Great video 😊 I am about 5 years away from retirement and I have started to gently pair down my belongings. I have started to shop my closet instead of running out to the high street to buy new clothes. Also, I have started to gently clean out my house. I think that de-cluttering my house will help me make any moves I have to make after retirement easier. Keep up the good work! 😊👍

Speaking from experience Stuff can be a huge item to deal with. Pairing down items in a hurry during a transition is surprisingly emotional. Starting early and going slowly is very smart!

I'll be retiring in 5 weeks and I think one important thing you left out is that people need to think about what they're retiring to. Five years is lots of time to develop hobbies and interests outside of work (for those who don't have them already) otherwise you'll end up like some retirees who are just sitting on their sofa watching TV all day.

That’s my struggle. I have lots of hobbies and things to do but not sure I want to anymore. Life has a way of changing best laid plans. I am upgrading with the idea that I can keep mentally active and still feel part of society through part time self employment. We have also decided to travel in North America and once more restrictions are lifted to other places while we still have the energy to do so.

Thanks once again. I took on some of your recommendations quite by accident a few years ago. I park about 1 km away where from work where’s there’s free parking and walk the rest of the way. It also saves me $180 a month in parking fees. That money saved me several thousand dollars over the years. I also started resistance training (lifting weights) and taking up swimming again. I noticed I was gaining a bit around the waist. Now not always recommended for everyone, I also started intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast and sometimes combining my lunch with dinner and eliminating all snack food. That saves a lot of money in the process while allowing me to slim down my belly fat.

That’s wonderful and will help you so much, congratulations! Have a nice weekend.

My tip would be to prepare for retirement by "trying it on" beforehand. Many times, people imagine how great a certain lifestyle would be and then, when it happens, it's not what they wanted after all. And maybe to have a "Plan B" or a few other options in case things change.

I am a big believer in the passive and not so passive income in the early years of retirement. Some of us need a transition period between full-time work and total retirement. Of course, volunteering is great, but working a side gig can be very rewarding. I retired 6 years ago just when Instacart was becoming popular. Did that job until COVID arrived and then stopped. Last year I started renting out a guest suite with its own entrance in our summer cottage. We have our privacy, host to many nice people, get to talk about our beautiful area AND get paid.

Great program, as usual. Agree with all your suggestions. Additionally we downsized our home and belongings. We went from a large two story home to single story. (4k sq ft to 2k sq ft). We also gave away truckloads of personal belongings to Salvation Army and Goodwill. If it was an item we haven’t used in the past year, it’s gone. The one thing we wish we wouldn’t have done, five year’s pre retirement, was get a pet cat. She has made it impossible to travel. However our travel budget funds are still intact. We don’t feel deprived. We have been world travelers in our younger years. We are thoroughly enjoying our less hectic retirement lifestyle. New hobbies: hifi audio, apple products, wine connoisseur, whiskey taster/explorer, painting, relaxing with a good book.

You're spot on. Financial and physical fitness are 2 things that are very important to long term wellbeing, but they often get put off because they are not immediate priorities. We think that there will be time later, but the sooner we start, the better off we'll be.

I applied for redundancy when I was 57 as I felt i needed a change of direction. I fully intended to continue working full time but when I started to manage my pension and investments, I realised that I didn't need to work. I officially retired when I turned 58 and I haven't regretted it at all. My point is that you need to have a good working knowledge of your pension (s) as this will give you greater understanding of your future finances. I "dismissed" my financial adviser and this saves me £7-£10k a year in fees. Let's just say you have your pension in 10 different funds - you already have 10 fund managers looking after your money! They get paid on performance so they have your best interests at heart.
@ThisIsOurRetirement
@ThisIsOurRetirement 2 года назад
We agree you do need to understand your financial position, and yes fees for financial advisors can definitely add up 😱so glad you are enjoying your retirement have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🌺😎

I love this video!! The one thing that I would add is for people with fur babies. Set money aside every payday in an account or a physical wallet for our pet's extreme medical needs. Veterinary medicine is expensive, regularly setting money aside is the best insurance. Don't get swindled into pet insurance when you can build a very healthy account on your own!!

Great video and topic guys, We became debt free / mortgage free at 45 and now working on the 7 year count down where hopefully we plan to pull the trigger and retire to our new adventure. Agree with all your comments only yesterday we were decluttering the home ready for the easy transition. Fitness is a key element, I've always been active but never worried about what I ate. Now I'm starting to cut down on the sugar intake, given up alcohol since lockdown began and really focusing on the retiring to lifestyle( less things more experiences) we want to have. Keep the videos coming Tina & Norm they really are inspiring and create a reassurance that us and so many will benefit from.

All great tips!!! I'm 2 1/2 years away from retirement and excited for the next chapter in my life. I think being debt free and having good health is so important. My plan is to spend time doing the things that I have a passion for like art, painting some beautiful pictures. I want to travel with my dog in a van around the U.S.. I want to take a cruise to Alaska and meet new people. I have planned my retirement well and worked hard to keep myself healthy. I honestly think debt free is the number ONE best thing you can do. We are close to retirement, as soon as we sell our business. We have no credit card debt, other than gas cards which we pay off monthly (& save us 15 to 20c per gal at the pump!). Only payments we have are 1 for van & 1 for camper. And of course the usual monthly payments for insurances. Although retirement brings me apprehension, without big debts hanging over my head I feel we can work through anything else. Thanks for the video!

It all makes sense...and I can honestly say that I can ✅ lots of boxes. We recently talked with two friends who are heading for retirement. It's not the financial issues with them which make them hesitant, but the BIG BLACK HOLE they fear. So we've explained how that hole looks once the time is there to retire. It shines a glowing light allowing one to grown, to enjoy and the relax a bit more. No more rushing to the boss, short cutting chores, visits to family and friends or holidays and extends 'play time' to enjoy the fruits of their labor. We hope they are a bit more confident and will keep an eye on them 😂! Thanks for my Sunday morning breakfast session. Have a wonderful Sunday and a GREAT week ahead. 😎 🍷 🎉 🇳🇿 🙋‍♀️ 🇳🇱

Following accurately (using a spreadsheet) where one's spending goes daily is very useful. That way one knows how much money is required yearly for different aspects of living (e.g. mortgage, insurances, utilities, hobbies, food, vet bills, etc.). I am completing my second year of this strategy and am ready to retire this August peace of mind knowing that I will be comfortable and not worry about ending up living under a bridge (unless the interest rates keep going up and through the roof. Then here comes the bridge to share with a small communitiy. 😄)

We are getting close to retirement and a bit nervous. Fortunately my wife and I have defined benefits pensions that pay about 33% of our gross income . My DB matured and I am able to retire anytime but there will be a 3% per year deduction if I start retirement before the age of 60. We also have some RRSP and building a cash portfolio to receive 10-15K of eligible dividends per year from Canadian blue chip companies. We already started building this portfolio primarily with financial, utilities, telecom and some pipelines stocks since they pay on average 4-4.5% yield and we get preferential tax treatment. Number of your precious videos inspired us and we believe we are in good shape financially. Can’t comment on health in retirement as life can always throw us a curveball and no money can fix health. Once again, thanks for the great contents and cheers. Perhaps we could run into you in Portugal one day. Have a great summer.

Hi Norm, Hi Tina; 5 years out, I was focused on two main items; health (getting in shape) and reviewing the things I was going to retire into (clubs, hobbies, events). About a year our I started testing the waters on some social clubs. This worked well as I had a sense for what I liked, did not like to help fill some of my social space. Finance was a focus much much earlier, 5 years out was mainly refining my balances to ensure I had enough low risk funds to handle the turbulent market times. Looking forward to you next video, thanks for all that you do.

All great tips. Being debt free is the most important tip of all. My wife and I have no credit cards and our vehicle is paid off. The next is the house. We will have it paid of before I retire. Health is second. I would say it’s 1B. There are a lot of great exercise channels on RU-vid. Sean Vigue has a great one. Especially for men. Eric Daw has a great one for seniors. I’ve been using these workouts for the last several years and I’m in better shape at 56 than I was at 36. It doesn’t matter how much money you make. If you’re spending to much or in poor health that you can’t enjoy your retirement then all your hard work would be a waste.

Very good advice, almost exactly what we did, but I would add becoming well informed about finances. My wife retired a few months before me and she spent weeks of full time studying and chasing information. Also think hard if you have forgotten pension entitlements or similar from previous jobs. The best investment we ever made was paying the missing year contributions for our British government pension (we emigrated to Australia many years before). Health, we bought cheap bikes when we were fifty and really unfit, short day rides turned into spending all our holidays touring with panniers, we still go for a ride in the hills just about every day (I'm 77) and we are both in excellent health with none of the aches and pains most old people complain about. Cycling is also cheap so it helps with the finances.

You are spot on with respect to health. do stay away from foods that have little to no nutritional value but have high caloric content those things spell death to retirement. most smart phones have health programs as well to monitor your activities and calories consumed and burned. If you are nearing retirement do make health a priority, it makes the day-to-day life way more enjoyable in retirement. Do learn how to prepare food, it is also a great way to enjoy life. No one can guarantee that one will live longer, life is long as it is, but you can enjoy every moment it has to offer. Poor lifestyle choices will end that dream in a heart beat, literally. Good subject to tackle and loads of useful tips. Do you think kids should learn about retirement before they leave school and enter into the world of work? I was told the soon you start regular saving, the more compound interest and less worry you'll have further down the line. How would inflation and interest rates kick into your savings plan? Most companies offer a pre-retirement course in the year before you retire - is this far too late? Love you two - half way to reaching that 100,000 mark already!! Well done. x
@ThisIsOurRetirement

That’s interesting Linda we always wondered why at high school they don’t teach kids about finance , banking saving and just managing money . A course a year before retiring personally we think is too late , your nearly there so you have so much to think about it’s almost wasted perhaps three years would be better although we had no courses or anyone to ask 🤔. Just dapper you two... Great information for prospective retirees. I paid attention to my retirement throughout my life time and as a result I made sure to have no mortgage. The only thing I did not manage, yet, is to not have a credit card payment. I guess is because i have a credit card with a 7.9% for over 25 years. Hard to believe it right? Here is the states, I had 401K savings program which was a free money type situation. I don't know what Canada has for its residents. In the 80's I was getting 100% match with a brewery in Detroit. After coming to FL to work for an insurance company I got a 75% match which few years later was changed to 50%. Everyone that works for a company that have this plan should participate in it as the savings grows fast. As far as the health, I did not do too much about it because I never gained much weight which vacillated between 140 to 160 lbs. I never liked exercises but now I do walk 30 minutes per day to help the ticker. I did always eat well during my lifetime and continue doing so. I do enjoy any type of food except liver 🤐. As always, I enjoyed your video. Have a great Sunday. Cheers. 🍷

You covered all the issues well. With our portfolio dropping due to inflation our financial planner advised us to use our house as security to access money during our retirement to allow us the freedom to make decisions and lifestyle changes should the need arise. It doesn’t mean you have to use it but it’s accessible at a lower interest rate. I don’t think there are reverse mortgages in Canada. This is something we’ve been talking about lately. Not sure I like the idea of having a lien on our property. It does allow more financial freedom, independence, and ability to age in place. There is lots to think about before retirement. We are downsizing but don’t plan to sell our house. That may happen in the future but for now it is low cost living. We live in an idyllic setting in the country. What we have also found is our energy levels drop and sleep diminishes as we age. Another reason to keep active.

Good video. To add to your points ... Keep a spreadsheet and enter in every single expense each day. Track it on a monthly basis - this is your actual lifestyle cost, pre-retirement. Want to maintain that lifestyle once you retire? Now you know how much it costs well ahead of time. In my case, I knew I had enough of air travel and wouldn't be flying to different countries. However I factored in "snowbirding" to the U.S. South East and calculated it would be cost neutral versus spending the winter in Canada. i.e. spend more on gasoline, spend less on heating as one example. I do passive income via investing. Cheers, Steve

In answer to your question about what advice I would give.....probably very similar to you. I got fitter, had a plan, started going to the reduced shelf for meal ideas, then my partner died before retirement happened. So I retired alone, and eventually found a part-time job (probably the only part of the retirement plan I achieved, but in the original plan it was only going to be as a challenge and short-term as I had a job with a relatively early retirement age). Now I juggle work, "having a life" and responsibilities, and don't have time for all my responsibilities. It's hard and not the retirement I planned.

For those fortunate enough to have a DB pension plan, it’s important to max it out while still working. It’s risk free money indexed to inflation - more or less - forever. This includes buying back any prior eligible service. You can then retire earlier or give your pension a boost.

Thanks so much Tina and Norm. Another great video. We are one month away from retirement. Would love to hear any advice for a 1 month away and first weeks of retirement time frame. One thing we were most concerned about going into retirement was: "can we afford to retire". For us, the only way to be sure was to track all our expenses. We have done that for the past 6 months and know were every single penny went. Its painful to do, but gives you so much confidence about what you'll need. Then we extrapolated those costs to what we'd need in retirement, with the main difference being the cost of insurance. We met with an insurance broker and have signed up for the new insurance. I work one more month and will have 1 month where I'm paying for the work insurance as well as medicare/supplement (we live in Texas so this is U.S. insurance we are talking about). But, lots of piece of mind knowing there isn't a lapse in insurance. Tracking every expense (my wife is lead on this, I'm lead on investments) and then meeting a couple of times a month to go over where the money is going just naturally causes you to spend less. We are still doing all the things we really want to do. Although, after tracking, we rarely eat out now (doordash and grubhub had previously been on speed dial) and we are healthier and saving so much money. I like your health/fitness suggestions. And, eliminating debt is so freeing also. Passive income we are definitely doing. Current strategy is to get more dividend stocks/funds. I really liked your previous videos where you discussed dividend producing stocks. Would welcome another one in that area. Even with the market out of control, the dividends are something you can count on. Investing is one of my main hobbies and I'm looking forward to more time for that in retirement. Sorry, for the long reply. Thanks so much for the video. We normally watch these 2 times since you impart so much good info. Thanks!

Hi Andy, You are really doing everything right, congratulations and it’s great you are both active in money management. @AndyCColeman
@AndyCColeman 2 года назад
@@johnristheanswer - true you can't always "count on dividends". However I have mitigation plans in place. I follow the bucket approch for investing for retirement. Bucket 1 is money outside the market in cash. I have 4-6 years in cash here. I will pull from this as needed because I do not want sequence of returns to be an issue. Bucket 2 is my dividend stocks. If things go well, I pull from there. If not, I just let it ride and adjust. Then I have in bucket 3 my fun investments where I investment in more unpredictable stocks and funds. Some people have a bucket 4 approach but that doesn't seem to work for me. But, I'm always adjusting.

All good stuff though I thought that the most important thing about getting ready retirement isn't financial but rather the "What am I going to do now?" aspect of retirement. There's not much out there in the literature about that but if you look you'll find them.
