Cost Vs. Price of a Big Mac

While the price might seem reasonable, it's just the tip of the iceberg. When you factor in all the ingredients, labor, overhead, and of course, the iconic branding, it's clear that McDonald's is making a tidy profit on every burger sold. It might be worth it for you if you're in love with that special sauce. Did these numbers surprise you?

Do you know how many burgers they sell in 1 hour
@bsabruzzo
@bsabruzzo 4 месяца назад
@@BIGBamBam86 No... but the average McDonald's takes in between $2.7 to $3.5 million a year. The estimated actual profit is around 5% to 6%, or $175,000 to $210,000 on the high end. This is the franchise owner's salary and this is where the increase of wages from $13 (average wage in Virginia's McDonald's) to the proposed $15 federal minimum wage, an increase of $104,00 annually (average of 25 crew members full time). But those crew members aren't the only people the McDonald's franchise employs. There are grounds keeper, maintenence men, and delivery drivers, just to name a few. In fact any employ that works for the companies that provides gas for the trucks, electricity for the building, trash removal for the property, oil disposal, and so on got raises, increasing those costs. At this point, just to pay the person who owns the franchise the same as a person to flip burgers you would need to raid the price of burgers to make more than $3.5 million . And if the owner makes even close to what a burger and fry cook make, they would have less stress closing the McDonald's and becoming an employee, so the argument that they earn less doesn't wash. As for how many burgers are sold in a day... each franchise gets from 2000 to 5000 customers daily. The average order is complex because some people buy multiple items or meals and some but just a soda. Using the same year's (2022) numbers, the $3.5 million in revenue comes out to about $9589 a day. That's $1.92 per customer for 5000 customers a day or $4.80 per customer at 2000 customers a day. So, the best estimate is probably a McDonald's restaurant sells about 2000 burgers a day on the highest end.
@bsabruzzo
@bsabruzzo 4 месяца назад
@@BIGBamBam86 By bast guesstimate, using math, each franchise sells maybe 2000 per day. The per hour rate depends on whether the shop is 25 hours or opens at 7 am and closes at 11 pm. So 83 to 125 per hour. But that's more the number of customers per hour. No guarantee each will buy one burger with their $4.79.

@@bsabruzzo it's far simpler than McDonald's the company has a huge market share in food shipping. Franchises have just been the carrot on top. The pricing for materials are much cheaper than you think, not to mention how absolutely trash McDonald's America's is. It cost closer to 30¢ per burger with everything, people just don't realize how much of a monopoly companies have. FCL... or Food Cost , and labor are typically under 50% for a business to make 10-15% returns. This is packaging, coupons and discounts, bag, napkin, sauces... and waste... plus labor. Also they typically come in a meal deal where the fries and soft drink are FAR less. So they price the burgers higher to encourage you to get a meal deal. Most of their profits come from those fries and drinks.

How much is the depreciation on the equipment? What’s advertising? Insurance? Your food cost seems to be 40% If it’s not 15-20% that Franchise won’t make it

I used to do financing at a uk McDonald’s. It’s not a lot of profit in one as we can only buy ingredients from 1 supplier. Generally it’s only good money as McDonald’s in UK are never empty

Ordered 2 Mcdoubles about a month ago. Special order no ketchup no mustard add lettuce add big Mac sauce. Charged almost a buck extra for lettuce and sause. Almost the same as a big Mac without a center bun and sesame seeds. BOGO receipt survey coupon so got 2 for under 4 bucks.

This isn't close to how much it actually cost. Franchise fees, lease fees, taxes, just labor and food isn't including enough context bruh.

to be fair they prob are making $2+ on a big mac, thats why you cook at home and only have fast food if you get home super late and just need a quick meal

Not it’s not, it’s costing them 15-20 an hours per employee, purchasing equipment. maintenance, permits, fines, rent if you don’t own the property, insurance. The list can go on.

Forgets the fact if you made it at home you’d need to buy a pickle for probably 80p, a full onion for about 40p, the patties which usually come in a pack of 4 for about £2.00, the bun which are all multipacks for about £1.50, all the sauces which are now about £1.50 to £5.00 each and then a lettuce for £1. So to make one Big Mac home made you’d end up spending about £10 at home and probably make it taste 10x worse but on the plus side you’ve got excess food to use.

I have worked in restaurant construction for many years and I have done multiple franchises including many McDonald's. McDonald's like many restaurants are not able to get insurance for lots of knife skills, the kitchens are literally fool proof. Hot grill and fryer are some of the only real high risks in the kitchen.. this estimate for lettuce, pickles and onions is way way high, same with the rolls. Lettuce comes in big pre chopped bags and doesn't go off like in the past, it's chemically treated and stays green for days. Buns same thing, no such thing as a moldy roll, chemicals have bread as soft days after opening the bag. Onions in McDonald's are dehydrated and dumped into a bucket and water poured on and onions run out before they go bad, the amount of waste is minimal. Good example is similar hamburger rolls are $1.39 at Walmart for 8 and that's retail not wholesale that McDonald's has access to

You didn’t include utilities, tax, and the cost the franchise owner has to pay McDonald’s every month. They effectively make not much. That’s why they have to sell so many

I remember when mcdonalds in the ptc georgia walmart had their burger deals for 29 and 49 cents. They are still open. Here in canada a mcdonalds visit is gonna be like 20 bucks minimum and they wonder why no one goes 😂 i saw an article just yesterday mcdonalds has been steadily losing money for the last 10 years and are getting desperate to get customers back they said they would offer a 7 dollar meal deal (as if thats an actual deal). Try still less than half that price.

Packaging costs for carton and what about paper bag cost for takeaway as well, napkins, electricity for keeping it cold, cooking expenses.

But... what about production, storage and transportation of the ingredients? And the energy to heat it. And the box and bag and free napkins and the toilet flush you used when entering the store bathroom and and the electricity to keep the place running. What about the manager who keeps staff scheduled or the license to run the computer systems that track your order? The paper receipt/printer or servers running the app, wifi, phone lines, other utilities. The imaging and advertising of the product, do you see where I'm going with this?
