The 60 series cruiser … The cockroach of the 4 wheel drive world I’ve had a few of them Not fast but will never let you down and go anywhere! Around $17,000 was brand new price in Australia in 1980’s But ours came with the 4 litre diesel … Not fast but touquey and last forever …
Pity you guys in the US did not have the best of 60-series land cruisers.. You only saw the cheapest, petrol-only versions, whereas in the JDM and some other markets, they came with TURBO diesel, both front and rear cable lockers, PTO winch, plastic fenders which make wonders for the looks, 3rd row seat (most americans don't even know there was a 3rd row available), rear A/C and cooling box, suspended seats with shock absorber and weight setup and heated and lumbar and 3-point seatbelts on the back and so much more.. This was a fantastic car.
FF rear axle as well. You make a fair point, although many think the 60 series is great because of how simple and utilitarian it is and prices reflect that out here. Plenty of JDM spec 60s rolling around but they don’t bring that much more money if any
That is a really nice vintage Land Cruiser 60. We had a 94 Land Cruiser 80 with 160k miles and gave it to my stepson and his wife. It has the cloth interior so it is still like new inside. They really like it.
I'm really surprised that Comanche didn't sell. In my part of the Country (Minnesota), Comanches are super hard to find, especially with 4X4 and not super rusty. And when you do find a clean, 4X4 Comanche with the 6 cylinder, they go for big money (around $8,000 or more). I wouldn't have done the interior swap to that one though. I had a 1994 XJ with the 6 cylinder (those are still cheap here), and that was a great vehicle for me.
@@1REspawnPLS I,m surprised that in the safety conscious USA they allow tires to stick out beyond the fenders, in England and probably most of Europe that Comanche would not be road legal and the driver would be prosecuted.
Haven't been in Jeeps in years, but that old YJ was double what I thought. The Comanche was/is super rare anywhere, but sounds like this one was needing a donor/spare to get fixed up. A thin market and with the Jeep brand sinking a hard bet, unless its your personal dream. I have a WD21 and last saw these still super cheap (
That Land Cruiser is beautiful. The 60 to 80 Series Land Cruisers are the best looking of them all. There's an abandoned LC80 near where I live and I've always wanted to pick it up and restore it. I however haven't got the funds for it
That Jeep 4.0L is just the 2.5L with two extra cylinders. AMC always made solid engines. And they were always paired with quality automatic gearboxes from either Borg-Warner or Chrysler (yes, at one time, Mopar made the best automatics in the business).
Wow !! Looks like Landcruiser still commanding high prices no matter which country. Second hand prices here in Australia are crazy. 60 series are a good classic rig, but the 80 and 100 series are so much more comfortable as an everyday drive and far more capable off-road as well. I had a 60 and the leaf springs all round meant it was like riding in an old truck. Off -road it had limited wheel travel and used to get hung up on the leaf springs a lot. I now have a 105 series and it's better in every way.
I really like this series. Every vehicle brings back great memories. My Dad had a red FJ60 with the same brown interior when I was a kid. It was cool but slow. He traded it for a a 5.7 IROC-Z
I own a 60 series with the 12HT engine. I love it. I think your description of this classic 4WD was very accurate. It made me feel good just watching it. I have just taken my 60 on a month long expedition down some of the roughest roads in Australia and it did well.
Post Script for the Wrangler. The room in that engine bay is begging for a V8 swap and back in the day gas pumps had an extra 4 to 6 feet of hose, it didn't matter which side you pulled up on.
FJ-60 for sure but sustaining 70 MPH is asking a lot from its I-6 4speed combo, and once you get there it's certainly not happy. Mine was really comfortable at 55-60 which in modern day traffic relegates you to the right lane. It could also smell a grade a mile ahead, at which point you plant your right foot all the way to the floor and leave it there until you reach the summit while every semi-truck passes you. Rating: Cool factor 100%, Drivability, good as long as you stay on rural roads or surface streets around town. Off Road ability, as good as it gets for overlanding and moderate trails. Fuel economy don't ask. Cost of ownership? It's a 30 + year old vehicle but not bad once baselined and you are handy with a wrench. Oh, and if you live in a State that requires emissions testing, swap an LS into it or move. Thats why I sold mine.
Had this exact same year/model land cruiser. Same color same everything. By far my favorite suv I’ve ever owned. It was a beast off-road. Loved the 4 speed coupled with the t-case, would go anywhere. Got rid of it with almost 300k miles.
I grew up in an identical '83 60 series owned by my grandfather. Learned to drive a manual and wheel in that beast. Rust finally killed it in the early '00's. Both are now gone, but certainly not forgotten. Running an '01 100 series these days.
Being a dealer's auction, I would expect lower prices. The dealers need to leave room for essential repairs, maintenance, and some profit. I'd say both of you were estimating retail prices that the dealers would charge rather than their bid pricing.
I have an 85 cruiser and the rear window issue was because someone didn't close the tailgate properly. You have close the tailgate like you're mad at it, otherwise the window section won't close properly and you have to jerk it open.
I've never been a fan of buying modified vehicles at auctions because you can never know if and how well the mods were done I've actually seen a Chevy Sonoma with drywall screws in it
My grandpa had a Comanche when I was a kid. The engine caught on fire when he was driving it down the road one day. This would have been in 98 or 99 and it was pretty old by then.
I had a 91 yj and absolutely love the square headlights. It's got an interesting story and it's just unique. You see the square headlights and you instantly know what it is. And it brings a year to my eye to see the prices. I bought my 91 in 2000 that was almost mint, garage kept, owned by a doctor with only 91k on it for $5,400.
Thank you, Tommy and Brendon. Loved 80's off-roaders from Japan, Land Cruiser/4Runner, Montero, Trooper/Rodeo, and the oddball's Sidekick/Samurai), and Daihatsu Rocky. IMHO sadly Jeep brand has gone the way of Sears
Vehicle's started to get HP choked off In the mid '70's. I had a square headlight Wrangler in the early '90's . Loved it. Would love to find a good one now,or a Comanche as a project.
Please throw in a cursory original mpg for these videos. I know it doesn't mean much but I'm always interested and the difference. And I don't believe you ever actually said the torque number for each. It would be interesting to know those differences to
When I was a kid, my stepdad had a white 87 Comanche. Or at least I think it was an 87. It had the 2.5L and 5-speed. You don’t see a lot of 4x4 Comanches with that powertrain. It was a really cool truck, good on gas, but unfortunately, he sold it. We only had it about three years. It had been rebuilt by a mechanic who ran a local auto salvage yard. My stepdad traded my mom’s 91 Accord for it.
I had an 87 Wrangler and loved it! Everyone who complains about square headlights needs to get over it. They drove better than the current Jeeps and had more room.
All of these were very cool trucks - but I just can't get my ahead around that Land Cruiser for $20k at a wholesale auction. I thought the best buy was the little 4 cylinder Wrangler myself!
Informative and interesting as always. My only guess that was close was $3,000 on the Wrangler, after that I don't follow enough old trucks and you guys really know your territory. Then I had a squirrel moment. The white sedan parked in the background, a 2000 to 2004 Subaru Outback, I could not see the badging but I remember that It was the most expensive thing in the line up whenI started selling Subarus when it came with the 3.0l 6 cylinder and the VDC traction package. $42,000 CDN in 2001, plus freight, tax etc. The same price as the cheapest Jag back then, a 2.5l V6, 5spd manual X-Type. Like I said, look , squirrel!
The king of the 60series is still the HJ61 and HJ62 with a 12HT turbo diesel 6. I think north America missed out on that varient? But the petrol 2F FJ is worth half of what a good 2H or even better a 12HT HJ is worth here in Australia.
I have a 1985 Fj60 Land Cruiser tatooed on my left forearm, why? I've owned several, the last one I bought with 458.000kms and when I sold it it was at 1.3+ million kms, still on the stock 3F engine and 5 speed gearbox with basic to intermediate maintainance done to it. It is the best SUV ever made. Super comfortable, extremely reliable and good looking even after more than three decades.
The reason the yj had so much room under the hood ,is because the fan shroud was missing, there would be no room between engine and radiator,I still enjoyed the vidio ,liked the older vehicles.
Either side of the fuel pump, for refueling, is a go. With the fuel filler there, on the back, you can pull up on either side of the fuel pump, and the fuel nozzle will easily reach.
You should buy! and you should buy as fast as you can because all our off-roadies will skyrocket in prices including 90 and 2000 years Landcruisers and Lexus GX AND LX !!
As always agree more w/Brendan. I guess bc he's just cooler 😂. The Comanche is a cool truck! & they fetch big $, like many fugly rusted out 280 SL MB's that do not run. Just bc of What they are, ppl will buy them. Bc they will rise in value(ppl Thought I was CRAZY in 04 when I wanted to buy one. In decent shape. For ONLY $6100! I told them it would rise in value soon! & today can hardly buy a severely broken one for less than 25k-MB 280SL)Wranglers are a dime a dozen. Like a Ford Crown Vic "Limited" 😂 yeah limited to a BAZILLION. And ofc the coolest Land Cruiser the FJ60. Definitely not fast, but super cool! BIG, BLOCKY IN CHARGE, GO ANYWHERE! OFC it started at ONLY 213K! Those go to EASILY Half a Million miles if not more!! I ❤❤❤Ya Big guy! You're so Cool! & Mister T well, it's nice to see Sofyan has had a twinge of styling influence on you. 😂 Not surprised it didn't sell in cowboy land. Take back to SoCal, it WILL despite fuel being twice❤
Would love to see jeep make a modern version of this. Wrangler has its truck version which is the gladiator and Cherokee should have its truck version. Great video guys as always.
ORACLE Lighting LED Tail Lights for 1986-1992 Jeep Comanche MJ (Tinted Lens) Amazon $268 The bumper is $190. Apparently the aftermarket saw this video and jumped on it.
The YJ could be better with the 2.5L because the I6s could be TOO torquey. They had enough torque to bury the YJ in a snowdrift. The MPI 2.5L still bogged with 30" mudders churning through heavy snowdrifts in 4High. Then one could shift into 4Low and reverse out for another go. ÇJ7s were offered with anti-sway bars...in the front only. YJs too. YJs got track bars though, even though they were often deleted by offroaders. The YJs were advanced enough, but still simple and affordable. VERY moddable. The suspension could ride MUCH better with aftermarket upgrades and greasable bushings. The 4.2L didn't really need more HP, IMO. It had great torque from down low. Mopar offered an MPI kit for it eventually and it was fine. YJs with back seats also had rear seatbelts. They just had lapbelts until the newer sportbar debuted. Jeep REALLY should have offered a YJ Scrambler with a tailgate. A swingate kills utility. I had an absolute blast with my affordable YJ. It was my daily. It was my offroader. It was my continental overland explorer. It was my mini-pickup. I hauled with it. I towed with it. I wrenched on it.
I hated to work on the 60 series LC, engine rear main seal, fan belts, exhaust manifold, carburetor with thousand of vacuum hoses, 25mph going up to big bear mountain California 😢
Yous guyses love these 4x4s, judging by the values you place. The wrangler is valued more than a Corvette of the same year and condition, wow. I would think $1800-2400 tops. You are over double that. This is the commonest garbage grade of Jeep. Still a lot more to love than a new one for that price. That Comanche is very rare, and was a 4x4 truck. I guess no market, and needs rare parts? Sure its worth little, but more rare than even a Subaru Brat. $3-4k. Since the Jeep brand has been sinking, its hard to bet on these, especially with them both relatively rough. Land Cruisers that old weren't sold in volume, Toyota was a beater then. Really rare "premium" vehicle, with a stick? $8-15k as a recognizable collector's car. Wow I was low on the LC.. we should've bought these back when they were 4-6k. (unlike corvettes and such which were never cheap)
Pretty soon these will become unobtanium also. Buy one now for a fun project vehicle. I really like the utilitarian look and simple functionality of these vehicles. No glitz, tech, or overly luxurious. They’re easy for diy repairs.
