Could THIS Be the Reason Your Sight-Reading Progress Is Slow? - Wish you could progress faster? Do you wish you had more motivation to practise? Does it take you forever to learn a piece?
In this video, I’m going to show why you might not be progressing as fast as you want and what you can do about it. You’ll see that it’s a lot simpler than you might think.

Once again, you continue to delight my eyes of understanding with the illumination of applications made simple. I really appreciate the illustration of Shakespeare and learning English in a simplified manner. It was excellent and on point! As always, I thank you so much for sharing!🙂💪🏿

Hi, have you talk about memorization topic? I found that if I learn a new pieces, then I will forget my previous pieces if I didn't keep practice it. Is that normal? I'm 45 years old.

I've mentioned memorisation in this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wZeLL7Cv4EE.html) but I haven't made one specifically on that. It could be that you aren't really memorising the pieces completely because if you were memorising properly, you should be able to remember most of it still. Maybe you are relying too much on muscle memory? The trick is to know the score mentally as well to the point where you could actually write it down, so that means knowing each note, every fingering, every marking, knowing the structure of the piece, how it sounds, how it feels, how it looks, etc. To really memorise a piece, you should be able to imagine yourself playing the piece mentally without even physically touching the piano. Athletes do this too when training. It's called visualisation or mental practice and it's almost as effective as real practice. It's difficult to do but it really pays off.

The secret to memorisation is to have advanced building blocks. Search videos about chess players getting tricked when asked to memorise a board. They don't remember 20 different positions. They summarise a board with 5-7 patterns. Pawns are countered by another pawn, they'll always face each others the same way in all instances. Put a pawn in a random positon on the board and the grand master won't be able to remember the board. Piano is the same. You memorise general patterns. There is the basic melody, the only unique part of a piece. Then you remember the variations of the theme, if a chord is used or not. You don't memorise the notes but the type of variation and the type of chord. In the end, just like a complex chess board can be remembered in 5-8 patterns, a full music score can also be remembered in 5-8 patterns. That's how you end up with pianist like the video game youtuber Lara that can remember several hundred music scores. She mostly "improvises" aka she generates the most likely variations and chords around the basic melody. So if you have trouble memorising, it's because you've not yet assimilated complex patterns into a building block. You achieve this either by intuition+lots of different pieces or by music theory giving you lists of standard patterns. And more realistically, you need both.

Thank you this video. There were a number of points made. What struck me the most is the idea that I should focus on pieces that I could potentially sight read at least slowly without too much difficulty

Great advice. I've been pushing myself to learn harder pieces with not-so-great results. Motivation has been a challenge. Will try to be patient and lower degree of difficulty before coming back and re-attempting the more difficult later on. Many thanks.
