This show had some great music - wish they'd release a soundtrack album! Christopher Cerf wrote this one along with some others like "Less Than Zero", "Eight Percent of My Love", and "Angle Dance" - he's also known for his work on Sesame Street and Between the Lions.
I love the fact that this was the artist, Count On It, singing "Count On It," from the album Count On It. Trippy. Probably produced by Count On It from Count On It records.
This was an absolute FAVORITE show of mine as a child and to hear this brings back so many wonderful memories. My favorite show was Mathnet, I remember it came on, if my memory is right, on Fridays, it was always something I look forward too and even some of the songs, have stuck with me and have helped me with math
Although PBS's weekday morning kid show lineup now only consists of shows that were made in the 2000s and beyond and they never kept any of their shows from the 20th century except Sesame Street, I wish they would bring back this show and the Electric Company as well, except that they should bring the latter show back to its original format from the 70s. Larry Cedar sure can be talented and energetic sometimes when he's singing, as seen in this song.
the year was 1989 , I was 8-9 and I had just gotten a new Nintendo. This was the only show i'd turn it off for. I hated math, have dyscalculia, but they still managed to make math fun and exciting! They did a phenomenal job on this show!
I remember an interview (or an answer to someone's fan letter or something like that!) where Cris admitted that he tried to put dibs on the drums because that way he'd get to sit down. ;)
One of my favorite music videos with a fun catchy math song from Square One Tv. I love it. Larry Cedars songs were always the best on this show. I’ve seen this music video quite a few times on the show. Interesting but unusual how the musical groups name starring lead singer Larry Cedar plus on 4 different saxophones Cynthia Darlo, Beverly Mickens, Chris Franco, and the late great Reg E Cathy is called “count on it,” the title of the song is “count on it,” and it’s from the album “count on it.” Thanks for sharing this video. Very educational for anyone wanting to learn math too of course coupled with fun music.
Besides Square one, I also remember seeing Larry Cedar in an episode of who's the boss where tony decides to attend an advertising class that Angela is teaching. I also remember seeing Mr. Cedar in a commercial for Taboo, the board game, which aired, I think sometime during the early or mid 90s.

It's actually even rare to see artists actually singing and not just pre-recording and lip syncing these days. One piece of props to give PBS in the late 80's and early 90's: they were genuine.
For the longest time, I was wondering if this song was supposed to be a parody of any existing song that was big at the time; the only ones I can think of is a cross between Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" and George Harrison's "I got my mind set on you"; and maybe some other ones
Visually, I thought it was a takeoff on Billy Ocean's "When The Going Gets Tough..." video with its many saxes and the comedic background singers dressed in white.
yea math works for some people not myself but after this anyone can be tempted to like math kids just fall to the jazzy tune and great message it works
Well here's something for all of you: Reg. E. Cathy went on to do Movies and Television Appearances. He did The Mask Starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz and th remake of the 70's Classic S.W.A.T. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrel, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J and Oliver Martinez. Reg. played the Lt. who is also one of Hondo's Close Friends.
I like this video, and I never thought that they weren't moving their fingers, and plus, I knew that Reg E. Cathy NEVER played a Saxophone, and that is also a Bass Saxophone. I thought that Cynthia does play the Saxophone in real life, if she did, then I would've saw her and Luisla play the Saxophones, I mean they would've also been better @ playing the Bass Saxophone, too, Thanks for the Video, it brings back so many memories, and yes, Suqare One IS my favorite Math Show.
From left to right, those saxophone players are Cynthia Darlow, Beverly Mickins, Cristobal Franco and Reg E. Cathey. Now, I think Cynthia is playing a tenor sax, and Cristobal, a baritone sax. Not to sure as to what Beverly and Reg E. are playing, though.
Cris Franco was on the Baritone Saxophone and Reg E. Cathey was on the Bass Saxophone I don't think that they were actually playing it or faking it Of course, Cynthia Darlow has played Saxophone so many times on Round it Off, Burger Patterns and Perfect Squares
Is it just me or does it seem like Cynthia plays the sax in a lot of videos. This one, Round it Off, Burger Pattern, and Square Numbers come to mind. Also, Cris seems to be on the drums a lot.
Amy Kay I'd bet the shot in front of a green screen. he did the pirouette, and they panned the camera up and down to take him out of and into the frame. or, they used digital effects to accomplish it.
@twiztedirish1978 Darn good idea, because, otherwise, then they wouldn't have all this legal red tape over copyright issues. I still don't mind watching this on RU-vid, though. (Seeing this on DVD would be twice as nice, in fact, AWESOME) ;-)

how about telling sesame workshop that you want to see square one released on dvd instead of whining that it isn't on dvd,go to .sesame workshop and tell them that you want to see square one tv released on dvd.
Personally, I would've LOVED to see Cynthia, Luisla, Beverly and Priscilla Lopez play the Saxophones Cynthia playing the Tenor, Beverly the Alto, Luisla the Baritone and Priscilla the Bass Saxophone But if you guys have anymore ideas, please let me know.
