Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Mark Watson joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
#Channel4 #Countdown
BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

For those of you who keep mentioning "I wish we had this show in the US"... have a look here at the unaired pilot (it's not like they didn't try)... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b7s4PNVjbWg.htmlsi=6n1Rofiqu1O98dQK

They added a monetary prize, which is necessary in America due to geographical constraints, but they eliminated the numbers rounds, which is basically a show just for anagrams. They could do the normal version in America, but it would either have to be localized like a PBS type show, and then have a national competition version, or keep the monetary incentive, so that players who have to appear on multiple days have an incentive to come back. Britain is small enough that players can easily make multiple appearances.

I liked it. If it went to air, they probably would have slashed the bonuses (say, $5,000 for the Conundrum bonus and $10,000 for the 9-letter word) and avoided using the words in the sentence to save a few seconds. I do like the concept of showing what the best word that you can come up with, like the "compete" one.

@@litigioussociety4249 On the British Version they film several shows in a single day, I think RR said it was a full week, 5 shows, per day, I'm not sure about all American shows but I think on Jeopardy Trebek would do an entire month in a week or two, and have several weeks totally off each month. I think Ken is still living in Washington State or where ever he is and he comes in for a week every month as well. I remember also that some would say as a plug at the end of the show that the contestants stayed at such and such a hotel. The sad fact is that most shows don't make the ocean crossing very well. Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf and I kind of prefer the US version of Life on Mars but there was a lot of BS about that one... seriously the Brits end and then Ashes to Ashes... I prefer The US ending, more about where the mind can take you than the final destination. The one that has always gotten me laughing is Friends, it was the biggest mega hit ever by the mid 90's. So the Brits bought the format and made Coupling. Which turned out to be a hit in it's own right but then NBC decided since the Friends kept asking for more money each year they might as well shut it down and start up a new series ... called COUPLING!!!!!!!! The jokes were slightly Americanized versions of British jokes and the shows flopped almost instantly.

128 - Rachel's solution requires a lot of time; you first have to realise that you cannot get to 128 directly, so you aim for 78 or 178, meaning you have to do three times the calculations. I went with Rachel's other preferred method: going way up: 50 x 10 is 500, divided by 4 is 125, plus 9 and minus 6.

I was surprised that both players were so far from the target for the first round, with 368 as the target. I don't practise number rounds much, but found 370 very quickly: 3 + 1 = 4. 4 x 100 = 400. 6 x 5 =30. 400 - 30 = 370. Well done Laura on a close victory.

I: Took 32-33, but an alternate route: 368 is 320+48 or 46X8 6+3 for 9 9X5 for 45 Add the 1, multiply the sum by 8. II: Mismathed, got a 126 and 127 (and another 129) after I saw the solution. And an eon later, I got another solution for 128: 50+9+5 gets the 64 we probably were looking at. 6-4 gets the 2 to multiply it. III: That should be an easy one, and the contestants concurred. IV: Another simple one.

For the first one I noticed the 1 and 3 and saw 369-1=368 123x3=369 100+23=123 So I tried to make 23 out of the 5, 6 and 8 but got 22 ((5x6)-8), so I added the 1 for 23 (100+23)x3=369 Than after a while I tried ax4 since 368 is a multiple of 4 (92x4) and 100-8=92 5-1=4 or 3+1=4 When they said 360 I was like O_O

360??? Yikes! I missed it, but, 6x5=30-8=22+100=122x3=366+1=367 (or add the 1 for 123 before x3 to get 369 and miss 1 high). I had a feeling going down from 400 was the way to do it, but tried going up first and never got to the 400 minus something method on the clock.

In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, of course, but I also had this solution to use all the numbers: 3 - 1 = 2 100 x 2 = 200 200 / 5 = 40 40 + 6 = 46 46 x 8 = 368 And this one, a solution along the same lines, for something fancy: 100 x 6 x 3 = 1800 1800 / 5 = 360 360 + 8 = 368 368 x 1 = 368 Just to use all the numbers again. In the second numbers round, I again saw Rachel's solution, but I first solved it as a "five-small", my usual habit with low-target, one-large games: 10 + 6 = 16 9 + 4 = 13 13 - 5 = 8 16 x 8 = 128 And using the 50 I had these solutions: 10 / 5 = 2 9 x 2 = 18 50 - 18 = 32 32 x 4 = 128 50 x 10 = 500 500 / 4 = 125 9 - 6 = 3 125 + 3 = 128 In the third numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution and also had these: 100 - 6 = 94 8 + 5 = 13 13 - 3 = 10 94 x 10 = 940 940 - 2 = 938 100 x 3 = 300 300 / 2 = 150 150 + 5 = 155 155 x 6 = 930 930 + 8 = 938 100 x 6 = 600 600 / 5 = 120 120 - 3 = 117 117 x 8 = 936 936 + 2 = 938 In the final round, I saw Barry's solution as well as: 75 - 3 = 72 72 x 8 = 576 9 - 6 = 3 576 - 3 = 573 8 - 6 = 2 9 x 2 = 18 75 - 18 = 57 57 x 10 = 570 570 + 3 = 573 And I also had this related "five-small" solution: 8 x 6 = 48 48 + 9 = 57 57 x 10 = 570 570 + 3 = 573 Interesting that the conundrum wouldn't be allowed under _Countdown_ letters round rules because it doesn't have the minimum three vowels.
