This is a cover from the Nine Inch Nails original version (where it is about drug addiction and depression) Cash could truly relate to. But Cash's version is so powerful, that NIN said publicly that "Hurt" is now a Johnny Cash Song. Since this song is kind of a tribute to his life/career and to his fans, on this same album Cash wrote an original song that reflects his outlook on the afterlife too. I don't see it as his "goodbye." Though I've seen many people quote that Rosanne said that when conversing with him about this music video. I never heard her say that in the interviews that I watched.
He was pretty ill when he made this. His wife June came downstairs to check on him and they decided to leave her in the video. A few month after this June died. A few months after that he died.

@@thebrazilianatlantis165 I think it is a bout drug addiction but more than just drug addiction. There is a strong Christian message to the song which transcends just drug addiction. I am not saying it is not about drug addiction because that is part of Cash's story. But I think it really shows a statement about Cash's whole life given a biblical worldview. Or anyone's life really. That id what makes the song more universal in scope.

Johnny wasn't in charge of the video (except that he could choose to sign off on it, which he did). I don't think the song as Johnny sang it has a Christian message as such, as opposed to e.g. other religions, I think "crown of thorns" is a self-deprecating metaphor as Johnny used it in the song, insulting his own sometime vanity and sometime victim mentality. Of course many of the realizations Johnny was coming to are completely consistent with Christ's message. And with the famous messages about what's really important in other religions, and what's really important to sensible atheists. Johnny never e.g. points upwards in the video like Pharrell Williams, and he might have been agnostic at this point or whatever; he was a good man with a deep, thoughtful message of regret and what matters. If it seems like I'm saying the inserts of Christ in the video _misunderstood_ the self-deprecation in the song itself, yes I think that (or to be more charitable they were laying the irony on thicker, or whatever, if so I think overall they failed). Johnny was not Jesus and he knew it!
I like the closeup of the Johnny Cash bust at 2:35. If you think a bust of yourself is what's going to make you happy, think again. Or how about the pouring out a drink for himself.
I think they are both great, the original is better in my opinion, listening to the person who actually lived through those emotions and wrote those lyrics just makes it better to me.

Us older ones know what it's like to see everyone that mean so much to us pass on. It's like your childhood disappears and you are left with a world that you don't know anymore. I understand more and more as time goes on what it's like to grow old.

I don't think either of them would have lasted long without the other after all those years together. I'm pretty sure that Johnny would have ended up self-destructing in some way much earlier in life if he hadn't had June.
My father almost died in a building fire back in 2003 (he later recovered and lived all the way until 2015) and that day was so hectic (with him being admitted to one hospital and then transferred to another that had a dedicated burn unit), so I was so wrapped up in the parade of moments, I never had a chance to cry (it was the only day in our lives that we said "I love you" to one another, but that's another story). It wasn't until the following morning when this video aired on MTV (yeah, they still played videos then) that I broke down in tears. So, this song and video always brings me back to that moment.
I love you guys. You aren't afraid to get deep and really look past the obvious. As a side, he always wore black and I think you'll find his reason why interesting. “I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times." He was a true icon of not just American music but Americana as a whole. A rare breed of man who truly cared about people and never forgot where he came from.
Trent said he was unsure about Johny doing this cover because this was such an emotional song for him... after hearing johnnys version he said it was like a man stealing his wife....he made the song his own
Definitely hits different with Cash. Trent wrote it when he was 20 and troubled. However, he had the advantage of still rectifying his wrongs. Cash sang it near the end of his life and you personally feel his regrets knowing there’s little time left to change anything.

The video was recorded in February of 2003. His daughter, on seeing a preview of the video, said to him it sounded like he was saying goodbye, he replied that he was. June Carter Cash, his 2nd wife, is the woman sat on the stairs in the video; also a singer in her own right who toured with him and sang with him on several songs. She had come down to check on her husband that day as his health was declining. June Carter Cash passed away a few months after the video recording in May of 2003 and a bereaved Johnny Cash followed her a few months later in the September. The song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and is about his battle with addiction and depression. Cash also an addict and alcoholic for much of his early life, spending time in Jail on half a dozen occasions for possession. The song encompasses the way both musicians life threads are woven together and entangled across the decades between them, so much so that Trent when he saw the video said it was like loosing his Girlfriend, as the song had become Johnny's. Johnny was a campaigner for prison reform and the rights of Native Americans and much of his material reflected his own passions and darker past. It was June that Cash attributed to rescuing him from his drug and Alcohol addiction a theme of the song. Carter is the person played by Reese Witherspoon alongside Joaquin Phoenix, in the biopic of them: Walk the line. Johnny Cash's star had declined in the 80s and the Museum to his life with the smashed Gold Disk on the Floor, used as one of the backdrops to the video, ended up being shuttered. In the 1990s Rick Rubin and American Recordings more of a Rap, Punk and Metal label sought Cash to record for their label, and offered Cash complete artistic freedom. With them his career revived and he brought out his most critically acclaimed albums, the America series, bringing Cash to a new younger audience; starring on The Simpsons and Headlining at Glastonbury in 1994. The 4th and penultimate album of the America series from which this is one of several Hit Singles: American IV: The Man Comes Around, You may recognise the Title Track too, was released in November of 2002, and he was still working on his final Album right up to the end and that was released posthumously.
It was reported that one of their kids cried when she seen this video became this is her father saying goodbye! This video was made in 2002. His wife, June died in May, 2003 and Johnny died in Sept. 2003. You can see that he was very ill during the video. You can't see it, but June was suffering cancer at that time led to her death in May, 2003. With his illness plus losing love of his life, Johnny died in Sept., 2003. Trent Reznor and Johnny had a mutual friend. Friend is the producer, Rick Rubin. Johnny informed that he wanted to cover NIN's "Hurt" Rick talked to Trent about Johnny doing the song. Trent gave an OK. Trent had some reservations of letting Johnny do the song, but he heard Johnny's version. Trent - I am paraphrasing - This song belongs to Johnny.
That is some paraphrasing. What Trent said is that Cash made the song his own; that is - the cover is all Johnny Cash. The song itself is still one of the most personal songs for Trent.
I could be wrong, but what I read, the cover song was RECORDED in 2002, but the video itself was made in February of 2003, three months before June died, with Johnny following her four months after that. That is seven months after the video was made.
Johnny Cash grew up very poor in that little shack that you saw, during the depression. His older brother Jack was working at a lumber mill when he was pulled into an unguarded saw and fatally injured, though it would take a week for him to finally succumb to the injuries, while he lay in his bed at home with his family by his side, unable to provide more extensive medical care for him. Johnny went early to the funeral and, at 12 years old, helped to dig his own brother's grave. He carried so much pain throughout his life, and, though faced it and his demons with love and help from June and her family, I think the ghosts of all the pain he carried for so long are palpable when you hear him singing this lament at the end of his life, as he was clearly preparing to leave, himself, and pass on. So beautiful.
T, i watched this video on TV when it came out, John knew he was dying, at the end of the video when he closes the lid on the piano keys, it was his way of closing his own Casket, i damn cried, i have not been able to watch this video for Many years until you posted it, thanks R.I.P. The original is good too. Trent Reznor's version is his own. Johnny Cash made his version his. One about drug usage and his feelings to Trent Reznor. Johnny Cash version was about his mortality. Both outstanding from their point of view.
He knew he didn't have much time left. He knew wife was the same. This was his last hurrah. I was 12 when his wife passed and 13 when he passed. Dad cried listening to this song when he first sung it. Afterwards he turned to me (I was alone in the car waiting for my brother with dad). He said we had just heard cash for the last time ever and he was right. I cry remembering my father who passed in August 2021. Miss him dearly.
So my dad watched this video with me when it first came out. The little white house was the house he was raised in and the "House of Cash" was one of his first house that at one point was turned into a museum. The year before he made this video he had a massive stroke complicated by heart failure. No one expected June to die first...no one. He died just a few months after her as expected because he always said he couldn't live without her. The lady in the picture at the first of the video was his mother whom he adored.

I am 56 years old now and whenever I watch this Song and Music with Johnny Cash, tears run down my Cheeks, also when he and His wife June can be seen together in this video, and I think with this Song he made his Peace with Himself. Johnny Cash is and always will be a Legend.
When he watched this video with his daughters they said, "Daddy, its like you are saying goodbye." He looked at them and said, "I am." He died not long after.
One of the other things that I should point out is The Shattered Columbia framed record on the floor. After all the hits that Johnny had for them they dropped him from the label in 1986 after 28 yrs .

Deep mournful song. As was noted it seems to be a last hoorah type effort and I agree. Another great song that hits those same feels is Glen Campbell's last song "Im not gonna miss you". He was suffering from Alzheimer's. It's heart wrenching.
I worked with Campbell before his Alzheimer's was public. He was out with his kids (mostly) on stage and Kim keeping him tethered. The venue served meals in the showroom and after the band and crew were served, we headed to the line. Glen and Kim came in and we gestured them ahead, "after you, Mr. Campbell." He looked up and offered his hand, "I'm Glen, what's your name? Mr. Campbell is my daddy and he's not here.... uh... is he, Kim?" "No dear, and I don't think he will be" and she kind of nodded at us. During the show he started one song in the wrong key and his daughter tapped him on the shoulder, "dad, we do that in G." He just smiled, moved the capo, and started over. His guitar playing was still very good and it was clear he was enjoying himself on stage. The documentary on his Alzheimer's is an unflinching look at what the disease does. I'm sure the last year was tough for Kim and the kids.

That home is his childhood home in a place called Dyess, Arkansas... It was a small community built in the 1930s around the time Johnny was born, his father, Ray cash worked in that community. Several moments during this video were unplanned, particularly with the appearance of June Carter Cash, her sitting on the stairs and watching with a reflective, but proud/sad look was completely unplanned. Regarding Johnny's appearance at this time he was in the full grips of old age, but also his diabetes had begun to really take a toll on him. Granted, he was only seventy-two or three when he passed. But this song to me has always been not only him. Looking back on his life, expressing regret in some instances but also understood that he lived his journey and he was human. It also stands to me as a beautiful declaration of his faith.
Yes. That was his childhood home. It has since been taken over by a foundation, and a university and been completely renovated and decorated exactly the way it was during his childhood. The flood image was a real event here in Eastern Arkansas when he was a child that affected thousands of people.
Everytime I watch this video it chokes me up. Yes.....this absolutely was his "Swan Song". It was a very fitting walk through the life of a musical legend. Even though it's a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. ....Johnny Cash made it his own through his delivery. Those Def American / American Recordings albums that Johnny did with Rick Rubin are truly fantastic, especially the American Recordings IV record, the best of the whole bunch imo.
I'm glad young people are discovering Johnny. Some people think he's similar to many of the county singers today, who are big on MAGA. NO!!! He was a champion for all people. He sang for prisons. He sang for Natives. He was honored by Jewish groups. Cash wore black because it represented the poor and disenfranchised. The KKK hated him, libeled him, threatened and plotted to kill him. Johnny never backed down and sued the KKK for $25 million. He said, “The Klan is despicable, filthy, dirty, and unkind.” He was the real deal. And so was his pain. He was an alcoholic and hurt himself and his family. He also was a man who struggled with his actions conflicting with his faith. But he was honest, deep and capable of introspection as is evident by the video. And his children carry his legacy. They publicly denounced the Charlottesville White supremacy rally when they saw a photo of a man in attendance wearing a Johnny Cash T-shirt. If you watched the movie walk the line with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon you will get a spot on look at his life from a young age to an adult. No matter what he could never be good enough to his father after the loss of his brother. It's a great movie regardless and a must watch. Great reaction guys!!
One of the pluses with Walk the Line Reese and Joaquin were chosen by Johnny and June to play them in the movie, they both got to spend a few years with the Cash's to learn there history so it would be authentic to the movie

I think Johnny never got over the death of his big brother and the fact that his father blamed him for it as Johnny left his brother alone at the mill, when they were always told to stay with each other. There was an horrendous accident and his brother was killed. I think Johnny tried all his life to get close to God for forgiveness. I guess you have to forgive yourself first. No one delivers a song like him or covers a song as well as Johnny
This WAS his last hurrah, the last time he was on video. House of cash was in severe disrepair in this video, his wife died a few months after filming (she's in the background), he died a few months after her. And house of cash burned down a few years later.
The drug addiction is correct and not kinda. Firstly, the song was written by Trent reznor of nine inch nails and it was about drug addiction. Although the song for Johnny is kinda looking back on life he also went through a period of addiction to amphetamines and barbiturates. So you picked up right but it is also a man looking back on life. And realizing that without his best friend and soulmate (June) it’s really not worth it
Everything you said was true, but I think at the time he was also focusing on all the other people in his life he'd lost, as June was still with him during the making of the song and later the video. It had the shot of his mother in the picture, his childhood home, June of course and his daughter, but possibly other people I'm not familiar with. Certainly the loss of his brother was a significant sorrow he had lived with.

That cuts deep. It means a lot to me personally because (I'm old) I saw Johnny cash perform at the world fair in Knoxville, tn, in 1982. i was 10. My dad was not a big music guy but he grabbed me by the collar and told me to listen to this guy because he is important. It didn't mean anything to me as a young man but I remembered. Months after he died I finally found an opportunity to cry. It was when I was alone and I heard this song for the first time.

That small house was his home. It is in a little town in Northeastern Arkansas call Dyess. In every October there is a Johnny Cash Heritage Festival that honors Johnny Cash's musicand the New deal that President Roosevelt started which is how the town of Dyess came to be.
I love that the lyrics and Johnny's voice alone got the meaning across even without the video, it's cool that you listened to it first and then saw this incredible video. I remember going to The House of Cash when it was open. It was pretty interesting. The "One Piece at a Time" Cadillac was parked there. I understand that there is a new Cash museum in Nashville. I haven't been to it since I haven't lived in Tennessee for many years. I lived in Memphis from '85 to '88 and went to Nashville several times when I lived there.
When Trent Reznor wrote this song, it WAS about drug addiction and regrets. When Johnny Cash sang it, this also applied but I took this as more of a metaphor for everything he regretted from his past and all the people he let down along the way.
when you sell your soul to success like Johnny did, you begin to realise after a couple of years that standing on the top of a mountain means nothing in the end. at best you lived your life your own way. but when you are 70 years old and broken, what value does evrything hold to you? he ended the song by those lyrics "if i could start over again. a million miles away, i would keep myself. i would find a way". those lyrics speaks to me like threw away his soul for the level of success he could accomplish. but he ended up regretting alot of what he did, despite how successful he was.

Johnny was a man of deep Christian faith and I think the imagery of Christ interspersed with lyrical content about his empire of dirt brought out Johnny's feelings about his faith at the end of his life. James 4:14 "whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away."
The House of Cash is in Hendersonville TN which is where I'm from and currently live and Johnny lived in Hendersonville in a beautiful home that burned down probably 20 yrs ago. My mother was best friends with Roseanne, his daughter when they were in grade school. He knew about hurt. Thats for sure. RIP Johnny and June 🙌
Johnny Cash's biggest song was probably ring of fire, which of actually pretty good! You should do that one. June Carter (his wife in this video) wrote it for him, I think before they were even a thing. He was hung up on her for a long time before they ever married. You should seriously watch the walk the line movie sometime. Again, not a country guy, but a good song is a good song and the movie was really good. I heard someone say in an interview that when Johnny was a kid, he was a fan of the Carter family and he said that he was going to marry June one day. Don't remember who said it, or what interview it was.

He was the bad boy of country music, which gave him a bigger crossover audience into the Pop, Folk and Gospel music fans. First Singer to ever do a Concert in a Maximum Security Prison at Folsom Prisom filmed in a documentary that is excellent to watch.

Very humble beginnings. Became a huge star....actor singer, songwriter....icon. No matter how successful he was, he never felt like a success. His last song.
