Photo essay of Cotacachi Ecuador in the province of Imbabura is a tranquil place that was invaded by retirees. Although it has retained much of it's original charm it has been changed for ever and the price of real estate has risen above the means of most Ecuadorian. Is this place a dream come true or now a nightmare? It depends on who you ask.....

I agree ! Cotacachi and it’s people are wonderful! I went there recently November and fell in love ! I am changing my NY for Ecuador ! I love everything from there

This beautiful video is about 13 years old. I first viewed it while I still lived in Florida and I have now lived in Cotacachi 12 years. I was, and am so grateful for this video allowing me the feel of Cotacachi before I made it my home. The best decision of my life at 68. One day in Calderon Park and I was sold. The people are the nicest in the World. So much has changed in twelve years but still a small tourist town. I live right in the center with balconies overlooking a main street and it is almost impossible to look at a video without knowing someone in it. And they treat seniors like royalty.

I made only slide-show presentations back then and they were beautiful, I always tried to get the feel of the place in my presentations. Your comment makes me feel good, thank you so much! If you have been there that long you may remember a business I started. It was about 6 - 7 years ago. It was called 'La Guitarra' and I had a nice place by a plaza. Everyone like it but I didn't have enough business so I decided to close it and leave. A group of local musicians 'Shades of Grey' played one night and I packed the place! I wonder if they are still together. In March I will return to Colombia. Thank you so much for your comment, it made my day!

Shades of Gray are still around as I see them advertised at mostly Expat places. The little old barefoot lady and the man sitting in the doorway are no longer with us. When I came here in 2012 I insisted on "only Spanish" areas. Took 2 months to find what I wanted, a townhouse in the very center of town. I have been there ever since with my two balconies overlooking the main street. The whole feeling of the place was right for me. Thanks so much for allowing my walk down memory lane.
