Joe is not afraid to sound crusty at times--an old-timer grousing. But within 30 seconds, whether you agree or disagree with his points as examples or exceptions come flooding in, you hear his intelligence, range of experience and perceptiveness that make him so special today--a direct connection back to what made him a pleasure to listen to in them olden days. Thanks for releasing so much of your unreleased footage!
Well, indeed. Right on the nose about everything. I say this to my younger colleagues all the time and they just don't get it. A recent study showed that there has been a drastic decrease in the lyrical and musical complexity of the average pop song since 40 years ago. I adore Country Joe. I wish he was given a more prominent role in today's public discourse. When I started at UC Berkeley in 1987 I was so obsessed with Country Joe that I told myself I was going to write to him and ask if I could meet him. I was going to offer to take him to lunch. I wanted to tell him how heartbroken I was that I was born too late for Berkeley in the 1960s and that everything I believed in was from that era. But I chickened out.
Joe is still such a genius it makes me so happy to hear his perspective on things. How on earth did you go about getting in touch with such a legend as him?
Daniel, this interview is the best I've seen with Country Joe, great work. Would you ever release the entire unedited version? I'd be curious to hear him finish some of those points.
makes some great points, although don't agree about perfect music! More the opposite there is no perfect music, especially with alot of the newer bands, and or artists. Hook in a song is true, very little today, and most songs don't have a solo in them like the older tunes. Yes every performance is important, agree about Rap is all about sex. and or exploiting women.
