I'm old enough to have heard this on repeat over multiple stations when it was first released. At that time, I just like it as a Skynard song. As time went on, I became a parent and then a grand. Now the lyrics have taken on a whole different meaning. It's what I hope I have taught my kids & grands. And it can bring tears to my eyes. And now that kind of rock is referred to as Southern Rock.
I am a heavy metal fan, I am Spanish and I have limited knowledge of English, I am a taxi driver and I play a rock station(no heavy metal) so that no one gets scared in my taxi..... and since I discovered this song I have goosebumps every time I listen to it.
This one brings me to tears. My mother had alzheimers and the last coherent thing she told me was " I've always been proud of you, do whatever makes YOU happy." Miss ya mom.
Same dude. I lost my mother unexpectedly a few years ago. Skynyrd was her favorite band and this song gets me tearing every time but I love it. Stay strong bro keep your head up 💪😤🤘.
“We just chat shit all of the time.” Just shot milk out of my nose! It is a Beautiful thing to see two people enjoy each other’s company so much. You show such interest and respect for each other’s opinions. Never stop “chatting shit.”
From a Dave with kids who are now both in university, you guys just nailed it. Dave, it can pass you by before you even know what’s happened. We dropped our second off to university this fall and I wondered where the hell the time went, and whether I spent too much of it working too hard trying to support them. You guys totally nailed what I’ve been going through for the last month…. For the last 20 years…..
Shinedown is still an active band and still touring. Brent Smith is an amazing vocalist. Their cover of Simple Man is great. Their OMV for Simple Man pays homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I believe both bands share the same hometown area.
Ronnie Van Zant’s daughter was married to one of the members. Ronnie’s granddaughter is holding his picture in the video. There is a video on RU-vid of the granddaughter performing with Shinedown in 2019.
i am just like you, i have listen to this song for a long time and when i hear it i calm down and become relaxed. i have even tried to take the message of the song to heart to become a "simple" good man
Every time I see a couple watch this song I always notice the guys dig the music but the ladies pick up lyrics in a heartfelt way men can’t quite grasp like them !!!!!! !
Great job! Haven’t seen a bad one from you guys. Would love to buy you a drink, sit & chat. Alas, I live in the States! I’m 60+ years old and have always heard their name pronounced as you originally said, Dave. The album cover photo in your thumbnail was taken on Main Street where I’ve lived for 36+ years. Have never lived more than 10 miles away, for that matter… Keep it up & thanks, as always!
Let me break it to you...The All man Brothers were the forefathers of Southern rock Check out shipping Post, Statesboro Blues, Melissa, No Way Out, etc etc . Don't get me wrong, I Love sky her but the all man brothers were genious.
Hey yall yes I'm from the country, do you guys live in the states, I'm from Texas I really enjoy watching your reactions to the videos, would love to purchase your merchandise. Keep up the great work! Would yall please do some reactions to Stevie Ray Vaughan he's from Texas as well ,his Legend will live on !
Y’all need to check out their live performance of Free Bird in 1976 at Knebworth when they opened for the Stones. As the story goes, they were told the only thing they couldn’t do was to walk out on the “tongue” of the stage, which was shaped like the Stones logo. Of course, Ronnie Van Zandt didn’t listen.😏
The band had such a problem with people mispronouncing their name, they actually titled one of their albums "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd". They named themselves after a teacher at their school, named "Leonard Skinner". He hated them, and treated them like shit for being long hairs, so for revenge they named themselves after him.
Lynyrd Skynyrd put out 5 albums in the early 70's before a 1977 plane crash ended it all. This song was written in about an hour by Gary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zandt. They had both just lost female family members that gave them life advice.
I lost a good friend around this time last year. This was his favorite song. A lot of the things you guys spoke on were the reasons he loved the song too. It's awesome to see you guys reacting to it in such a positive way. Rock on, and keep it simple. 🤘
This song always gets me in the feels too. It's such good good advice. I can always picture a mother sitting down with her son and telling him these things. Good advice for anyone.
Southern Rock is a blend of Country, Blues and Rock if you are a music lover I suggest watching a documentary titled Muscle Shaols ... This recording studio in Muscle Shoals Alabama recorded some of the greatest hits we hear... There will be some very familiar faces you will recognize like 1 of yours Mick Jagger to start....
If the end credits of a movie is the only place you've heard Free Bird then you have missed out. Watch their performance live in the Oakland Coleseum in July 1977. Subscribed.
Three guitars all playing the solo in the middle. Thank you for reviewing this great tune. I sang this at my Brother's memorial service because it was his favorite song. I'm not a great singer by any means but I did my best. I also love this song and have, ever since the album hit the record store in Tampa, FL when I was 15. Now I live in the hometown of L.Z., Jacksonville, FL. Everyone here is so, so proud of them! Me too! ❤️
Watch the movie Muscle Shoals about the millions of songs recorded at the music studios, including Brits like The Rolling Stones, Steve Winword, Bono, etc. plus American artists.
Very good young lady….it’s not country rock. However,…you are correct, you heard the southern accent etc. We call it southern rock and…..if anyone group captures the term, “Southern Rock”. This group is probably at the top of the list in the category of Southern Rock
There was a lot of Country Music influence in Rock: Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Allman Brothers, and the Eagles--to mention a few. I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 1974 and they were a blast. Came back on twice.
No Dave, you nailed it . Nobody here in the US pronounces it like Leonard (The pronunciation key is on the album cover for fucks sake. though I have no idea what an e with a half moon above it means). Lin erd...
The key to life and this song is the phrase, don't forget there is Someone above-God. Without God there is no eternal fulfillment or sense of purpose to life.
There is a few other Bands you can look into Marshall Tucker to start with. You are correct when you said Country Music was born out of Blue Grass and Blue Grass was born from Irish and Scouts people coming into this country.
Dave I got my forty plus acres my man. My neighbor has 1100. Nobody near us. My driver was like a six hundred yards of the county road. Nobody on that road but us. Safe…no violence and quiet. Small town about ten miles away. Ninth generation American ….family came from Scotland. fifeshire.
At 67 , i first heard this as a new song. Still great. Glad young people get to find them. Southern rock as good as it gets..began in JACKSONVILLE . Fl. Great band. Saw whats left of them 2 yrs ago along with METALLICA . Daytona speedway. Still sounded great .. soo many yrs ltr. Thats good music that last over 50 yrs!! Good for you. .. dan. JACKSONVILLE FL…
This was an original southern fried rock band who contradicted all stereotypes. Example, anti gun - Saturday Night Special, from the south. But, nothing……. is more epic than their standoff with Neil Young. The inspiration for 3 of the greatest songs ever! Southern Man, Alabama and Sweet Home Alabama.
Hi Guys I like this song. Goid Luck with everything. FYI If you watched Supernatural the lead actor who played Dean in the show also sings this song. P.S Some of the other actors in the show also sing. .( Jensen Ackles).
When speaking about a parent missing out on their child growing up because of working to provide a better life for their family, it reminded me of the Harry Chapin song "Cats In The Cradle". It'll hit you in the feels too. Ugly Kid Joe did a great cover of it, but I definitely recommend listening to the original first.
For many, even tons of money is never enough. If in one's everyday life, they could differentiate between selfish and selfless pursuits, would they be more satisfied? From my point of view, I see too many angry billionaires. That someone up above brings peace and grace. When is enough money enough? Lusting after the rich man's gold doesn't seem to bring satisfaction to the hearts of people.
I remember seeing in a documentary, Gary Rossington talking about how much they were influenced by the Beatles and Stones. It’s so interesting how that influence produces this form of music.
I recently had a dear friend pass away at 60, completely unexpected. It was upsetting as hell. I had no idea his family had done so, but they selected this song for his funeral. Boy did it hit hard.....but in a good way!
My friend and I went Lynyrd Skynyrd concert back in July with original singer, Ronnie Van Zandt's younger brother, Johnny doing the singing. Johnny regrouped LS 10 years after fateful day when in 1977, plane carrying the band crashed killing Ronnie and I think 3 other members plus the pilot. Last original member, Gary Rossington died early this year. As band played this classic, tribute to Gary Rossington by showing photos of him from early days to current. Current band called Shinedown does an excellent cover of this song. Interesting fact is Shinedown before they gotten big, they played this song at local Jacksonville (Lynyrd Skynyrd's Hometown), Florida's bar once owned by widow of Ronnie Van Zandt.
Skynyrd is a Jacksonville Florida, Southern Rock Band from the 70's...got to see them in concert in 1974. The lead singer and a few of the band members died in a plane crash sometime in 1977. You're pronouncing it right Dave.
Thanks for this one, just listened to the song a few days back while unwinding, glad to see that you also feel the same of it. Your a good man dave, Nice reaction, lost my dad a 7 years ago, miss the man every day, cherish the times the best you can. Enjoyed watching you 2 thanks again
First time watcher here so gotta say " Ehllow Gahvnuh"!! Sorry just "YANKEEN" Your Chain 😜. So a couple band members went to the same Highschool and had a P.E. coach named Leonard Skinner and they made fun of the name as kids do " LYNYRD SKYNYRD" You can practically hear it now huh? My favorite top ( maybe you already played?) Gimme Back My Bullets, That Smell, Saturday Night Special and of course Give Me Three Steps. Looking forward to more. Peace 🕊️☮️
Yall are awesome I just seen this one. Much love from Lawton Fort Sill Oklahoma keep up the great work. Ps you both are good looking people when are yall having kids. Lol ❤️
How wasn’t I subscribed before now? Been an “Office Bloker” for years; I’ve been a ginger for life. I fixed the subscription issue so that was a start haha Had to let you know, we’re proud of all the hard work you’ve put into your multiple channels. Now I’m just waiting to see how good your cooking skills are getting, especially since you also can grow/raise a few yummy ingredients it sounds like! Anyway, see you at the Patreon for that family guy and the Office, eventually at some point too. Enjoy your Sunday evening, with the smarter half too, sir. 🎉 (I assume she’s scary smart Dave lol) tell her thank you; we really appreciate her carving out some of her limited free time for us here. ❤
Have 30+ acres of land? Where I am in America my 1/3 of an acre in property taxes destroys me every year. I like you office bloke guys, and I see how much you guys really consider how much it might be better in the US, it is not as good as it seems. Stay where you are, don't come here unless you want to suffer, trust me.
