What’s known as nanobodies from the blood of camels are at the heart of a medical revolution. Due to their special properties, these nanobodies can be used in a variety of ways, whether in the fight against infectious diseases, in cancer therapy or in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
Small antibodies with a big impact: camel blood contains immunological superpowers. It all began in the 1990s with a chance discovery at the Free University of Brussels: students used dromedary blood in an experiment and came across previously unknown antibodies. The university scientists discovered that these antibodies are present in all camel species. And, they have amazing properties. Small fragments can separate from the base of the antibody -- without causing any damage and while retaining their full binding capacity.
This was the discovery of the nanobody: a tiny, extremely robust molecule which, due to its small size, can also penetrate areas too small to be targeted by complete antibodies. The nanobody, however, can attach itself with extremely high precision to pathogenic antigens.
This discovery triggered a wave of innovations and shook up the big pharmaceutical companies. In 2018, the first drug based on nanobodies went on the market, designed to combat an autoimmune blood clotting disorder. Numerous potential applications were developed within a very short space of time. Whether in the fight against cancer, in Alzheimer's diagnostics or to kill pathogenic bacteria - the success of camel antibodies has been so resounding that many medical research centers now have their own herds of llamas or alpacas.
But why do members of the camel family in particular have such immunological superpowers? With the help of camel experts and microbiologists, the documentary sheds light on the surprising abilities of camels and the medical revolution of nanobodies.

I have never seen a documentary more interesting than these King of Bio-Tech Camels! Such careful detail and explanations that a non-science and a non-medical person can comprehend proves that we could all learn if it is brought down to our level. And the sprinkling of entertainment throughout holds our attention. Thank you all for your appearances in this film and the production of it.

When I was growing up we were told that Camels have never been natural to North America. What a surprise it was to find out that this was actually the origin of all Camelids and that they simply disappeared from this continent long ago, as did horses and other mammals. I studied the origins of llamas when I first started breeding them in Canada about 25 or so years ago. I gave up the business in favor of human children eventually, but at the time it was pretty scary to import these llamas from South America, in particular Peru, to a completely different habitat. And it wasn't the cold that was the problem. Llamas naturally live in the mountainous areas where temperatures are cool year round, which is why they have so much wool. So Canada's winters were not a problem. It was the heat in the summer that was a problem. Many of us didn't even know how to shear a llama and the llama's didn't appreciate it either. So many of them went unshorn and that was bad. Plus, the llamas that were used for showing had to keep their coats on and clean and get bathed before a show and you would not believe how much work that was and how stressful it was on the llamas. They also had to have their toes clipped because they were not in their natural mountain habitat where they would get naturally worn to the right shape. Trimming llama toes is a horrible experience. They are not cooperative, stubborn and persistent. It was a big learning curve. Because it was normal to spend 10K on one llama at that time (we paid 20K for our stud), a baby llama was worth saving. But we didn't do all the right things sometimes and many breeders would end up with a very expensive baby who did not get the mother's first milk, the colostrum, and they would become sick and die. So, we'd have to take blood from either the mother or another llama, have it spun down into plasma at our vet clinic or the hospital, and the vet would inject it directly into the stomach of the baby in order to give it an immune system. All done within 24 hours. It was all very scary, and expensive. But today I learned about these nanobodies from this documentary and I knew nothing of this before. Nice!

@jayawilder3835 2 дня назад
This comment was so interesting, I stopped the video to read it. But why, please, were you importing the llamas into Canada in the first place, if it wasn't for wool or medicine? If it was so expensive to keep them, there must have been a really good reason?

Kind of like they grazed something other than grass or hay. I think they are eating some kind of desert herbs that give the milk a sage like taste. Not sure. I have seen them eat cactus on RU-vid, but there are no cactus here. I bet camel colostrum would be very potent.

You can't get a dose of camelid nanobodies from consuming camel meat or milk. The human body simply digests any nanobody proteins that a camelid-derived food might contain. The camelid nanobodies have to be carefully retrieved and refined from camelid blood and then concentrated to deliver an effective 'dose'. Hopefully, if camelid nanobodies live up to their potential they can eventually be synthesized or made by genetically engineered bacteria or yeasts and produced in bioreactors like many other pharmaceuticals.

Considering how viruses are generally smarter than bacteria in terms of drug resistance, how does nano bodies fare against viruses?
@robinkelly1770
@robinkelly1770 7 дней назад
It's not that they're smarter, more that viruses infect cells and so are not affected by antibiotics. Specific (and relatively new) anti virals have been developed. However the traditional method of defending against viruses are with immunisation. This includes triggering the body to develop nanobodies specific to certain viruses. It has been realised that nano bodies can be adopted to target all types of harmful disease including tumours but this work is very slow and in many cases person/tumour specific. In other words someone who has developed nano bodies against their own cancer probably cannot help another person with the identical cancer😢
@diolverbravo3723

I'm full of this blood benefits, and its not easy, it means I'm not much like others, I really do like to stand alone, be saddled on occasion, or be left alone to dehydrate and access deep back reserves.

If only humanity would eschew war for medical reasearch, environmental protection, conservation of resources, education, and the love of others, we might make it to the stars. I look around and feel we will never make it.....

It's mention in the Quran, the great creation of camels in The 17th verse of the Chapter Al-Gashiyah, which is "Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?", mentions an animal that has to be carefully examined and thought about: This is the 'camel'.
