As an Indonesian, I always wondered how you travel in the US. Must have suck to have a family on opposite sides of the country. Turns out, I already felt travelling that far without even knowing it. I always thought Indonesian is a small place. Just a couple of islands in the South East, even if considered the largest cluster of islands, I still felt it's small compared to the Western continents. But damn, to know that small cluster of islands is literally bigger that most European countries, made me felt like "How tf did they invade us pre and post WW2?!"
@M A Hahaha mate your so wrong, Australia has one of the highest tourism markets and get tens of millions of visitors every year, don't know what part of the country you have been too but clearly it was the wrong part
As an Indonesian (in this case, I live in Sumatra), indeed Indonesia is really big. 4-6 hours of road trip and you're still in the exact same province.
From a European's perspective: You made China seem much more reasonably sized to me. It's the same size as the continent but with double the population. The perspective really normalised my mental image of China.
@@alengrm7488 That only counts for the northernmost part of the country. The rest borders Finland or Sweden, and so has Russia, Finland and Sweden between Norway and North Korea.
@@rizandro it still counts, i mean the border russia has with north korea is even smaller, but both norway and north korea are neighbours of russia regardless
I'm an Indonesian, was baffled when my lecturer told me that he used to travel between European countries between minutes (30 minutes-ish), lika Belgia to Netherlands, to Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.. I was like.... lol..30 Minutes is an average time for me to reach my college from Home...
It takes around 10 hours to drive through Germany from the North to the South. Of course, if you are close to the point where three countries meet (e.g. Germany, Belgium and Netherlands), you can jump to all three countries in a couple of minutes. But I can also go from the US to Canada in 10 minutes if I am directly at the border.
@@liovious Unfortunately, you are wrong. The literal definition of the world is, "the Earth, together with all of its countries and people's." And the definition of the Earth is, "the planet on which we live; the world."
One thing that blew me away was how spread out Kiribati’s islands are and if you put the western most one’s over Ireland the eastern most ones reach Southern Russia which is crazy considering how little land area Kiribati has.
fun fact: the distance between Kiribati's most western point and Kiribati's most eastern point is greater than the distance then the entire country of Iran
Walker It wouldn’t have mattered had he said “let’s look at Ireland”, but he specifically said “Let’s look at the *Republic of* Ireland” where definitely changes the meaning. The Republic of Ireland specifically excludes Northern Ireland
New Zealand in the 1980s had up to nearly 80 millions sheep, that was its peak. Then sheep meats market dropped, the sheep population was also controlled. Nowadays, the sheep population of New Zealand is around 35 million, a rather sustainable number.
Indonesia has about 3 time zones, I believe. I have missed few appointment because I wasn't aware in the beginning. The domestic flights can be very expensive especially to Papua!
Doesn’t seem like bullying if you have at least tiny knowlege of the world. Most of Australia is uninhabitable desert. A big part of Brazil is jungle. Significant part of China is Tibetan plato. While Europe- at least nowadays - is all pleasant and suitable for agriculture.
@@boilingcupcakes it's silly how one protects their joke after the other founds it silly. The cruel fact is, sometimes the problem is in the joke not in your audience.
For me Chile was the biggest surprise. I have visited the place 3 times, and drove from O'Higgins to Chiloe on the Carretera Austral, but never realized how long it really was.
In India too on an average, it takes around 8 hours to drive to another state both vertical and horizontal. Every Indian state is culturally and linguistically very different so it is like Europe but a single country. We have around 26 official languages.
Indonesia is also not only big in terms of territory but Indonesia is also a great nation, a nation that never gives up, our ancestors used to fight against the invaders with only sharp bamboo.
@@banned0404 yup we indonesians have to deal with kominfo but they recently made steam available again so no more problems but yea we fought the british and dutch together with bamboo sticks and won somehow
Most people don't know that the distance between Sabang (Indonesia's westernmost city) to Merauke (Indonesia's easternmost city) (5,257 km) is longer than London to Mecca (4,792 km).
I studied a lot of geography in university, and enjoyed it immensely. I learned from my first prof in that field just how awful the Mercator projection is. It's purpose, we were taught, was forcease of navigation, but it bears no resemblance to the actual world d size wise. I did learn to appreciate equal area maps and of the several I've seen, Goode's broken homolosine is IMO the sanest.
He's extremely close for an American though. He got it right, but he put the stress on the wrong syllable. He should have stressed the "New," not the "Fin"
It's that old adage: what's the difference between Europe and the US? Americans think 200 years is a long time; Europeans think 200 miles is a big distance.
@@Yo-jv6kx nah, Maluku was contain a lot of islands. It's a former provinces who split into 2 province today. Maybe Seram and Ambon Island, but it isn't as big as other island in Indonesia
Agreed that you may have an American and European perspective. Why don't you include an Asain perspective? Comparing it with India/China. I'm sure your watch analytics details out a huge viewer base from asain countries aswell. Don't overlook them, a humble suggestion.
Because they have so little thing to be proud of and they dont wanna be left out by other countries XD, dont get me wrong, i live in indonesia, but i'm rarely satisfied with what my country offer
Europe: Small slither of land that is in effect single handedly responsible for how the world came to where it is now, good and bad. I know it's vastly oversimplified but also not too much, since the way europe acted always shaped how the rest lived A LOT. See America...untouched, untouched, rarely visited, inhabited but still untouched...europeans!
Well already new this so didn’t learn anything in this video ! And one more thing which make Europe smaller is the route connecting with motorways trains and airplanes
I lived in Indonesia for 3yrs 2017-2019 and the best thing is the people, people are sweet and genuine there and ofc the places are so beautiful like the Jakarta city, Bandung city and the Bali island and yea… I lived in java only😂
Good thing thats only java, because if you wanted to go from jakarta to surabaya, it would take you 10+ hours just to pass a good ammount of distance to call “close”.
Yeah it actually is because people from Other Islands moved to Java mainly because it is more developed than other, people seeking for Job and better life.. mostly to Jakarta.
I’m Indonesian and my family is too and I just showed my mom she was like wow although she knew Java has a big population. Anyway have a good day for anyone reading this!
@@AdamOctorachmadi not to mention that Indonesia's second largest city (Surabaya, literally on the other side of the island) is also home to about 13 million people, myself included
What do you expect from tropical Paradise? Of course there will be more people living there than a vast endless uninhabitable Frozen wastelands of Russia.
What's makes it finally amazing about Indonesia is that the population is as big as the US 🥲 So Indonesia is a literal US in size and population in Asia next to china. If the dutch had Indonesia as a colony the dutch today they would be relevant today.
Indonesia is smaller than 14 countries including Saudi Arabia, Algeria and the U.S Indonesia is 1,9m km. Algeria is 2,5m km. Algeria is bigger than Indonesia, actually. You might think Indonesia is bigger just cuz of the long distance between an Island and another, but that's not the case.
A memorable thing about flying from Sydney to London was flying over India for hour after hour after hour...then the next day I said: "Hey, we're over Holland!....aaaaand it's gone!"
If Georgia and Georgia fought, then the us would step in, in which case Georgia would demolish Georgia and Georgia would be defeated leaving the other Georgia as the supreme Georgia, with utter control over Georgia.
He wasn't trying to show the largest country, but the one with the biggest difference between reality & how it looks on a Mercator projection map. The DRC is much closer to the equator so the size difference is MUCH bigger than Algeria's.
My Germany buddy, as a telecom consultant said that Indonesia is very challenging, is not easy doing build the telecom infrastructure in Indonesia. Not like India, Brazil or South Africa as the subcontinent country, Indonesia has 17.000 more islands, and 6.000 more are habitant. It's not easy connecting whole of islands, nature challange, roughest sea, volcanic mountains, with thousand ethnic and local languages. with a million complex problems He was still amaze.
@@17zan lol... the panzer won't be effective since our roads are either covered by forests or sea... The only thing that effective are some small vechicles or naval warefare
