Just a century ago, Austria was a mighty empire! It contrasted half of Europe and could compete with countries such as the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. However, due to Hungarian separatism, the Austrian Empire made concessions, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire was formed. But it didn't last that long. In 1914, the Serbian nationalist Gavrila Princip shot the Austrian heir to the throne, during which the First World War began, which put an end to many empires, including the Austro-Hungarian one... Later on the country was annexed by Germany right before the Second World War, and the people of Austria supported such an event.
