Molly sits with Gary Numan in the Countdown studio at ABC in early 1981 discussing his music, the UK musical press, his secondary career as a leading stunt pilot, comparisons with musicians and more ...
And still at it! The NME magazine once said’Numan will never influence any future bands, Kanye West, Nine inch Nails Marilyn Manson Shirley Manson garbage Franz Ferdinand Sugar babes Dave Grohl To name but a few Gary is doing a small tour of his first two albums, the Pleasure principle and replicas tour, I’m going in May! The press hated him with a passion but they were driving minis while Gary was flying planes!!! ❤️❤️🖤🖤
Dr. Stephen Stokes DC I think his Music was like A Gothic David Bowie. But as a person I wouldn't Say His Even remotely like Bowie. Both Are great In there own ways though.
@@joseboggiosequeira4050 By that logic, anyone who wears makeup and makes music copies Bowie, including those before him. I don't believe in this "master" sentiment. Bowie was and always will be one of the greatest musicians in history, but like anyone he had his flaws.
Stern unicorn a “gothic David Bowie” that sounds like a terrible assessment. Embarrassed for you. I loved Gary Numan and the tubeway army and hearing goth and Bowie has to be a low blow to Gary.
The hating critics they mentioned at the top of the interview played a role in shortening Gary's career. Thankfully, his music has stood the test of time.
"One group, I don't know if you've seen or heard of them - INXS"!! That's quite funny hearing that, considering how they skyrocketed into international stardom. Also luckily for the music world, Gary did indeed continue touring eventually.
Darn it Molly you didn't laugh at Garys jokes, I love his smile when he says 'we had a good week once.' 😄 I honestly never thought Garys sound resembled Bowies, their music was not similar, neither were their personalities. To be honest I think a lot of people drew that conclusion based solely upon their looks. They both had delicate beauty but were still masculine which is an incredibly rare trait. The flawless alabaster skin, tall and slender figure, exquisite writers hands, a wide and toothy smile, full lips, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, shaped brows and last but certainly not least those striking eyes you could spot from across a room. The physical resemblance was quite obviously there, but besides that they were both individualistic in their music and personalities. That uniqueness they had is something I admired about both Bowie and Numan, there was nobody else like either of them. They were pioneers of their genres but their sound continued to evolve as the years passed so their material was always fresh and unexpected. Bless you Gary, you are a treasure 💎
"Flying I got my flying licence in 1980 and flew around the world with my co-pilot, Bob Thompson, the year after. We actually had two attempts and succeeded the second time in my Piper Navajo (model, pictured below). On the first attempt in another aeroplane I owned, a Cessna 210 Centurion, we got as far as India before being arrested on suspicion of smuggling and spying. We went the other way on the second attempt and it took us about two months to complete the whole journey, with 50-plus stops. We arrived back on Christmas Eve 1981 and I remember thinking I'd get a hero's welcome, but there was nothing of the sort. When I was a kid it was big news when someone flew around the world in a little aeroplane, but nobody cared when I did it. Then to rub salt into my wounds the customs people ripped my aeroplane to pieces, looking for stuff. "
