He practiced it over and over again on a circle on pavement. His score improved tremendously. I saw a video where not long before the actual event, he took a passenger along on one of his attempts, and failed-- overshot the circle. Not to worry-- the extra weight of the passenger was enough to throw the landing off.

Don't even know why people would ask this question. Mike patey built a specialized plane, chasing grams and ounces to get it as light as possible. Your plane is just too heavy. Simple as that.
@АндрейЮрьевич-з7х
Aerodynamics is not only about weight. Underweight is a key word to google 😁
@MegaDargar
@MegaDargar Год назад
@@АндрейЮрьевич-з7хI never mentioned aerodynamics. weight is key when taking off in such a short distance that was required for taking off from a helicopter pad. Mike patey added more power, stripped lots of weight, and moved weight lower in the plane for a lower center of gravity. Like for example removed the fuel tanks from the wings, and replaced it with a central tank in the tail. So it could have a increased braking power without flipping onto its nose.

Hi Trent thanks for posting that. Just some numbers for the viewers. So density altitude in Dubai was around 2500ft at ground level. Helipad was just over 600ft in the air. We could not reply on strong winds due to massive rotors rolling of the building so the wind was only 7kts unlike some of the super short STOL landings on the net. Basically over 12kts of wind and it was almost unflyable.
@lennartbiermann8153
@lennartbiermann8153 Год назад
Big hunk of respect for pulling that off. I tried to replicate it in FS2020 and could not do it below 12 knots IIRC (I think the turbulences from the building are not really replicated in the sim). To be fair that was with pretty much a default Carbon Cub. Also I loved the background clips from Mike about the aircraft build.

The densityaltitude was around 1900ft during the attempt due to high temperature in dubai. Additionally the tower makes choppy air so they had to land with minimal headwind. That all makes it a lot harder than taking 600ft and get smooth headwind. It is fun to play around and see if you could do it, but some people in the comment section think that this is just another Tuesday.

I have a hard time believing that dive was all just for show as he would have lost ground effect at the end of the pad and the mains left contact just prior to the for end of it, now that's not to say he didn't dramatize the dive a little bit for the excitement of it, but I don't think it was possible to maintain level flight and idk about the rest of you but with o ly 600 feet to spare an accelerated stall doesn't sound like much fun

Great video. There has been a lot of trash talk about how STOL airplanes could do this, the competitions and stuff, and I think this really demonstrated that even with a light airplane, you're still going to have a lot of problems doing this. Still, thanks for doing this and showing it off.

@philipsmith1990 Год назад
Of course the stunt had the advantage of having 600' of air underneath the pad, so as long as there was enough airspeed to give control authority to get the nose down after going over the edge then ok. That would make the take off pretty safe and in fact that is exactly how the take off was flown in the stunt.. Landing would be different. If you just failed to stop in time, and even if the tail wasn't damaged going over the edge, the airspeed would be very low. Would 600' be enough to regain control and flying speed? That would be an interesting experiment as well.
@charlesmartin1121
@charlesmartin1121 Год назад
It's like with Alex Honnold. I bet a number of good stol pilots could take off and land in the same distance as Luke did. The key question is would they be willing to risk the consequences of doing it 600 feet off the ground on a circular helipad?
@patheddles4004
@patheddles4004 Год назад
And that's very much why they had to modify the plane so much, to allow reasonable safety margins. They didn't have to stick the first attempt, but every attempt from the first one at least had to be a safe go-around or touch-and-go. Offhand it took 70-odd attempts before they stuck one, and hell yeah that's impressive.
@charlesmartin1121
@charlesmartin1121 Год назад
@@patheddles4004 Definitely impressive. Again the reason this achievement was really noteworthy was the danger factor. If the same length to land and takeoff were drawn on a dirt road, like Trent did, a number of his fellow Cowboys could stick it. But include the risk of possibly dying, and those willing to do it drops away steeply. Just like a lot of nonclimbers think Alex Honnold is the best climber in the world, but he isn't (though he is very good). What sets Alex apart is the willingness and mental strength to climb really difficult big walls with no protection against a fall.

Caveat: stopped at 3:29, maybe you correct the mistake later in the video. You made a slight mistake with the runway length calculation. The 12% get added every 1000 feet, but it's not 12% of the first 1000 feet times 4, it's "gain 1000 feet, add 12%, gain another 1000 feet, add another 12%, repeat... So, instead of calculating 80 ft * 1.48 = 118.4, you should have calculated 80 ft * 1.12^4 = 125.9 ft. Should make it a little easier. :-)

Foolhardy not impressive. What’s the stall speed on that Red Bull aircraft, like 2 pixie giggles? Helicopters beat the air into submission, Bush planes use aerodynamic “buoyancy”. It probably lifts off when a big guy walking by rips one. Add to the whole stunt the literal built in altitude… not being a blowhard just realistic. Carrier pilots do this everyday, only in machines that weigh magnitudes more and are blasting along much faster. Oh and the building is ducking and weaving and it’s covered with your fellow servicemen. But it’s entertainment, so have fun and stay safe!

The real question here is what was their headwind during landing? As it doesn't matter if you can land in that length, but what is your relative speed in relation to your headwind. If you have enough headwind on your nose you can literally land going backwards. Say if your landing speed is 35 mph and you have a 45 mph headwind you will be going -10 mph at landing. You will literally land going backwards. Now if you match your landing speed and headwind speed you can literally land in a hover. It has nothing to do with your calculated landing distance, but your relative speed in relation to your headwind speed.

judging by the video, the plane, when landing on the helipad, had an extremely rear centering, which helped it to parachute and approach the helipad at extremely low speed, thereby reducing landing mileage, and you didn’t take into account that the takeoff from the helipad was essentially a controlled fall and during the takeoff from the site the speed was still low and it was just an undermining of the plane and a dive down from the site, the dive on which the plane picked up speed, but you won’t succeed do it on level ground... but nevertheless you can be congratulated in my opinion, you quite succeeded in your plan ...

Did they have a head wind that would have been able to reduce ground speed? I know you're higher at a higher altitude but they were 600 ft AGL and it looked like the wind was howling up there. It was a sick stunt regardless but if they had a 30knt headwind it would've helped for sure.

Commenting before having finished your attempt... The red bull team also has another advantage, height off the ground for taking off. That's a gamble but he doesn't 100% need to be able to take off in 80ft so long as he has enough altitude to trade for speed. And that seems to be what he did, he pitched down right after leaving the helipad, that might be just a precaution or flair but still, you can't do that on a dirt road and that could help you.

and . . . and . . . and, won't you need a weight in the tail to keep the rear end down when braking, c.of.g shift, stop that noise converter and egg whisk from touching the ground? yep you mentioned wing tanks great test comparison, so take all into consideration, with the mods that M.Patey made, very easily possible

Hey Trent, how can I be your wingman an get a “discovery” flight to see how it is to be in the cockpit. One day I hope to get my private pilots license! I almost got all my testing done to be a A&P mechanic

Luke had to battle wildly variable winds PLUS the fact that a miss could cost him his life. I saw many comments saying that the stunt would be easy for any well seasoned bush pilot. I beg to differ. There is a reason Patey made those mods to the Carbon Cub. Mike was not taking that stunt lightly.

Good job Trent.... they got nothing on you... You were on soft surface..... not hard heli pad! Great job, bud!

I tried this in the freedom fox in Microsoft flight sim just last week and crashed on the helipad approximately 3547 times lol

Dude okra is a power house for healthy guts... And landing on the helipad would take massive Guts 😂... I think it's easier then appears because he also looked like the red bull was a good head wind...

This really isn't a fair comparison... Mike built that carbon cub as light as possible. It's not fair to compare your kitfox to the cub.

"Take Off" "Cliff dive" - that's pretty much how they got the Red Bull plane off the helipad.

You could land it on the helipad with a strong headwind. Remember this guy who stopped in 9’?… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hPakbghLe38.html

There would be no ground effect in Dubai, which is an additional factor. major pucker factor though!

I wonder if Steve Henry was ever a part of this discussion. Steve and Yeehaw 8 is the best STOL setup in the world by a long shot.

Not dead at all….as long as he didn’t short it he would have just flown away….just as he did when he left the helipad. He also had a a pretty good head wind that wasn’t discussed. Landing on the heliport was not that big of a deal in my opinion. As Trent said, the appearance of that small area would absolutely give you a moment of pause.

Yeah, Luke had pressure for sure, but I think it was probably mostly internal. The entire team, from the top to the bottom, strongly stressed that safety was the very highest priority by a large margin. I doubt there would have been a lot of blame placed if Luke decided it couldn't be done. IMHO saying no and showing true wisdom would have been much better than having a more cavalier pilot accept too high of a risk.

That was a great video! Really fun to watch. I liked that you talked about the consequences of the actual stunt...so much more to it than landing short.
@tomcoryell

I think you would land shorter with a fire extinguisher strapped to each leg. You would as they say “stick” the landing as long as you didn’t get sucked out of the open door.
