for a couple months last year, i commuted on my XC race bike (specialized chisel) and generally used it as my primary form of transport, as one car was broken and the other car is too pretty for the city lol. I could do exactly what you did, make little random fun lines out of urban features. people often forget that MTBs are still bicycles and make excellent tools for transport. after I sold that bike I learned that the current owner also commutes on it. When I replaced it with another, less clapped out Chisel, I commuted quite a bit on that bike as well. (edited spelling)

Got back to a MTB after a gravel bike, a pretty aggressive steel hardtail with a 150 front. Yes, it is slower than the gravel bike, but way more fun and takes me everywhere on every type of tarain.

I like my XC bike to commute because here in southern germany there are a lot of woods you are crossing trough to go places with small dirt trails and gravel roads. But with the Trailbike it's also nice if you don't want to arrive super quick.

Agree with your point and a fun vid to watch. I’ve owned dozens of bikes and currently have only 2! 1 is an aggressive hardtail the 2nd is a XC bike modified for street with rigid fork, hookworm tyres, MX riser bars, racks, kickstand, dropper etc.

I love my mountain bike for street and light trail commuting. I feel unstoppable on the street with these. Needs to cut through a path and then jump a curb? No problem. This video perfectly demonstrates why I love it
@johnnydoe66

I agree that a mtn bike isn't really a good choice for commuting. Maybe if you swapped to a more street oriented tire and gearing, but then it wouldn't be a mtn bike anymore. I have taken my mtn bikes on rides through the city on my way to a trail and back, but like yourself I played along the way on features; walls, curbs, stairs etc or else it would have been one long a miserable time. A friend and I use to do a route that totaled 35 miles w/ just 5 of that being singletrack, but because of all the urban "playground" stuff it was fun. One area of sidewalk (half mile) was literally like a jump line because of all the sections of concrete being heaved and in disrepair, they've since rebuilt that whole area of town now 😕

While I know close to nothing about bicycle geometry, I can tell you I rode a 2011 ish HardRock as a commuter bike for the better part of a year. A set of Serfas Drifters (as recommended by the local bicycle police) and a rear rack made it perfect. Didn't set any land speed records, but it was great on poorly maintained streets, and could easily carry a 30 pack of cheap beer.

I have a nukeproof scout which I think is pretty similar to the norton and I can ride it pretty much anywhere. But the biggest thing is tires, if you want to do more commuting type riding switching out the tires for some xc style tires would make a huge difference. I run 2.6 maxxis tires which are amazing on the trails I ride but super sluggish on anything hard packed.

I can confirm I have an XC shaped frame that has pannier mounts so they were expecting people to commute on it.😀

You hit the nail on the head when describing the design ethos of most entry-level XC oriented HTs being better all-in-one bikes. Even my 120mm travel 67 degree hta HT isn't very pleasant to ride around on the street. That steep seat tube combined with long reach only works when you are constantly pedaling and moving around on the bike. Casual, static riding feels awkward and uncomfortable. Knowledge of how a bike's frame geometry affects how it feels to your body isn't something that most casual riders consider, so kudos for laying it out there.

That said I love the geo of the frame, I appreciate the XM34 as a base to upgrade from. I would throw a dropper on it immediately and I’m not mad at all that It doesn’t come with it. My only complaint is I would prefer it come with a 2.4 tire but that’s an easy fix and otherwise can not wait to pick one up and to start modding it.

90s mountain bikes are ideal commuting, gravel, slower road, light mountain, do it all bike. This bike is not that, it’s designed for (and much better at) aggressive off road use. I own 2 90s mountain bikes and a Fixie, and this just might be my first “Real” modern mountain bike.

Good video! It came under web search for "hardtail as road bike". Yesterday I have tried to go up at steep hill on hybrid bike and failed miserably. I see fit people on road bikes practicing climbing here, but I'm not fit. Hardtail seems to have much easier gear ratio for climbing. And tires are good on crappy roads where you have to switch from road to sidewalks and ride on uneven cobblestone.
@ekims_echoes
@ekims_echoes Год назад
If I could only own one bike, it was be an aggressive(ish) hardtail with two wheel sets. I think the two wheel sets is key so that you can have better tires for in town riding, but easily switch to knobbies for the dirt. I see your point with the limitations, especially with your body position, but IDK if that's the case with all aggressive hardtails. When I owned a Marin San Quentin, I got along just fine on paved path, putting down miles - though I only had knobby tires which was a bummer. Maybe the all around compromise would be something like a 67 degree headtube and bit longer reach. It would definitely be a compromise, though, and it sure is nice to have more than one bike.

Completely agree about commuting on an MTB (even an XC orientated one in my view.... I ended up getting a CX bike on a cycle to work scheme a few years ago....That certainly improved the commute.... I personally think the most do it all bike would be a gravel bike that takes decent sized tyres.....although it'd be nice to have a hardtail 29er stashed away for when you really need it....Hmmm ?

Use cross country tires and it solves a lot of problems. Or get a cross country hardtail and put a bigger travel fork on it with a shorter stem. You'll get more speed, but the headtube angle will slacken a bit so you can bomb stairs easier.

If you haven’t stopped taking design suggestions….. I noticed you pointed out in an earlier video how much room there was between the chainring and the chain stays. MAYBE - have the chain stays flare out off the BB sooner so users can put fatter tires on if they want. I’ve always wanted an HT I could put 3.0s on comfortably without having to get a fat bike.

I might have missed this in previous videos, but what "future-proofing" have you worked into the design? A good example is going to a newer standard on something like the derailleur hanger (the SRAM standard) for instance. Upgrading bikes is fun, but a mtb dies when its upgrade path is a dead end (rip nonboost).
