In 1942 Australia was attacked by the forces of the Imperial Japan. Today, in 2021, how would a hypothetical war between Japan and Australia go? How strong are militaries of Australia and Japan today? Could Japan endanger Australia in the same way? Or could Australia hold its own? Watch to find out.

@@backpackpepelon3867 no body would win the Japanese couldn’t successfully control a supply line to an invading force on the coast of Australia. Result is the same if any other countries tried. Australia would sink the supply vessels forcing a surrender of the invading force, best bet would to simply bomb the coast but everything inland would be out of range. If anyone tried the same to Japan it would be the same scenario but less inland protection. Australia is simply to big for one country to invade while Japan has a advantages geographical advantage as well using the shallow waters for choke points

Australia vs China is N to the millionth power more likely than Australia vs Japan and even China won't have the ability to do something like that ever evenif their current capabilities continue to move forward at their current trajectory. Russia is interested in reasserting dominance in the regions formerly controlled by the USSR. Japan is interested in repelling the advancing regional power of China. And China is interested in becoming a true super power based on economic and military dominance by what they see as their racial superiority.

@АмериканецвРоссии-и4б
@Brett Mitchell news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6444207.stm Short of a full alliance/mutual defense treaty like both have with the US, but in any case it's quite clear that both Japan and Australia regard the others as important partners and friends, even if there isn't a piece of paper saying "we're allies".
@АмериканецвРоссии-и4б
@Brett Mitchell Words have meanings. Sometimes words have different meanings to different people :-) The term "ally" isn't too precisely defined. I quote one definition (from Wikipedia): "An alliance is a relationship among people, groups, or states that have joined together for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose, whether or not explicit agreement has been worked out among them." In this sense, Australia and Japan are definitely allies. FWIW, Wikipedia also considers the RAA between Australia and Japan a military alliance. If Wikipedia isn't authoritative enough for you, the US government defines a number of countries as "major non-NATO allies" without necessarily having mutual defence treaties. You're using a very narrow definition and one that isn't generally accepted.

The new century, or at least the way the 2020's are shaping up suggests that we have underspent, and more importantly let our production capabilities atrophy in a dangerous way. What we really need to do is develop domestic capability, but our federal government seems to prefer outsourcing to potential threats such as communist china than developing skills because of fear of domestic unionization. We also have the capability of obtaining our own nuclear weapons in 90 days (using the Lucas heights reactor) and our abundant Uranium as a source for the bombs. Hell, give me 90 days, a few lathes, some explosives and a heap of refined Uranium and i could build a bomb based on the 'gun type' nuclear bomb designs. Australia’s defence strategy for the defence of the mainland is clearly to defend the air-sea gap with the air force and navy first. For example if China wanted to invade Australia we would not have to fight 2 million Chinese soldiers. We would only have to fight the number that managed to get to Australia via the air sea gap. However once they got a foothold in Australia then we would have to fight up to 2 million. That is what he meant about the army being an afterthought (which was perhaps a poor choice of words). Priority in strategy is to stop the enemy getting here in the first place. We have not yet fought a land campaign on our own soil and we don’t want to have to do that because we would only be doing that if we had lost control of our air and sea approaches, in which case the invader with essentially unlimited numbers and resources would be able to resupply indefinitely until they obtained victory.

Yes, every time I see a video I think, but how would things play out in 10 years and 20 years? In this video for example. Both Australia and Japan are in the middle of massively upgrading their military due to China's looming threat. The new proposed Australian Frigates are bigger than our destroyers and in theory sound quite capable. Likewise Australia is trying to upgrade it's submarine fleet from the 9 mediocre Collins class to 12 of the new bigger French Subs, which they went with because they wanted regional superiority over japan (Sub Briefs Channel has a really good run down of this). I can't remember off the top of my head Japans orders, but I'm sure it's a shot in the arm too. So I'd like to know, even if it was at the end of the video if much would change in 15 years or so. Even if it was a rough guess.

Australia almost bought the latest Japanese submarines, but went for the French design instead (due to lobbying). @ComaDave

I did all the sums a couple of weeks ago. For the same price as we're paying for these subs (AUD90 billion), we could have bought 3 Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, and a dozen off-the-shelf USN Virginia-class nukesubs...and have more than enough money left over to outfit everything, including F-35B's for the carriers. The question would be which is better suited for an Arctic role. The Canadian army is a lot bigger, but it wouldn't really be as big a factor in the conflict over the island. After WW2, Japan adopted the exclusively defense-oriented policy. Japan cannot declare war due to its own Article 9 of the Constitution. JSDF is not good at attacking. but as for defense, Japan has pretty decent forces. I think there is no country that can invade Japan other than USA.

Torpedoes, F-35s, long range anti-ship missiles. This is not "exclusively defense". Japan did after all convert her 4 "helicopter carriers" to be able to handle the F-35. This is political posturing.

@@mygoatisdead how can you defend without torpedoes and modern fighter jets? offensive weapons such as ICBM, SLBM, bombers and nukes are not for exclusively defense doctrine.

The Australian landscape would be its greatest defence asset. Even if an invader were permitted to land troops unimpeded, surviving in many parts of Australia is a difficult and costly exercise. Just the fuel to travel the vast distances between targets of interest would be a major logistical operation. I wonder if, in the face of a land invasion, Australia would dust of the Brisbane Line defence plan?

As an aussie, Australia’s entire military strategy is, hopefully if we do whatever the Americans want they will defend our country for us

Obviously you are either not an Aussie, or one one of the least informed.As a kiwi who regularly goes on defence forums online, id recommend you vist defencetalk.com at least, one of many that mentions just how massive the defence whitepaper spend Australia has done and is doing over the next ten years on all its forces,how it exceeds any regional power, and is ranked currently 12th in the world.

They are improving it, but I think the strategy is to basically make an attacker pay to much to make an attack worth while or bleed them and hold untill one of allies back us up. From what I understand we could hold for some time. Though I thought we had more Aircraft. I found that concern.

@@Hoot_hoot777 yes but that is the defence strategy of most countries. It is preferable to deter the enemy from ever attacking than to try to defeat them in battle.
