A sword wields no strength unless...
Yeah, you get it. This is a short piece from the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that my roommate began his first journey through recently. The piece is very simple, but very beautiful, and I decided to use it as my shakuhachi practice for a bit. That's where this idea came from.
The shakuhachi is extremely difficult for me to play, and I had to do so many takes to get a useable one for this video. Ultimately, it still didn't sound great. I used a lot of compression and doubled the leading melody with a synth to make the shakuhachi less harsh, and I think it turned out alright. The synths were meant to give a synthetic feel similar to many of the sounds present in the original soundtrack, which I adore. I also had to tune the shakuhachi track in post, which, while isn't great. As I did this though, an unintended but welcome side effect was the slightly less natural feel to the acoustic instrument, which made it, to me, almost sound more like the artificial wind instruments present all over this soundtrack. Ultimately, shakuhachi playing is a struggle, but I wanted to put this cover out and it turned out a lot better than I was expecting!
Since I've been back from MAGFest, I've been arranging a lot, but haven't had as much time to actually record said arrangements. Now that I'm settled back in, I have two very exciting covers to release within the coming weeks, but I figured that this piece would be a nice one to put out in the meantime.
