I love all the details you caught in this MV!!! Fun fact: this was a *summer* release 😂 but the creepy vibes are based on the Korean tradition of telling scary stories to ward off the summer heat with chills! The song is about toxic and obsessive love. The MV is highly inspired by the horror movie Us, and together with the song lyrics tell the story of the girls’ dopplegangers killing them and turning them into dolls so they can be together forever, because they love them so much. If you check out the dance practice or a live stage you’ll see there’s a lot of cool marionette-type movements in the choreo too! And the girl with the pink/red hair is Gahyeon! She’s the maknae and a master of facial expressions!

Nope, not Halloween. This is Dreamcatcher's version of a summer song. 😉 They are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's backing vocals is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.

Summertime in Korea is traditionally the time when people go to watch horror movies, and gather around camp fires and tell creepy stories about ghosts. So in one of those summers, the Dreamcatcher members went together to watch Jordan Peele's movie 'Us'. They loved it so much, so they decided to make a horror song out it. This MV is inspired by the movie and the Doppelganger myth, which says that once one meets their evil double, or Shadow, on a dark night, their face will be the last thing they see, as they will be replaced by it. BEcause is about obsession, turned to madness and murder. It's not just a song, but an art project spanning across Music, Dance, Cinematography and Poetry/Lyrics. The BE part is capitalized because it refers to the Chinese character for Sadness - BI (悲). Because of Sadness. In the MV, the Shadows do all this, to entertain their sadness. This Chinese character is represented in the dance pose with the hands over the head and the fingers spread (another clue). The format of the MV is a murder mystery. The viewer is put in a position of a detective, trying to solve the puzzle from clues hidden in the MV, it's cinematography (eg half of the scenes are shot in light, half in darkness - Light and Shadow), the ambiguous beautiful lyrics in Korean can be interpreted in two ways, and there are also clues in the choreography (like the Tethered forming a line, that is a wall, holding a mirror, from which Mother emerges and chokes the person outside the mirror - a tribute to Us. Or the captive black figures - a tribute to Dollhouse and The House of Wax). Or Gahyeon's smile and frown, and everybody looking like dolls. In fact, just before releasing the MV, Dreamcatcher appeared on a variety show dressed as Sherlock Holmses, trying to solve a mystery! This was a fun clue for what was coming! There are so many clues that are hidden in the MV, the lesser known BEcause Dance MV, the choreography and the creepy lyrics. But everything is hidden in plain sight. And the song is hidden in a bright, sweet album called "Summer Holiday", full of summer bops... The MV didn't get subtitles for the first 10 days of it's release. And some sweet naive people thought it was just the first ever Dreamcatcher summer bop talking about love and oppas! That they were somehow turned into Twice. These people were so shocked to learn that this is a dark horror song instead. Poor things... Hints: The clothes in the lobby belong to the victims of the Doppelgangers. We never see any murder scenes in the MV, except from one. The other 5 are hidden in the choreography and the MV or are implied in the lyrics, while the last one involves eating the apple that came from inside the mirror. The black figures are the Collection, the original people who are turned into living dolls, unable to escape. The rap part tells us all about it. They're there to entertain. This is by far the most complicated art project Dreamcatcher ever made. The level of the details is insane, and a year later people keep finding new things about it. And this song was Gahyeon's best Era. She plays Mother, who in the end merges with the Shadow Queen JiU in a cocoon and they both rule the Underworld. This was confirmed in a later episode of Dreamcatcher Mind.

BEcause is about "Possessive Love". The MV is based on the horror movie "Us", where the protagonists has doppelgangers whose goal is to replace them.

Gotta love that horror summer bop. As I recall from when it was released the video is inspired by the movie Us, by Jordan Peele. There is a ton of mirror and double imagery. That first scene on the checker floor with most of the girls in a line (a mirror) and Jiu and Gahyeon leaning towards one such moment. Gahyeon then breaks through the mirror to grab her "double".

Dreamcatcher really are concept queens, they always incorporate storytelling into all their MVs. Especially the Nightmare Arc, which they spread over two years worth of comebacks! Their discography is 100% gender neutral and they're also the queens of song covers! They're also known for not changing the pronouns in song covers, even when the song is meant to be sung by a man. There's so much to explore by Dreamcatcher that you really can't find something not to love about them. OH MY GOD YES YES YES! I was hoping that you guys were going to react to this and you guys did, I clicked so fast when I saw the notification they all did such a Phenomenal Job like always this whole Music Video was just Amazing! Jiu killed it with her Vocals, Dancing, and her Visuals just everything was Wow her Vocals were Crazy, her Dancing in the Middle was just Yes, her at the beginning with those pigtails was just Adorable and Lethal st the same time, and her little smiles that she kept giving to the camera was just Lethal! This is a single comeback, part of their summer holiday album. Not connected to a story. The next story starts with Maison ( their latest comeback, which they got their first win for!!!) came after BEcause. This M/V was a story about obsessive love and took inspiration from the hit horror movie US that has to do with doppelgängers. If you like choreo and live performances I would suggest checking out their dance performances and live shows. They have great live vocals and are great dancers and performers. I’m so excited for you guys to keep exploring Dreamcatcher. I have never been into music artists before and I just love them so much.

I'm so glad you guys are getting into Dreamcatcher. They are my favorite K-pop group of all time. All of their songs are amazing, and you should definitely check them out when you can. Not just their title tracks but their B-sides are just as good. A few of my favorite are: Can't get you out of my mind, Black and White, Red Sun, and Starlight. But in the end who am I trying to fool because all of their songs are my favorite. They are amazing and fantastic performers. Well well well... BEcause is meant to be summer song (grasp, shock, surpraise...) which in the Kpop industry, it is meant to be fun, cheery and bubbly .... unless the group is Dreamcatcher and it is their take on a "summer" song which is based on a Korean tradition where you tell ghost stories or visit haunted places so that you can feel the "chills" to fight the summer heat. Officially the song unravels a story of an obsession and longing for love. The capitalise BE in the title is used in context as the Hanja character 悲’ (‘BE’) as they sound alike and the word meaning sadness, and the title BEcause could be loosely translate as the cause of sadness, and paired with the line BEcause I like you or BEcause I love you, the sadness is caused by liking or loving someone. Also, the whole creepy toxic vibe is link to the choreography where there is a scene of someone choking another, and the lyrics about "forever mine, even your breath" and then "your face blue...like an ocean view" kind of reflect someone being strangled until the fact turns blue etc. Also, the MV plot theme has another layer that officially borrowed quite a bit of plot elements from the horror movie "Us" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers who were forced to live underground depraved of the "finer" things and are trying to are trying to take over their "privileged" above ground counterparts...won't go into much details as it would be better if you watch the movie yourself if you haven't). There are a lot of details in the MV that point to this such as the movie "Us" which has scenes depicting a hall of mirror, someone being captured and replaced, the carnival; similarly the choreography also uses the movie themes such as the doppelgangers holding hand in a chain, the slight side to side head tilts, ending pose of the center member which two hand on her face, mirrored choreography etc.. There are also a few easter eggs for the doppelgangers concept such as the MV is 3:13 minute long (coincidence? I think not) , and that the opening scene and ending scene has the members in completely different outfits (with the ending outfit more whimsical), as well as the completely drain symmetrical hourglass at the end indicating that at some point, the doppelgangers replaced their original counterpart. More impressively, musicality, it plays into the theme of opposite doppelgangers where there is a two part chorus (whimsical and cute, and a more rock follow up) and two part bridge (soft vocals followed up by a deep spoken rap with atmospherically vocals behind) trying to show this mirror duality. Also, I love the Pyscho volin homage during the rap part of the song.

I think this song is telling the story about an obsessive psychotic lover and the lyrics looks like telling the words from the first view of the psychotic lover and also Dreamcatcher had official announced that the MV is a tribute/inspired by the US horror movie 'Us' which is really cool and creepy and yet sooooo real that this actually happen in our daily life. Oh by the way there is the famous Beethoven Fur Elise tune, again it seems the music composer is sooooo knowledgeable! Beethoven could possible be the horrible creepy lover as well (if you read up Beethoven's biography!) Somehow I think Dreamcatcher made this song to remind all of us to watch out this kind of character person and protect yourself better and also at the same time telling a story about the type of people which mainstream media and musics always avoiding talking about this kind of human social interacting issues, which again made Dreamcatcher soooo special in like almost the global scale music industry =O

If you love horror and want to hear some harder rock sound from DreamCatcher, start with their debut song Chase Me. That begins a six-song storyline (some say seven songs but that last optional song/ alternate ending is a Japanese-language release that hits harder than all the rest of the songs in that arc combined) called the Nightmare arc. Chase Me Good Night Fly High (optional, you COULD watch this one first if you really wanted because it is the prequel to everything. I am listing them in order of release; we had to wait for this one in order for the story to even begin to make sense. If you want, you can 'cheat' and watch this one first, or you could be surprised like the rest of us were) You and I What Piri Breaking Out (optional, Japanese release, said to be an alternate or even the 'true' ending to the storyline). And there are other songs after this that have nothing to do with the nightmare arc but some of their later releases have little throwback Easter eggs in them. BeCause certainly did have a LOT of Easter eggs from the Nightmare arc! I am really enjoying your reactions so far! Please keep at it! :)

Just to add to the other comments...summer in Korea (and Japan) is usually associated with spooky things (watching horror movies, taking turns telling scary stories, or exploring abandoned buildings) because they will send chills down your spine and makes you forget about the heat. Of course, going to the beach/pool and having cold food/drink also popular during summer in Korea. That being said, as far as I know, spooky summer vibe never been used in kpop so Dreamcatcher is the first one. They did it with style and very fitting to their concept 🤩

they sing about "kidnap" your crush in your beautiful hotel (that has a "cute" park with mechanics atractions) and a bassement with flowers to avoid the reject, BE in the title sounds like sadness in korean (or something like that), so the intention of the song is not just you like your crush and your fellings for him/her/them but the sadness that provokes the reject and how you turn nuts and build a place to finish the sorrow. Love my queens and fun fact been in the business for about 6 years but they first started off as MINX for 1 year and later debuted as dreamcatcher and another fun fact. I also see a lot of alice in wonderland references which leads me to believe the song is not about physical doppelgangers but ones of different personalities - alice undergoes somewhat of an identity crisis and there are many split personalities in the story. although most of the lyrics can be read as obsessive love, the start of the bridge which often reveals the real intent goes "It’s fine even if you refuse me, another voice of mine". in this light it could be about one's internal struggle for control, perhaps between the good side and the evil side. one imagery to support this is sua giving herself an apple through a broken mirror. mirrors in past dc mvs show reflections but the dark side. thus this scene suggest ones dark voice is trying to tempt or poison you, depending on which metaphorical reference you want to use with the apple. there is also a short screech sound during dami's rap, taken from the movie psycho which highlights multiple personality disorder. so some of the lyrics which seem psychotic like "face turning blue, like an ocean view" might be representing one side trying to kill the other for control.

The BE in BEcause is capitalized for the word “sad” in Chinese, the song represents an obsessive yet sad love

They are very dark - I LOVE IT! Aside from what you caught, there are lyrics of 'Smile for me it's only the two of us in this dark room' and while they said 'painting' you caught on to the doll-like. I view it more as probably kidnapping and Stockholm Syndrome (gay version) with non-consensual dollification. A LOT of their mvs have that kind of theme - dark love, hypnosis, control, stockholm syndrome elements... All dipped in lovely Gaycatcher-ness. They remind of Evanescence in style (grew up on that group - high praise) with 'Le Maison' reminding me of 'Within Temptation' (both groups you'd probably love).

Gahyeons facial expression mastery is legendary

For context, Dreamcatcher has only two currently completed lore series that comprise more than one song. Those are the Nightmare Series (6 main songs; Chase Me, Good Night, Fly High, You and I, What, and Piri) and the Dystopia Trilogy (3 songs; Scream, Boca, and Odd Eye). BEcause is a stand-alone story and song and is not connected with any others. Their most recent debut is the start of the new Apocalypse Trilogy and the song is called Maison. You should check it out. Anyway, after much thought and watching the BEcause music video dozens of times, these are my theories and ideas for what I suspect is the story with this comeback: Jiu runs a carnival and circus resort hotel. She is a mystical puppeteer and controls a group of five dolls to do her bidding around the resort. My guess is that she is after Gahyeon who is still human and not a doll yet. Then at the end, Jiu captures her and makes her a doll like the others. It's important to note that Gahyeon is very front and center in this video and the main character of the story, followed by Jiu. Gahyeon is also the only one to really make distinct facial expression changes, perhaps signifying her awareness to the audience or representing that she's the only one still human amongst the dolls. It has been said that the theme and story is heavily inspired by Jordan Peele's "Us" so perhaps the theme of doppelgangers has something to do with it too. I have actually seen the film "Us" and I can see many references to it in the video, even in the choreography. I think the scene where Handong is standing alone with a pink skirt and literally sees her own feet being pulled away under a curtain could be representative of her being replaced by a doll or doppelganger and that's who is really standing there and not the real Handong. If you pay attention, you'll see that the girls at the beginning of the video all have different outfits than those at the end of the video. This could imply that they have been replaced by their doppelgangers or vice versa. It's hard to say which version of the girls are the real ones versus their doppelgangers, though it's quite often showcased how there are two of each of them in multiple scenes. Jiu also has a large hourglass that she flips at the start of the song. At the end of the song, the hourglass sand stops and so do the dolls. She gives us a smirk, and then we hear a laugh. I think that's how she controls them. When it's flipped and the sand is moving, the dolls can be active. Power over time and the ability to puppet people seems to be Jiu's powers or capabilities to some degree or she has relics that help her, like the hourglass. It's possible that Jiu needs to capture humans and then do something to make them into dolls - like feeding them a cursed apple? - or she creates dolls that she can control in their likeness by killing their normal form and then putting their soul into the doll, thus making a fake version or doppelganger of them that she can use for her bidding. So Jiu lures in unsuspecting guests to her carnival and circus resort hotel and then snatches them away for herself. One of the final scenes where Gahyeon is on the throne and Jiu caresses her face is important. Gahyeon's line during this moment is "Because I love you". As she says that line, her facial expression changes from happy to more trance-like, which indicates that she may have fallen under Jiu's power and has become her doll. There's a double-meaning here too because of Gahyeon's line. She loves Jiu, but that love may be forced or coerced by Jiu herself because of her power to turn people into dolls and have them do her bidding. Gahyeon has no choice but to love Jiu because Jiu is forcing her to do so as her new doll that has been added to the collection. This all ties back into the song's theme of having a very obsessive and dangerous love for someone else to the point of stalking and controlling them. What's even more interesting is that love, by definition, must be freely given. You cannot force love otherwise it's not love at all. Thus, Jiu seems to be seeking for love, but can't find it, so she becomes evil and obsessive over creating a fake collection of friends that will always "love" her.

As you might be able to already tell, Dreamcatcher has been extremely lore heavy ever since debut, and have spawned a number of narrative arcs and interconnected music videos (currently on the 3rd with Apocalypse). However this and Deja Vu are their own stories respectively, as Dreamcatcher now makes standalones as part of "Special Album" release. Most of the stories haven't been officially defined per se, but the fandom go along the most accepted theories we've inferred ourselves through our own analysis and based on what the members themselves have vaguely described in various interviews. You've read the story for BEcause in the comments by now, but somebody on the subreddit brought up the case that this is actually a proper "murder ballad", which I wholeheartedly agree with. This murderous obsession and toxic possessiveness coincidentally run some thematic parallels with Avenged Sevenfold's "A Little Piece of Heaven", which is probably the most infamous murder ballad in the Metal scene. Both talk about preserving their love through death, so that they stay the same forever and their love never wanes; in the most fucked up sense of course.
