the start of the problem is price gouging, allowed by the US government of its own citizens... the US gov't could buy up patents on the most common and useful medications for the public good, producing them at a fraction of the cost, since their isn't the legal requirement to make a profit, like private business(big pharma in this case) also producting them, in country, so all the regulations are in place and we aren't concerned about supply chain in times of trouble.

@@paladro I agree. It's hard to believe what some prescriptions cost! And the deductibles are out of hand with insurance companies. I am 65 next year so will at least be on Medicare, but still, I would assume it's the same situation with drug costs there. Crossing my fingers I can remain prescription-free.

@@IqueySure, but at some point personal responsibility needs to kick in. A lot of ailments that people take medications for could have been prevented in the first place with good health practices. You can't treat your body like a garbage can and expect good things in return. All the best to you.

Most of our prescription medications come from China. Even over the counter, come from China. Scary thought! But I would hope the American pharmaceutical companies over there (and there are many!) do have a good quality control that meet U.S. standards.

@@seb1520 thank you! I look back now and realize I was in shock. I had been taking care of my sweet mother for a couple of years. I woke up to her having fallen & passed away. Most likely she fell from heart attack. Then the day before her funeral in another state I got a call from my sons HR asking if I had talked to him. I was his contact person. I sent for a wellness ck and also sent my husband to be there and if he had passed to find his dog. He was 5 hours from from my moms house… all kind of a blurr. The police won’t tell you over the phone so I had to wait for someone where i was to come see me. My son had come up with plan to put his sister thru college some years before. He and I split the cost and his encouragement & willingness to pay half changed her life and gave her a great career. We focus on the good memories and feel he would be so proud of her success!

You can buy medication in Mexico, just from reputable pharmacies. I suspect a lot of these people were drug-seekers, though, but in some cases less reputable pharmacies will carry counterfeit medicines. Only buy from chains and places that look normal.

MrWoowootila - you sound paranoid. I've never known a single issue in 20 years of dealing with people have a counterfeit drug purchased from a legit pharmacy.

It's very unlikely a threat to people who get their prescriptions from a US pharmacy. In a country of 330 million people, there will be a pharmacy or two doing this, but these drugs, including prescriptions, are tracked very closely and substitution with street copies will not be very profitable, as the black market cost is very high in the US. Street versions of these drugs cost much more than the pharmacy is getting. The entire system is far more regulated and monitored these days. 99.999% of the problem will come from black market purchases, which are probably almost always counterfeits, and pharmacies in places like Mexico where prescriptions are not required and cost of both counterfeit and the real thing are fairly cheap.

A wall won’t stop containers full of dope coming in on ships.

Most won't be counterfeits that contain fentanyl or meth unless they're opioid copies or copies of amphetamine compounds like Adderall. If they're not legit, most other kinds of medications will be placebos, i.e. no active ingredient. How would it be on purpose? Who exactly would risk involvement with shady Mexican pharmacies just to stop a tiny number of Americans from getting their medications outside of the US system? That doesn't make any sense when a rumor would suffice.
