverter, etc. Order some "Dicor 501LSW-1 Lap Sealant - 10.3 oz." from Amazon, or find it at your local RV store like Nolans RV in Denver. You'll want to layer it like: Cleaned RV roof surface> Dicor sealant> bracket> Dicor sealant> mounting screw> Dicor sealant. Clean surfaces with acetone. Use about a grape sized amount or more. I think that makes sense. If you want, I could make a quick video to share my power setup of my enclosed utility trailer I built for when we go riding/camping out here in CA. Love your videos! I plan to do what you're doing when I retire.

I did a video about converting to lithium iron phosphate batteries. So far, they are great, the biggest factor though, is you can use 80% of their capacity without hurting them, versus 50% of a standard lead acid battery. In short, you can get almost twice as much electricity out of lithium iron phosphate batteries and they last longer and charge must faster. Long story short, next time you need batteries, you might switch types. If you're already using them, well you're all set, LOL! Thanks for the videos!

Use dicor caulking which is used on RV's to seal a leak or seal over screws that are put in the roof to mount something.
@lisawithyoutube.comlivingc3817
I hope you get that leak fixed quickly. When we had both our homes up for sale to get ready to go fulltime in our RV. We rented a house that had water pipe issues. The land lord was so horrible. We kept getting really sick and realized it was from mold growing in the ceiling between the bottom floor and top floor of our home. We even moved into the RV earlier than planned because of the mold. So we were paying for RV park and the rent on the rental house till the lease was up. I also wanted to say y'all spend a lot on food for two people. We spend 1200.00 for 5 people two adults and three kids. I realize eating vegan is probably more expensive.

Just get some universal RV vent Installation putty tape, and take the brackets lose and put that putty tape under them and tighten them back down with screws/bolts that have a rubber washer.. But then cool-seal the entire roof and it will help deflect heat and keep it a bit cooler inside.. Peace!!

Ugh. Leaks. The bane of my existence right now. I have hurricane damage to my van and my house. If you haven't already repaired it, DONT USE SILICONE on your bus. Use this for your bus: Geocel 28100V Pro Flex Crystal Clear RV Flexible sealant. The cheapest was on Amazon (I don't know why I can't paste the link here), but if you're Prime members and you think you can hold off on the project you should order a few tubes...In regards to budget, I ALWAYS, EVERY MONTH, no fail always have some random, unexpected expense so I've added $200 to my budget (ex, one month it was spark plugs, next it was ignition coils, another month was dental issue, another it was a kitty cat vet emergency...always something). Hugs!

I've considered it to create a channel for quite a while. years, in fact. I think I should. but I accidentally dropped a beer onto my brand new laptop and it fried the motherboard. ( good grief).. so I've only used my phone(s) for internet past 2 plus years. and I'm not sure if to buy a notepad will work ( cheap prices) and I have no editing skills. I'm not going to fork out a bunch of money unless I have a decent following on RU-vid to make up for it. you guys are probably in my top 2 favourite of youtubers, currently. and here you're brand new. you guys are wonderful. is Colorado a decent place to live and stealth? I keep hearing of it from strangers and aquintances to go there. I may check it out this coming spring.

oh... I forgot. I live in a conversion van and spending over a year n half going to the beach nearly everyday freaking rust developed in no time on the top part they added. I also noticed the lamination on fiber glass areas turned to looking pretty bad. living in California for so long my cars didn't rot this quickly... holy crap. so be careful if you decide to beach it. from my experience in Florida I have several leaks now and top area where TV is and cabinets smell like white mold. ever since I treated the rust with a can of spray the leaks have stopped. sometime very soon I'm going to see if I can treat the mold. I can only smell it if I open those doors. it hasn't grown.
@neeneec5394
@neeneec5394 7 лет назад
and PS if anyone curious why I haven't looked into the mold issue. I've shined flashlights and no sign of it nor anything wet. I had to solve the leak issues first. there weren't any rust signs and took a long time to figure out where and cause of leaks. then rust formed .. rust spray ironically stopped the leaks. I have no idea what I'm doing... I have lights and power controls to unscrew plus I don't know how to get the ceiling off. I don't want to fuck things up. so next I'm going to go into cabinets and try to remove back area to be able to clean... get a better picture. it isn't a health issue with closed... can barely smell it with cabs open. everything stored up there like DVDs etc are in air tight bags etc. I've heard conversion vans and RVs are very well known to leak. I just hands down know that the Atlantic salt air is at fault for this. things I'm unable to resolved is a super long road trip for me... my #1 mechanic and is very cheap.

So yo, I just watched your live stream and totally support your homeless food efforts! But um I gotta say, I agree, 900$ for yourselves is outrageous! I totally wanna financial contribute, but I'm on a fixed income and hitting the road myself! So I wanna know you can both stretch the dollars I may give you for these efforts to feed as many as possible!!! I also wanna spread the word to groups I know who have similar efforts! But please show me you can stretch it, or I fear your efforts may be doomed! I know a lady I can connect you with who's efforts in this area of new England line up if you'd like? All that being said... I totally luv you two! I'm enjoying your vids and gaining inspiration for my soon to be bus! Being a new Englander myself I can totally relate to you guys! So keep on rocking! Btw Kaylee I shared my leftover vegan gluten free cheesymac this weekend and got mad props for reviews!! Oh one last thing... A thought for a video for yas... Whats life on the bus with a dog like? Pros and cons.... Yanno food, fur, companionship and all that.... Would live to hear your take on it!

Gypsy Jasmyne I really hope us being open and honest about the cost of our van life doesn't hurt this initiative as they are independent from one another. We're big believers in good food and the health benefits of eating local & organic as much as we possibly can. We don't talk much about it because our intention isn't to be pushing animal or environmental rights on people but for us $15 each a day is what we budget because we feel good about the sourcing of food we eat. We wish you all the best with your conversion & really appreciate you taking the time to check out our channel and give us some input :)

NJO is clearly living in his rich parents' guest house ( I would say mom's basement, but he sounds snarky (as you put it) enough to possibly be a rich kid... he doesn't understand poverty, nor why people enter into poverty, including medical reasons, psychological reasons, and just sheer bad luck.. Also, he must not be well educated, at least didn't pay attention in economics class, or he would have learned that in some parts of the country, $2000 a month for full time work is relatively hard to come by without a degree, and as these 2 are working part time jobs that don't require a degree, with youtube on the side, making 20-100 a video, 2 times a week, it would be reasonable to group them as one person's income for the sake of KingTomato's question.

How much did you have in savings before you started your trip? You have mentioned some jobs you have done and those were great ideas, but from what I could tell, you were not bringing in anywhere near $2000. When you look at your finances in comparison to your living expenses, how long do you think you can sustain doing the van life before you will have to replenish your savings? Clean up the roof under the panel brackets, install a piece of sheet metal for support, then reinstall the panel brackets on the newly installed sheet metal. It's just a LEAK, it is important to fix it YES, yet .... it's not that difficult to fix. RIGHT?

I'm just givin ya shit :) When I was "vegan" for a year the only animal food I didn't give up was egg whites and fish. I had no dairy or meat. I still havent eaten red meat in almost 10yrs! It's tough to go good luck!

But is your combined income more than 33% of your Boston life, too? Otherwise the saving doesn't work. Also, you don't have a mortgage because I guess you don't own property anymore. Lastly, 450 / 1350 $ pP per month for food, holy shit. Thats 13€ per day,which seems excessive, given that a sweet-potato dinner for two costs around 3 bucks.

That budget record does not tell much. Fuel is debatable 1 vehicle vs 2 with a lifestyle of only traveling X days per year. No excuse for eating out a lot. With our large garden, 2 of us spend $400 per month. Home repair is much more. we just spent $8,000 on new water system, $1500 hvac repair on & on. Home laundry = power and appliance replacement. Insurance = get what you pay for. Mortgage, if you pay off in 20 years= rent free the rest of life. We did it by never paying interest on a charge card., simple economics. Of coarse we are older. Car or vehicles without garage = higher 15 year cost and poor access to a trusted mechanic. Internet/phone= getting mostly what you pay for. Electric? well, folks pee away far too much just from poor habits, large stupid appliances & so forth. But I hope you two can save enough to afford to pay half for a small economical place when real-estate cycles to it's next drop. Timing is everything with real-estate. Sure enjoy your videos of you two having your heads screwed on right.

Definitely. There are plenty of people who have figured out how to live a life more frugally than these two without moving into a van/bus. My husband and I live very comfortably and happily on well under $3k in a regular month (though of course, we do get hit with a surprise bill now and again, but we always have the money to cover it). We both work an average of 20 hrs/week as freelancers and bring in way more than enough to cover our bills. We still rent, but at the rate of saving, should be able to get a property pretty soon, which will only give us more financial leverage in the future. We also have regular access to hot, running water, plenty of kitchen space for cooking. I prefer it to van life!

I would have accepted like 10 bucks to make, portion out food with plentiful of leftovers if given 1 meal out if it. I happen to be a great cook. I don't know what your jobs were... but I use to work sometimes 80 hours a week and I still found time to cook because no time for a long lunch or eat out. plus most grocery foods suck. one job where 80 hours a week/ 7 days... my transmission went out. I had a cab driver for 3 weeks and made me get up an extra hour early plus a friend in Italy calling me for wake ups. I still fucking cooked for next day... I slept while showering ( once) and in cab until I got a coffee. thank god I got fired from that job. my dog had an emergency and plant manager found out I am gay who hitter up on me... fucking fired me. that's what led me to live in van and take off. but I fucking did it . I'm on beers right now. I'll stop posting.

I eat a lot, bike upwards of 200 miles per week (so I burn a lot of calories), and eat out a few times per month and that has averaged out to $220 spent on food per month this year. Even doubling that for two people, you’re spending twice as much on food as myself. That’s crazy. And I eat about 95% vegetarian/vegan.

Bigger screws is right, and silicon the crap outa them before and after you put them in. Also, run a wire from your alternator to your charge controller so when there's no sun you can still idle and charge your batteries. As for making money off youtube, your better off making porn video's....just kidding, LOL

You say mortgage $1000, that can be a very misleading number as you get that money back when you sell and since interest rates are so low you might actually get more back.
@njo9966
@njo9966 7 лет назад
You get that money back when you sell? You need to re-read your mortgage, that's not how it works. Mortgages are front loaded. You pay majority interest (not principle) in the early years. This means you build equity much more slowly vs a level payment loan. At the end of a 30 year mortgage (which is standard, but maybe you have a 15 yr or an adjustable, it doesn't matter because it still works the same way) the math comes out the same, but who actually stays in their home for 30 years? With that said, I have a feeling these 2 weren't actually paying a "mortgage" in boston. They probably were paying rent. But I'm basing that on nothing and I could easily be wrong. Haha

$1921 a month is too much. You shouldn't be spending more than $10/month on laundry. You shouldn't be spending more than $100/week on food. If you fixed that^ then you'd be spending = $1371 which is still really high for what you guys are doing.
@NomadicMovement

$7 for food per day? That's just not possible for us. We're doing 15 per day and think that's pretty cheap ($5 per meal per person).
@cmdctrl4292
@cmdctrl4292 7 лет назад
I feed a family of 3 on 100/week and we eat a lot of food and very healthy. Meal prepping is your friend, eggs are your friend, buying meat only *if* on sale, avoiding expensive produce (avocados), protein powder is 1.25 a meal, beans are cheap af, pasta is cheap af, ramen is incredibly versatile, and we only drink water and milk. Walmart for non-produce items and where we live, "Kroger" for produce items. My average meal cost about $1.50

Oh, also, we go to a laundry mat once a month and it cost us $20, so idk what you guys are doing wrong there but 60 is wtf... & we have way more clothes than you because our son is a dirt magnet.

Ha. I get it. The truth is, I spend almost $1,000/month on myself and RARELY eat out. I work out 6-9 times a week (25 full programs via beach body) and very, very health conscious (someone called me "Friday Night Pizza" the other day because I looked good...hahaha...never been called Friday Night Pizza). Keep up the good work.
