I’ve not listened to a lot of live albums in general, so this 2 part series was fun. Your music knowledge never ceases to amaze me. The only one on the list I’ve listened to was Nirvana, which I do love. Now I have new material on my listen list. I think I’ll start with LED Zeppelin! Thanks Paul!
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard are my favorite live band going right now. Check out their Bonnaroo, Red Rocks and Chicago albums. Pure energy. Some of my all time faves that may end up on your 1-10 list. Frampton Comes Alive, Stevie Ray Vaughn Montreux Jazz Fest, Song Remains The Same, Floyd Live at Pompeii (though only film) Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. Live Dead. Phish A Live One Allman Bros Fillmore East. I could go on and on!
Love me some King Gizz! Amazing live band for sure. Still working on my 1-10 video but it's safe to say that at least one of the albums you listed will be on it :-) Thanks for watching!
Nice 20 - 11 collection you have picked out. As a teen I was in Georgia the night Skinner did these live performance. I was close to the city so I regret not making an effort to see one of these shows. My Morning Jacket is on my music radar. Their last two studio albums were my dive into their music but I have not check out their live performances. Very funny that Sha na na played early 1950s rock and roll on the same bill of counterculture artist in front of audience who needed to be informed of the bad acid out there. ha ha Glad to see a more recent band Oasis on the list. I love this band, I just wish the brothers would get along. I would add Elton John's 11-17-70 which is a live radio broadcast but they did have a small audience. This is before Elton became the mega star. A three man band who were just hammering it down. Live Bullet came out at a good time for Bob. He was transforming from a reginal star to a mega star with the release of Night Moves. Live Bullet was getting radio play and selling quite well prior to Night Moves. Lastly back in the 70s live albums were the norms for bands that reach platinum or RIAA statue. This was a way for the record company to make some extra money for bands that were on a hot streak and the bands or artist benefited as well because that brought them closer to fulfilling contract obligations with their record company. While many of these albums are forgettable some really remarkable ones also came out from this system. Good video, I look forward to you next top ten. Take Care Lawrence ,
Hey Lawrence, great comments! Thanks for watching. You definitely should listen to the Jacket live album. They're truly exceptional as a live band. I've been obsessed with Oasis since they came out. I don't rule out a reunion at some point but it's unlikely as long as their solo careers keep doing so well. Eventually someone's going to offer them too much money and I think they'll bite. It's funny that you mention the Elton album, I actually had it on my list but it got squeezed out. It's an amazing live record for sure. That early Elton period 70s stuff still blows me away. I remember Seger blowing up with Night Moves. Still have my original MOFI vinyl version of that album, it's such a classic. Thanks again!
When it comes to live albums the dinosaurs still reign supreme. There have been a few good live albums from alt era bands but they really can’t hold a candle to the classic rock bands. I’ll try to go from least to best for me. 20. MC5 - Kick Out the Jams 19. Hawkwind - Space Ritual 18. Kiss - Alive 17. Van Morrison - It’s Too Late to Stop Now 16. Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out 15. Humble Pie - Rockin the Fillmore 14. Wings - Wings Over America 13. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison 12. Genesis - Live 11. The Band - The Last Waltz There’s my first least. It’s hard to put them in order as even these albums are more than fantastic. To be continued….
