In this video, we explore an innovative NIT model that maintains access for G5 programs to the CFP, but also allows other G5 champions to compete in the college football playoff system. The NIT model, inspired by the National Invitation Tournament in college basketball, proposes a new format for college football.
🏈 *What is the NIT Model?*
The NIT model introduces a secondary postseason tournament for college football teams (specifically G5 football programs) that narrowly miss out on the main playoff bracket. This system aims to provide more opportunities for deserving teams to compete and showcase their skills on a national stage.
📈 *How Does It Work?*
We break down the mechanics of the NIT model, including:
- Selection criteria for the teams
- Tournament structure and format
- Benefits for teams, fans, and the sport overall
🏆 *Benefits of the NIT Model*
The model could bring several advantages, such as:
- Increased competitiveness and excitement in G5 postseason play
- Greater exposure and experience for emerging G5 programs
- More games and revenue opportunities for schools and conferences
👥 *Join the Discussion!*
We want to hear from you! Do you think the NIT model could enhance the college football playoffs? What other changes would you like to see in the current system?

Cure bowl 2022 UTSA played Troy and it was a Champion vs Champion game ( Conference USA vs Sun Belt) and it was so poorly presented to the sports audience. I’d like a world where these types of games get a fair opportunity to be shown to larger audience. Perhaps a playoff is the platform to do that.

NIT Football Playoff would be way more popular , and more respectable than the NIT Basketball tournament . In Basketball it is almost a joke ,in football it would be a badge of honor and a great way for teams to build momentum into next season.

I'd rather just have an 16 team NIT tourney with each conference getting an automatic bid as well as 6 at large. The 4 G5 teams not selected to the playoff would host a home playoff game along with the highest ranked team not in the playoff. So using the CFP rankings, here's how it would have went down. SMU, Troy, Miami-OH and Boise St would have had home games being the G5 champs not in the playoff. Oklahoma, LSU and Louisville would get home games as the 3 highest teams not in the playoff (assuming there was a 12 team playoff last season). Games would be on campus at the highest seed. Only the title game would be on neutral site. K-State at SMU Tennessee at Oklahoma James Madison at Oklahoma St Tulane at LSU Iowa at Louisville NC State at Troy Oregon St at Boise St Notre Dame at Miami - OH

That Troy vs SMU matchup would be interesting. Both their fans would be wearing red but you could still tell who's who because of all the empty seats on SMU's side.

Troy is more burgundy than red. Plus SMU wears white and deep blue. But you are correct about the lack of fans which is another reason why they will fit right in with ACC play. Even when SMU has someone big time from an Autonomous Conference or College visiting Lake Highlands Dallas, their side of the football stadium is barren at times as visitors have way more fans. Heck there are certain FCS teams in Texas and Louisiana and Tennessee and other states that SMU will never host or play because those fans and supporters outnumber SMU by a mile and then 100 more miles. SFA, Lamar, UT-Chattanooga, McNeese St, and Dakota schools go without saying that they will have more fans at the game than SMU. One reason why schools like Texas and Houston and A&M will schedule a 3-1-1 football games arrangements with SFA and Lamar for example is because they bring fans which means money for the cities and colleges hosting SFA.

What would be the prize for participating in the NIT Football Tournament? It has to be a big payout especially not getting selected in the CFP Playoff. It would be interesting than a bowl game.
@CollegeUnderdogs

I guess it would depend on the interest it would garner and the revenue it could generate…but a big payment would be paramount

Add Texas Bowl to the host list. To be fair I don't see any G5 team winning the CFB it means upsetting 3 power4 teams in consrcutive weeks. It is better to just leave the CFP for this NIT Option.

IMHO, I know none of the Pac12 teams like going there, but El Paso (Sun Bowl) in one of the oldest traditional bowl sites. El Paso does a great job of host the teams. Main problem is it is a pain to get to El Paso cause it is out in the middle of nowhere West Texas. I enjoyed the Beavers playing there.

Like the idea. I think that you need to be careful how it is "branded". Perhaps, as a "challenge" rather than as a "playoff or championship".

This is what I would rather like to see regarding G-5 exposure. We know the top-ranked G-5 team is guaranteed a spot, Liberty last year, but what I would like to see is the non CFP Bowl games redistribute the “pecking order” of the other four G5 camps. They have a possible spot in the top bowl games against the next best CFP ranked teams. For example, last year SMU was 24 in the CFP and 22 in the AP, they play the 12th best team in the CFP rankings not in the playoff in the best non-CFP bowl game. Then Troy/JMU out of the Sunbelt play the next best CFP ranked team, and so on and so forth.

A fun way to do this would be to do 4 auto bids for the other G5 teams, then 4 at-large bids for G5 or P4 teams. I think this will lead to a fun G5 vs P4 dynamic. Instead of bowl games that just end the season after it is over, it gives another goal to work towards.

I like the idea but let’s be honest. The player opt out for this would be crazy high. If they’re opting out now, why would they opt in for let’s call it what it is, a loser’s bracket
@CollegeUnderdogs
@CollegeUnderdogs 3 месяца назад
Great point but I have two thoughts in response: 1. Opt outs will decrease as schools are able to pay players directly 2. Most opt outs are kids with very high draft stock, you don’t have as many of these at the G5 level
@BigCManMusic

I think this a great idea. There are a couple of concerns though: 1. While I don’t think the CFP would eliminate the G5 access to the playoff, I don’t know how much these teams would want to play a NIT-version of the old playoff model, now for only the 4 G5 teams that didn’t make the playoff. 2. Bowl games for G5 teams (and attendance in general) is already pretty bad, especially in conferences like the MAC or CUSA. Honestly I think it would be better if you rotated hosting rights to each conference and having them be home games and then be a neutral site for the championship game. 3. While I like the idea of the championship game being the weekend before the CFP Title game, I do think it should be at a venue close by to the venue. It takes a long time for grounds and stadium crews to replace turf, signage, amid other things. 4. I still believe that some teams may be disappointed to not make the playoff proper and the top players will still choose to opt out of these games, even if they had a big championship on the line

Oh hey thanks for showcasing my comment and idea! (This is DePaul in case you didn't recognize me through my new profile pic.) Honestly, that 4-team conference champ tourney idea was just my pipe dream, but hopefully with this video the idea can get out more. Also, for those curious, my comment past the "read more" said that these will be the 4 conference champs not in the CFP so in 2020 this would have included #25 Oregon alongside #22 San Jose St, UAB and Ball St.

@@CollegeUnderdogs you asked about why they played national championship game on Monday Night instead of Saturday Night. Remember that NFL regular season ends around the same time as college football game. They have two NFL games on Saturday for week 18. ESPN and ABC airing both games. Make sense for ESPN to have national championship game on Monday Night instead of trying to compete with NFL.
@CollegeUnderdogs

But when they developed the new format which made a longer season, I don’t believe there would be any conflicts on Saturday night (or anytime Saturday)

I still believe the P2 will sooner or later push the G5 completely out of the whatever playoff model they have. I think the B12 & ACC, if the ACC exists as well. The P2 will keep the none P2 included in MBB/WBB and other sports because that will benefit them.They use the G5 for things when it suits them, and only when it suits them. An example of this is the House Law Suit agreement, the leftover after the NCAA pays their portion goes 40% to the current & former P5 conferences, 60% to the G5 & FCS schools. Only the P5 conference had a vote/ input on how the payout would be split. The G5/FCS are willing to continue to take what ever crumbs that spill from the Autonomous table and do nothing about it. I am in favor of a complete split from them and if they want to schedule charge them double the price for the games. Have the schools that have those games scheduled split the income with their conference. Sorry for the rant, and I know this is coming from a fan of a team that has just been relegated. Saying that, I never did like the G5 schools were treated & looked down on before anyway. There, that is my 2 cents.
