It seems that everyone forgets that 6 years prior to this tournament Greek youngster team played in the European finals tournament in which it lost it to Spain that won the game with a penalty. Many players of that team played in the triumphant Euro 2004 tournament and showed finally their talent.
As a Greek, I can still not believe that we won the Euro!!! Thank you very much for reacting to this, it was one of the top miracles that happened in football.
my sister was watching the final with Portugal in Italy specifically in Verona it was very sad she told me that it was a huge square with many cafes the hatred of the Italians for Greece only then showed itself in front of her they strongly supported Portugal my sister was watching the match with her Italian husband and he was ashamed of the indecent phraseology memories from 2004, at the same time I was on a Greek island full of Italian tourists who support Greece now if she was just being nice to the Greeks I might suspect that yes she was.
Context... Greece has never won a game at a major tournament before. (World Cup or Euro Championship - They had only ever qualified for two in history. They were 150 - 1 Portugal were the host for the tournament and had a golden generation even without Ronaldo. This was Ronaldo's first tournament and he was very young so was not even considered a starter yet. There group was considered a group of death. Hosts, Spain and Russia are always a tough team. What Greece did was something of a miracle. A true underdog story. No one predicted this.
portugal in 2004 was like 10 times better than it is now. Russia and czech rebublic was also monsters at that time. Greece was insane for just getting through that group.

You must remember Jay, Portugal had Pauleta, Rui Costa, Luis Figo, who were legends, particularly Costa and Figo. Even the likes of Maniche, Simao who were very good players. Ronaldo was good back in 2004 but he only really became a monster in 2006/07, back then '04 he was viewed as an enormous talent.
I was 9 when it happened and i remmember it like yesterday. Every greek household was watching the game. I remember work for most people stopped, traffic stopped and viewership was at 100%. It was a magical time to be in Greece.

As a greek, watching that game vs czech republic again, i still think that we are gonna lose. This win was impossible. If God's truly exist, they were there that day for sure. I know there's supposed to be a big luck factor in every football match as real madrid has proven a lot of times lately, but this is was far beyond the term of "luck".

Portugal only lost cause Scolari has bricks for brains, he lost in the group stage against Greece, was obvious his plan didn't work and then wanting to be stubborn instead of changing the team's play he forced it and the outcome was the same , as a Portuguese despite him leading us to the finals (we did have a very good team though) and playing at home I will never forgive him and the next few years only confirmed it, he's a shit coach, he won with Brazil , true but at that time even my grandmother could coach Brazil....
Everybody in Greece , when we started winning against big football powers, thought that they shouldn't change nothing of the things they did in the first matches to be sure that our luck would change. So everybody was going to the same tavern, bar etc or at home with the same company , eating and drinking the same things and sometimes wearing the same clothes . At the final game I was wearing the same smelly polo shirt ( unwashed ) and the miracle happened. Funny but real😊😊😊😊
