Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Heather Small joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
Following Countdown's 40th birthday, the show now looks to its next Champion Of Champions series - which will crown the ultimate winner from the past few years.

BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Also delighted to beat the contestants and Rachel within the 30s with: 6*8=48 48-10-5=33 33*25=825 825+1=826

i look forward to see a contestant say "incorrect" for the conundrum and cheer up when they see the word appear.

How they are able to concentrate writing down their answers with that music playing is beyond me, kudos to them!

826: No solution possible from factoring, but I found two solutions by 826 = 825 + 1 6 * 8 = 48 48 - 10 - 5 = 33 25 * 33 = 825 825 + 1 = 826 8 + 6 = 14 14 * 10 = 140 140 + 25 = 165 165 * 5 = 825 825 + 1 = 826

I found a different solution for the second one because like the boys, I did not realise it was divisible by 7: 25-2=23 23*7=161 161-7=154 154*3=462

Within the 30s I was delighted to get 7*5=35 35-9=26 26*75-1950 1950-2=1948 1948/2=974

8*6 = 48 10 + 5 = 15 48 - 15 = 33 33 * 25 = 825 + 1 = 826 Take THAT Rachel Riley!!

974: Similar thought process as both contestants (974 = 13*75 - 1), but as that was not directly possible, I found a solution by reaching double the target and then divide it by 2: (26*75 - 2)/2 7 * 5 = 35 35 - 9 = 26 26 * 75 = 1950 1950 - 2 = 1948 1948 / 2 = 974 I also spotted another solution by using 974 = 89 * 11 - 5 7 * 2 = 14 75 + 14 = 89 9 + 2 = 11 89 * 11 = 979 979 - 5 = 974

Do you find those within the 30 seconds?
@medusa_404
@medusa_404 Год назад
@@JimmyBoosterCrate Depends. Usually find 1 or 2 solutions within the 30 seconds, then I take some time to think of other possibilities. For this one, I'm pretty sure I thought of the first one within the 30s, but the second one took me much longer than that

462: 462 is divisible by 11, so I found these factoring solutions: 25 - 3 = 22 7 * 2 = 14 14 + 7 = 21 22 * 21 = 462 7 + 2 = 9 25 - 9 = 16 50 + 16 = 66 66 * 7 = 462 25 * 3 = 75 75 + 50 + 7 = 132 132 * 7 = 924 924 / 2 = 462

608: Very easy one by factoring (608 = 8 * 76) 75 + 1 = 76 76 * 8 = 608 I also found two solutions by 600 + 8: 100 - 75 = 25 25 - 1 = 24 24 / 2 = 12 12 * 50 = 600 600 + 8 = 608 100 - 75 = 25 50 / 2 = 25 25 - 1 = 24 24 * 25 = 600 600 + 8 = 608

The third numbers game was a bugger to solve in my head as I knew it was divisible by 14 so I wanted to find 59x14 or 118x7 and then soon as Rachel said 165*5)+1 I kicked myself

How the hell do these people know what 76 x 8 is, I would have never got that!
@katyevans7454
@katyevans7454 Год назад
:-) they know that 75x8 is 600 because they use that 75 a lot (and probably know 3/4 of 100 and 3/4 of 800 or whatever). And then they know they need 8 more and since (75x8)+8 is the same as (75+1)x8, (distributive law 😊) that’s how they figure it out.

In the first round, I saw Rachel's solution and had these two others: 7 x 5 = 35 35 - 9 = 26 75 x 26 = 1950 1950 - 2 = 1948 1948 / 2 = 974 7 x 2 = 14 75 + 14 = 89 9 + 2 = 11 89 x 11 = 979 979 - 5 = 974 In the second round, I saw Rachel's solution, and also had these ones: 50 - 7 = 43 7 + 2 = 9 43 x 9 = 387 25 x 3 = 75 387 + 75 = 462 25 - 2 = 23 23 x 7 = 161 161 - 7 = 154 154 x 3 = 462 In the third round, I saw Rachel's solution and also had this one that I expected her to get first: 8 x 6 = 48 48 - 10 - 5 = 33 33 x 25 = 825 825 + 1 = 826 As well as this one: 8 x 5 = 40 40 - 6 = 34 25 - 1 = 24 34 x 24 = 816 816 + 10 = 826 In the fourth round, I could only come up with one meaningfully different solution, based on the fact that 25 x 25 = 625. Otherwise, everything I spotted was just a variant of (75 + 1) x 8 = 608. 50 / 2 = 25 100 - 75 = 25 25 - 1 = 24 25 x 24 = 600 600 + 8 = 608
