The holders of the third and final winning ticket from January's record-smashing Powerball jackpot have finally been identified. Months after three lottery players matched six lucky numbers in the $1.6 billion drawing, officials revealed that Southern California couple Marvin and Mae Acosta came forward Friday to claim their prize. The Acostas' winning ticket is the largest in California history. #InsideEdition

The reason you can't be anonymous is to prevent fraud. For example, if you buy tickets with others who chip in, you then hide the fact you won from others and claim all the money. It's to prevent that. Also it is to prevent people who owes debt from skipping payment if they won the lottery. Also to prevent spouses from divorcing their partner and then hide the fact they won the lottery. That's why most states pass law that you have to reveal your identity when you win.

the state is required to release the lottery winners name and town. The media just picked up on the story that they claimed the money and then suddenly moved... because it was notable. Hell, I'd move too. They haven't been able to do anything to prevent releasing winners' names for any state lottery, it has to do with being up front about there being actual winners etc... but they should allow pseudonyms, if you ask me, to prevent the mobbing from charities etc.

Oh hell yeah. I made a plan just in case I was a lucky winner of that jackpot. New just what I was gonna do. I was gonna set my myself and another family member out of our house and take all the directly important items with us. We'd do this at the start of the month when I'd collect the money because some times it takes time to actually use it. Some one once said 3 to 15 days depending. We would stay in our location and ask the lottery people to give us some time before letting out who won for security factors, hopefully they would be kind enough to do so. If not then I'd go home at night to collect all important items. Then in the following days have most of the other items removed for donation of trash. My other relative would never be known to the public and be kept in hiding just in case. I on the other hand would also be in hiding but would come out to have my house gutted and completely refurbished. Including excellent security. I would move back in after about 3 to 6 month. By this time the shock would have calmed. If anything happened with in that year enough to bother me to much, I'd look for a new place and put my other house up for rent.

I was so upset, but I called it that three people were gonna win.

In which it can be a real burden to win given when people find out you did, they go absolutely crazy because they know you have a lot of money. I do not blame them at all for doing it the way they did. No one deserves to be threatened, spammed with letters, or be burdened by random strangers hounding them for money. It doesn't matter what they want, the official rules say their names and info must be made public. If it wasn't, how would you verify the validity of a winner? If winners were allowed to remain anonymous, there would be skepticism surrounding the legitimacy of the lottery. Think about it; if the jackpot grew to 1 billion and the winner was never disclosed, the lottery would be facing all sorts of backlash and accusations that it was fixed or that there was no winner and this was all a marketing ploy.
