I decided I finally needed to address the elephant-sized pile of scrap wood in my shop. I've needed a scrap wood cart for a long time and I took the time to design up a version that is, I think, a great compromise between size and capacity.
This project was pretty straightforward and would just for a great shop project that will both enhance some skills and add some much needed organization to your shop. In total this project requires 2-1/2 sheets of 3/4" plywood, a couple of 2x4's, and 6 casters.

I’ve had a cart like this for about 20 years. My suggestion if you are building this is to use larger casters. Yes, they might have the proper weight rating, but you need a larger diameter wheel so it doesn’t get hung up on debris on the floor.

Hey Travis, years ago I built a lumber cart using a full sheet of plywood meaning the cart is 8ft long. I also used a full sheet of plywood for both sides, the small stock bin side and the sheet good side. Let me just say that cart is HEAVY and HUGE! I totally agree, overkill and now it is loaded up and practically un-moveable! Definitely worth tearing down and redoing to something more along the lines of your cart!!! Great job and yes, for the most part, I measure for the screw placement, it just looks so much nicer and professional! 😁

Bought the plans a couple weeks ago and finished the build last night. Plans were easy to follow, I cut the dados on my table saw for the back panel. Plans were easy to follow, and the design worked out well. The cart holds a lot of lumber and cutoffs which is nice. Now I have one place where I can see what material I have on hand rather than having to look through the various piles that accumulated on the surfaces of my shop. My only change was not doing the dado on the very top edge of the back panel. I just screwed it in and called it good. In fact, one could probably skip the dados altogether and just hold up the horizontals with pocket holes from underneath. Those shelves won't hold a tremendous amount of weight. Those would probably be my only changes if I were to build again.

I recently found your channel and have been binge watching your videos. One thing I have noticed is that you frequently have to fix connections you have applied glue to. Love the channel. Not wood working related, but I recently discovered digital/app-based sprinkler controllers and replaced our old RainBird controller with a B-hive from Amazon. Super easy install and much easier to program and it can do things like cancel the scheduled watering if there's rain in the area since it knows the location. You could totally get rid of that big controller and get that space back if you want to. Nice job on the cart.

I built one similar but in 8ft long and once it was full of lumber 2 of the 6 casters failed and it would not roll. I unloaded it and replaced the garbage casters with 11 better ones and now it rolls fully loaded. If you are only using 6 casters just make sure they are heavy duty and can handle the weight.

Great cart. You did some nice design work on it. It will hold a boatload of assorted stuff, you may be swapping out those casters for larger diameter ones. As heavy as it is, a tiny little piece of scrap will stop you cold, but as you never have scraps on the floor, that point is moot. ;-). When I hand cut dovetails those little pieces seem to always land in front of a wheel, even if it's across the entire shop.

I purchased the plans several months ago and just now ha time to start the build. I read through the plans and have found the Cut Sheets 1-3 confusing. I suggest that you remove repetitive cuts, i.e. Base Panel, Back Panel, Front Skirt, Back Skirt etc. etc. from Cut Sheet 1,2&3 Once a cut is made it doesn’t need to appear on additional Cut Sheets. The Wood Storage Cart plans are excellent with the exception of my previous statements. My 2 cents

I love the video. But I built one of these for my third stall garage shop and I absolutely hated having it during the winter time. I didn't mind it during the warm months as I would just park my truck outside a lot of the time. During the winter though when I want both vehicles in the garage cause of snow or it just being crazy cold it made the third stall shrink by having it. I was always moving it around so I had more space. Again though I liked your video and love the channel. Just my experience with a lumber cart wasnt good. I started really planning out anything I wanted to build a lot more so I dont have much off cuts and for the off cuts I do get I just try and make small little things out of it to sell or give away right away.

Really enjoying your channel and overall approach to "making" and talking about your RU-vid side gig. I infer that you are a displaced Tennessee boy like myself. I tackled a very similar problem when I gave away a massive, far too large, way overbuilt storage cart I had built and worked around for years. But I refused to buy materials for the smaller cart - I insisted on building it purely from the scrap I had on hand, which was barely adequate. So I made a lot of compromises and accepted a "minimum viable product" outcome. It would never be acceptable for a RU-vid "maker" but for a wanna-be, it works. Maybe I'll accumulate enough scrap now to upgrade to something more like yours.

Nice cart, Travis! It coincidentally looks almost exactly like the one I built a couple of years ago. I skimped and used 1/2" ply which I instantly regretted. I also just used pocket holes to attach the shelves instead of dadoes. For the plywood side, I wound up adding two removable pieces of conduit that stick up in front of the cart so that I could sort through my sheets and get to the ones in the back without having to offload everything. Overall it has been holding up really well. Nice design, Travis!

Once upon a time (I'd say 60s and earlier, in the US anyway) it was uncommon to bathe daily. Washing/drying/styling hair - especially long hair - was more of an ordeal. Since hair was dirtier when washed, a double shampoo was often called for. But also yes, they sold more shampoo by insinuating you had filthy hair and should use double the product. Pro tip for everyone: buy a $3 plastic scalp brush for use while shampooing.
