While Stairway to Heaven is played more often and is what Led Zeppelin is known for (if you aren’t a LZ fan) it is really THIS song that the band wants to be known for. The complexity of the beat, the lyrics, the power of the song, the maturity of songwriting - it truly takes you on a journey.

No matter what all those other people tell you, always do the studio version of Led Zep first. Then look at the live if you're interested. Hear the song as intended by the band originally.

Led Zeppelin is my favorite band of all time! U can literally put on any album and listen to it front to back without ever wanting to change the song! Not to mention Robert Plants voice!! A few of my favorites are Going to California, All my love, D'yer Mak'er, Dazed and Confused, When the Levee Breaks, Fool in the rain, Over the hills and far away, Thank you, What is and what should never be, The Ocean....I could go on for days! 🥰

Some background info on the band. Sorry it’s so long. 😊 Led Zeppelin is a British band created by Jimmy Page in 1968. Jimmy had been in the Yardbirds, and when they broke up, there were a couple of concerts still scheduled to be played. Jimmy took this opportunity to form a new band that fit his vision of Rock music. Light and Shade. Pushing the envelope of sound. Pioneering the concept of album oriented music. No singles if at all possible. Led Zeppelin’s first album was completed in 36 hours of session and production time. They did not have a record contract. Jimmy Page and their manager Peter Grant took the album to various labels. They got turned down by UK record labels so, they headed to the U.S. Atlantic Records signed them based on that first album, never seeing or hearing the band in person. Page and Grant crafted the most amazing contract that changed the music industry forever. Led Zeppelin had total control of everything, Atlantic records basically just pressed and distributed their albums. Everything from big money ahead of release, 90% of sales to the band, when they would tour. Where they would tour. When they would release albums. Even the cover art. Up until this time bands got almost nothing. Band members: Jimmy Page - lead guitar, acoustic and electric, banjo, mandolin, founder, songwriter, and producer of all Led Zeppelin albums. Started as a session musician in London. Keeper of the LZ flame to this day, he’s 80 years old and still the coolest Rock God. John Paul Jones - bass and keyboards but, he could play almost an instrument thrown at him. The secret and silent assassin. Also music arranger for the band. Began as a session musician in London. Worked with Jimmy Page prior to Led Zeppelin. Classically trained. Real name is John Baldwin. John Bonham - greatest Rock drummer ever. Grew up playing drums to jazz music which gave him a swing that most drummers could only dream of. Power, subtlety, followed the lead guitar more than the bass. Sadly, passed away in 1980 at age 32. Led Zeppelin could not go on without him. It had to be those four musicians to create the magic. Robert Plant - vocals, harmonica. The Golden God, amazing front man, unparalleled Rock singer, played the harmonica like he was born with it, and was pure sex, charisma, humor, and prototype for future Rock lead singers. He and John Bonham had been in a little known band in the Birmingham UK area. Both recommendations from Terry Reid (popular and excellent singer) when he had to turn down being in Led Zeppelin. August 1968: Robert and John Bonham (Bonzo) are 20. John Paul Jones 22. Jimmy Page 24. 8 studio albums, 10 compilation albums, 108 songs, 4 live albums, 16 music/concert videos, 19 singles (against the band’s choice), 7 #1 albums, and over 300 million albums sold worldwide. For the 2007 O2 Arena Tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, called Celebration Day, there were 20 million ticket requests for only 18,000 seats. They had to use a lottery system, and only 2 tickets per person.

The time signature of this song is what gives it such a distinctive/unique feeling.

Plant’s beautiful writing of his fascinating experience, with Page driving through what seemed an endless desert. They were on their way to a music festival, the time & space is really is the cultural difference of the people of that region. They couldn’t understand what each other was speaking, but their connection was the music. In the 90’s when Page & Plant toured together, they created a band of musicians from India, because they loved the sound they created. None of the band members had been to Kashmir, my guess the name sounded more lyrical. Though Plant definitely fell in love with Morocco, & still visits there, as often as he can. He wrote the lyrics, but it was a couple years before they got the music the way they wanted, the timing etc. is very intricate. This is the song all the band members are most proud of, though Stairway To Heaven, is the one they’re most known for. Led Zeppelin songs are hard hitting, amazing stories of JRR Tolkein like fantastic places. Tolkien was a massive influence on Plant & Page and their style/content was created from that fantasy world. Kashmir is a song more about the journey than the actual place. “It was a single-track road which neatly cut through the desert." Plant said to Cameron Crow in an interview once. Keep going down this massive rabbit hole. The Journey is MIND BLOWING! Enjoy~

Around my 16th birthday (1990) I got heavy into Zeppelin after seeing Robert Plant in concert with The Black Crowes opening on their first big tour. I already knew a bunch of Zeppelin’s music because it was on the radio all the time, but I bought all their albums on cassette and spent an easy 18 months listening to basically nothing else while learning to play guitar. Every last thing they ever recorded is at least good with most of their music being incredible. They deserve their legendary status and are still one of the best selling artists in history

They put their souls into their music, they would perform 3 to 4 hour concerts, with NO breaks. Here’s two live songs you need to try. Madison Square Gardens (1973) Since I’ve Been Loving You, you can see & feel the soulful Blues from them. Live at Earls Court (1975) In My Time Of Dying, Page plays the hell out of a steel guitar. These are just two standouts, though there are so many more, ENJOY!

The song that was in the 1998 "Godzilla" movie was a cover of this with new Rap lyrics by Puff Daddy with Jimmy Page on guitar titled "Come With Me" Anybody who says the lyrics in rock music don't say anything has never listened to TOOL.

the reason some ppl would say "there's no meaning behind rock songs" it's because they can't actually listen to understand it, all they here is the instruments and a voice or voices they think are just blending together, they really have no clue because they don't bother to try. ALL MUSIC HAS MEANING. sometimes even just an instrumental can have meaning behind it, especially to the person making it ... some ppl are just music naive.

It wasn't Kashmir you heard in the film Godzilla, it was a collaboration with Jimmy Page and Puff Daddy based on the song. It was called "Come With Me" and was the theme song of the film. As always, I enjoyed this reaction. You are one of my favourite reactors.

What do the music and lyrics mean to you? At 13, I only had Zeppelin on the radio. No lyrics were available to me. Closing my eyes and soaking it in all was and is a profound experience. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but Zeppelin and this song are deeper than rhyming words put together.

Kashmir is a song you put on and just groove to as you feel the vibes. I don't think any members of Zep have ever spoken on what the song is about and I doubt they ever will. Sometimes in rock songs the lyrics have a deep meaning, sometimes they're just words that sound good together and it's up to the listener to infer the meaning.

Yep, there was a cover of this song in Godzilla, either 1998 or 2000, with Robert Plant and Diddy called Come With Me. More like Diddy doing what he usually does and takes the beat, instrumentals, or chorus of established songs and adding to it. An actual cover of this is from a British group called Escala. The person that wrote that comment, I’d like to know what genre of music they listen to. There’s tons of meanings in rock music. Have they not heard from Aerosmith, Metallica, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, just to name a few

What the lyrics mean: per Robert Plant who wrote it, it was written on a drive through the desert in Morocco with Jimmy Page. “I kept bumping down a desert track and there was nobody for miles, except a guy on a camel. The whole inspiration for the song was from the fact that the road went on and on and on. It was a single-track road which cut neatly through the desert…it looked like you were driving down a channel. I thought, this is great, but one day…Kashmir. That’s my Shanghai-la.” At night he could see a sea of stars above him. You have to know Robert’s great interest in history, and that he was very well-read. The lyrics could be inspired by Rudyard Kipling, whose writing was set during a time when Britain ruled India. Or it could be the “hippie trail” the route followed by hippies all the way to Kathmandu, Nepal, in the sixties and early seventies. To this day Robert refers to himself as a hippie. It could also be the journey Led Zeppelin had been on since 1968. Could the “Elders of a gentle race” be the public won over by “the talk and song from tongues of lilting grace…whose “sounds caress [their] ear”? IMHO, Robert pulled from all of these things, and with his talent of writing stories or journeys, has given us a tale of immense beauty and individual interpretation.

The best rock songs have great lyrics. The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, pretty much anything by Rush … the lyrical brilliance sometimes gets lost behind the sound, but it’s there.

Kashmir, the da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da is the sound of movement, the tires on a pavement or train moving along a track. And you have JPJ on the keys with the moroccan or Indian sounds. And yes, he may have been traveling to Morocco, but let’s face it. Kashmir fits so much better in these lyrics.

Great commentary on the lyrics of this song... Like all great song lyrics they are almost poetry... And any piece can be read by an individual and interpreted in his way... but someone else can read something different in it... Which is just waht great art is about... everybody taking their own thing away from it. As for the guy talking about rock lyrics not meaning anything... it might have been an idea if he could have given you an exapmle of a song that he thought had no meaning. After all The Beatles song "I Am The Walrus".... may sound like gibberish to lots and lots of people.. but becuase it based on word play mainly and John Lenoon's love for Edward Lear's nonsense poems and LEws Carolls writing to me it has meaning.. some of the phrases are very esoteric.. but they can be translated as you want them to be.

I feel if it's as they say...if a song equals a story then One Led Zeppelin tune is the equivalent of a trilogy. They twist and turn, and take the listener on a journey. I feel like Robert Plant's voice is like another instrument in the song compilation. His part is often independently from the other instruments. Ah yes, you tell 'em, Cliff! An open mind would help. The og rock n roll could run circles around some of today's cookie cutter music. That said, you're def on the right track, but I would look at some better sites to get the 411 on these lyrics. You were headed in the right direction, an overall theme here is a spiritual journey. During the 60s and 70s Kashmir was known as a spiritual mecca, much like Shangri-la, the Heaven on Earth reference you mentioned. So the song lyrically and sonically is driving toward that place of enlightenment, where we can see the world for what it is, where we have a bird's eye or pilot's view of the wastelands below us and, basically, how to trancend above them. It's a pretty deep song when you really dig into it. One of the best songs of all time, imo. ❤

Not sure if it's true, but I heard they had Morocco (desert, camels, Bedouins) in mind when writing this but named it Kashmir (which is a valley between Pakistan and India) simply because they liked how the word Kashmir sounds.

He remembers when physical graffiti (album with this song on it) came out. It became his favorite but everyone around him hated it because it was a more experimental sound for the band. I’m going to disagree with you on the lyrics and their purpose. In the song Page refers to Shangri-la, a mythical realm of perfection and immortality. Kind of an Asian version of Heaven. I know that schools don’t teach literature written by dead white guys but so much of Page’s intent is lost if people don’t know. We have more in common than we do not. I think that’s important
