Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Richard Coles joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
#Channel4 #Countdown
BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

I got that as soon as I saw the thumbnail, never mind the video, and I don't consider that a brag. It's only easy if you see it and we obviously aren't dealing with the pressure of actually being there in the Countdown studio, so I'm trying to not be too harsh, but they must have been kicking themselves over that.

For the first round, I got Liz's solution at the first trial, and also got these: 3 x 8 = 24 100 - 9 - 24 = 67 67 x 2 = 134 9 x 8 x 2 = 144 144 - 10 = 134 For the second round, I was expecting Rachel to have this: 10 - 9 = 1 3 - 1 = 2 2 x 50 = 100 100 x 7 = 700 700 - 8 = 692 For the third round, since 682 = 31 x 11 x 2, so a couple of factoring solutions can be found: 25 + 6 = 31 4 + 4 + 3 = 11 31 x 11 = 341 341 x 2 = 682 25 + 6 = 31 4 x 4 = 16 3 x 2 = 6 16 + 6 = 22 31 x 22 = 682 For the last round, a similar way to Andy's solution, and a couple of variations: 6 x 3 = 18 75 + 18 + 6 + 1 = 100 6 x 3 = 18 18 + 6 + 1 = 25 75 - 25 = 50 50 x 2 = 100 6 x 3 = 18 18 + 2 = 20 6 - 1 = 5 20 x 5 = 100

It is surprising Rachel did not notice 682 = 62 x 11 since she invariably points out that if the outer digits add up to the middle one, it is divisible by 11. From there the solution is very easy but instead she went, in her own words, round the houses.
@richardchristie3203

Nice tip about the outer numbers, I eventually saw the 62x11 after a wee pause and expected Rachael to do it the same way.
@thomaspickin9376
@thomaspickin9376 8 месяцев назад
@@richardchristie3203 The division trick is actually if the alternating sum is divisible by 11 then the number is. For 682 we have 6-8+2=0 which is divisible by 11. If we look at 704 is 7-0+4 = 11 so is again divisible by 11, but the outer numbers way doesn't work there (unless you do it 11 mod 11 = 0 mod 11 ).

First time I've ever beaten the contestants at numbers! :D (Very aware they have the added pressure of being on camera in a studio, so this still wasn't as good as they do) First one was easy, 3x10, 8/2, add them and the 100. Second took a couple of seconds, 7-3 = 4 4+10 = 14 14 * 50 = 700 700 - 8 = 692 Third one I didn't get the total, but was closer than them: 6x4 = 24 24 + 3 = 27 27 x 25 = 675 675 + 4 + 2 = 681 fourth, I wonder if Rachel and Colin laughing heaped extra pressure on them, I took a few seconds to get 6 x 3 = 18 18 + 6 + 1 = 25 25 + 75 = 100 and a couple more seconds to get 6 + 6 = 12 12 x 2 = 24 24 + 1 = 25 etc

Well, this now has become an easy problem! I spent so much time trying to figure a solution with 682 in the last round that the factorization is already in my head! 25 + 6 = 31 4 + 4 + 3 = 11 31 x 11 x 2 = 682 25 + 6 = 31 4 x 4 = 16 3 x 2 = 6 16 + 6 = 22 31 x 22 = 682 25 + 4 + 2 = 31 6 x 3 = 18 18 + 4 = 22 31 x 22 = 682 If only they had gone four-large on this round, which would have guaranteed that 100 would be on the board. That would have been amusing. That has happened on _Catsdown_ , however, and I also think it did happen once before on regular _Countdown_ . I saw Rachel's solution and also had these alternatives: 6 + 2 = 8 75 x 8 = 600 600 / 6 = 100 6 x 3 = 18 75 + 18 + 6 + 1 = 100 6 - 2 = 4 6 x 4 = 24 75 + 24 + 1 = 100 6 - 1 = 5 6 x 5 = 30 75 + 30 = 105 105 - 3 - 2 = 100 6 x 3 = 18 18 + 2 = 20 6 - 1 = 5 20 x 5 = 100
