Could You Daily A Caterham Seven 270S?

So having spent a weekend with the Caterham Seven 270S I thought I would pose, what at first seems a laughable question - can you daily a Caterham Seven 270S? It may seem like a bonkers concept, but I pondered the question as I took the car back to its home in Crawley.
Sure, the roof takes forever to put up, the boot is tiny and you'll need to avoid speed humps, but if you're willing to, you could make it work. Watch my thoughts in this video and if you happen to own a Caterham, let me know your views.

I've had two 7SVs since 2003, the latest one from 2005 to date (160,000 miles in total). Both have been my only transport and have been used for all purposes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Yes you can do a daily: it wakes you up and sets a good mood on the drive into work, and takes away all the stress accumulated during the working day on the homeward journey. There's enough room in the boot, behind the seats and with an E Bag on top of the boot for a fortnight's holiday for two people - and there's nothing better than a 7 for a holiday car! It's even fun in rain and absolutely hilarious on snow and ice - also as scary as hell!

I wouldn't quite fancy a Caterham in the height of a British winter, I'll say that for nothing 😂 Thanks for watching Anton!

It's strange how no one questions using a motorbike everyday. It's more "hardcore" than a Caterham. I wish more people would daily cars like this rather than big ugly, hateful SUVs. I'm going to daily a classic Elise once I sell my Toyota :D
@antonshott7691
@antonshott7691 4 года назад
@@BlatentlyFakeName I had a bike when I was much younger - a BSA Goldstar - great fun. Then I got my first Caterham. 7s, especially 7SVs, are just a trifle more practical than a big bike. Mind you, after my first 7, marriage, house buying and kids delayed the purchase of my second 7 for 33 years! 7s just ain't practical enough for a family...........

What about security leaving it in the street or public carparks?
@antonshott7691
@antonshott7691 4 года назад
@@willf.h6951 If you're talking about security regarding anything you leave in the car - there is none, so you take anything of value with you. As regards security of the car itself, mine has an immobiliser and a tracker and I can remove the steering wheel. Others have a battery isolator key. You can also use gearstick/handbrake/steering wheel locks (for those who don't have a removable steering wheel)

I have a Robin Hood Exmo (similar to lotus 7) that I built 22 years ago. For the summer months each of the first 8 years it was my daily driver. Job change forced it being relegated to hi-days & holidays. Yes in the wet it isn't the best to drive. But that's the joy of a 7. A powerful set of airhorns helps a lot more than people realise. I did look at making a fibreglass hard top, but I have little experience with making a section large enough. So I just stick to the folding vinyl roof.

First review even mentioning it even has storage space. It's funny how people dismiss it outright. Most people can fit their groceries on the passenger seat of any car. It's weather protected. So. Yeah. I did daily 50km total with my motorcycle for a while. Didn't hate it . Huge rucksack and tank rucksack being enough to go shopping. But that spoils the fun. You can fit in some big thing sideways in the caterham. On a motorcycle not without straps and acute worry. This is easier. ... Wonder if someone ever put a topcase on a roll cage version of it. I wish there were more cars simple like this. Would mean actual cheap 3-4l cars that still go 0-60under10would exist.

You certainly don't need to pay anything like £30k to get exactly the same pleasure from a seven as a modern new one. Buy one from the 90s for well under twenty grand and you'll never know the difference

The majority of people who drive Lamborghinis and Ferraris through London are tossers with too much money, not uncommonly ill-deserved or ill-gotten. Caterhams are driven by real-world down-to-earth enthusiasts, people you can have a beer with. Plus it's British and who doesn't like that. Nice impressions!

lotus4freaks It's not overly complicated, you just have to make sure you use the little fob thing to disable the immobilizer before you turn the ignition. Most of the time it works fine but it can be fiddly. Thanks for watching, I wish you a happy new year.

@1spongeygit
@1spongeygit 4 года назад
@@ReptilianAnusWizzard can't argue, guess it would be close! Everyone says about the 'raw driving experience' which is true but also slightly underplaying the 'real life' handling and actual speed these things can turn in and drive through a corner, with decent soft tyres they feel like they are on rails, you will back off before the car breaks away, it's not the raw power as such, it is the way it effortlessly gets you to the next corner, with the only limitation being your nerve... that is my experience of owning a mere 150bhp caterham for 3 years, maybe i am biased but i am looking for another one, i miss it so much! haha!

@@ReptilianAnusWizzard Mine is a 2003 140bhp K Series engined SV (the bigger, heavier 7). Checking the performance figures on Parkers etc for both the 370Z and the F10 535 the 7 is a few 10ths of a second quicker to 60. The narrow-bodied S3 Seven, being lighter, would be quicker, and with 10 more bhp quicker still. With the aerodynamics of a brick, top speed would be 125-130mph, slower then either the 535 or the 370Z, but for fuel consumption there would be no contest - mine manages around 40mpg (British Gallons) overall and 45-48 touring.
