Lockheed company film from 1973 on the new L-1011, this one focusing on the British charter holiday airline, Court Line Aviation. Neat footage of the Palmdale plant, construction, test flying, great early '70s soundtrack, etc. Court Line Aviation was founded in 1957, and ceased operations in 1974. Be sure to check my channel for the best in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos! / classicairli. .

My mother worked for Court Line at Luton airport and gave birth to me four days after this Tristar was delivered, I still live by the airport to this day!

I think Court Line was out of business by the time I used to visit the airport as a kid on Sundays out to watch the planes in the mid 70’s at that lookout area near the runway with the cafe. I only remember Britannia and Monarch airlines dominating the airport. But then I was only 10. So my memory must be patchy.

I was fortunate enough to be a flight engineer on the amazing L-1011 starting in the mid 90's. It' was always my favorite aircraft and still is. They don't make aircraft like this anymore. It was way ahead of its time.

I’m dating myself now, but in my now 30-year airline career, by far the L-1011 was the best plane I ever flew. If I could still fly it I would. I have nothing bad to say about it. Spacious, ergonomic, quiet cockpit with amazing visibility and outstanding systems redundancy. Nothing I’d rather fly. Thanks, Lockheed! You were way ahead of your time (and leaps ahead of your competition)!

The Tristar was trijet masterpiece, complete at all levels. You can't get much better than that.
@2300magnum
@2300magnum 8 лет назад
+João Branco - Sorry but the L1011 was flawed from its conception due to that S-duct air intake.
@joaobranco1063
@joaobranco1063 8 лет назад
+2300magnum No flaw in that. Once the S-duct was perfect it was advantageous. The 727 had some minor problems with it that were worked out and it was fine.
@2300magnum
@2300magnum 8 лет назад
+João Branco Having the S-duct caused a loss of efficiency to the tail engine by 10-15% The RB-211 engines were still being developed by Rolls Royce to fulfill their full thrust potential which wasn't realised until the late 70's which meant that the plane couldn't take off with a full payload. Lockheed then introduced the 500 series (a shorter fuselage and bigger fuel tanks) to give it a better travel distance. But don't get me wrong; the TriStar is one of if not the best looking plane to fly in the 20th century.
@mhamma6560
@mhamma6560 6 лет назад
S duct didn't really matter -- L10 still was fastest in the sky during its time. Flew between LAX-ATL many times and the L10 always had the shortest flights. Was a great airplane ahead of its time which brought its demise. Too much $ in tech.

Yep, and they nearly bankrupted themselves over the engine development (and the L-1011 Tristar project as a whole), and only survived because they were bailed out by the UK Goverment, which although controversial at the time, saved the company and consequently was a good decision in hindsight.

One of the best built planes EVER. It had great style, (alot of pinache, actually), with form and function. It was an over-engineered, over built plane with plenty of redundancy-well ahead of its time. This plane came from a generation were anything was thought possible. I remember back in 1999 when I moved to ATL, I would RACE to the airport to see these beasts. I was extremely fortunate to work in cabin services for a few months and got to work around them. Not many people can make that claim. So sad to see these planes are gone. Watching this was depressing, and saddened me.

The Tristar. God's own airplane. One of the best civil airliners ever built. Safe, comfy, stylish and one of the largest cockpits ever built... Most pilots who flew on both DC-10 and l-1011 will prefer the 1011. The DC-10 was Douglas's attempt to compete with a cheaper airliner. We all know how it ended with that rear cargo door... Lockheed just sucked at selling it. The perfect plane should have been conceived by Lockheed, Built by Boeing and marketed by Douglas...

You have just brought back very happy memories for me with this. I flew on this actual aircraft from Luton to Barcelona once in the 1970's It was meant to be one of their wonderful BAC 1-11's but we were told that the demand was so big they put the Tristar on. It was my first wide body jet experience, can you imagine the wonder in this young lads eyes when climbing the stairs into this one! I used to love the children's gift packs Court Line gave away in flight. There were cardboard pre cut stewards and stewardesses a cardboard plane that would fly as well as many other things. I flew a number of times with them through their package holiday arm Clarksons. Even getting to the airport was an event! We would catch the train up from Devon to Paddington, then the tube to Finchley Road where they had their "London Terminal" you would put your bags in there and then they had Court Line busses painted in the same bright colours that would transfer you from the center of London to Luton. It was always a game mum played with me, to see if I could guess what colour aircraft we would be flying on. I flew on every colour by the end of their company!

My first ever flight was on a Court Line Tristar from LondonLuton Airport. It was mine and my mums first time flying, dad had flown whilst on National Service in the Army. There was a storm whilst were waiting to depart and some of the windows blew in ! When we got our seat assignment we were seated in the last 3 seats at the back. My Grandmother, ever the optimist, said not to worry because if the aircraft crashed, the tail always survived!! I have a vague recollection of the aircraft being pink ? Fantastic upload, a great 70's soundtrack indeed! I've always thought of the L-1011 as a spiritual successor to the Connie, Lockheed pushing the boundaries of what was possible at the time. And let's be honest... Tri-jets just looked _cool_ with that extra engine, and the Tristar was probably the best looking of them all. It's a shame that they didn't fly for longer, but such is progress.

It was a perfect storm for Lockheed. The RB211 engines were plagued with delays, and it was the ONLY option for the L1011. Due to the delays, many airlines chose the DC-10 over the 1011. Lockheed’s marketing and sales also weren’t as adept as Douglas’ equivalents since this was Lockheed’s first passenger plane in decades (didn’t have the inroads like Douglas and Boeing). Although it was considered a mild success at over 200 built, it was still a massive loss to Lockheed, and they stopped production in 1984. Lockheed never made another passenger airplane after. It truly was a plane of legend. Lockheed managed to make something that both passengers and pilots loved. It’s sad we’ll probably never see another like it again in this age of “cattle call” flying.

It's ironic that this L-1011 promotion film that came out in 1973 talks about the plane's technology and capabilities when in fact the L-1011 itself had already suffered its first major crash the year before on December 29, 1972 . The L1011 was a beautiful plane. However, the same cannot be said for Court Line, a UK holiday charter airline which was the 60's/70's equivalent of Ryanair! Court Line operated the L1011 for about 1 year prior to their bankrputcy. Note the 10 abreast seating. In that era most airlines offered 9 abreast on the L1011 and GF in the original configuration actually offered 8 abreast in Y. The seat pitch on the Court Line L1011's was pretty poor too. Don't for one moment imagine that holiday charter passengers got meals like those pictured in this vid on their flights to Spain or other destinations around the med. Most Court Line holiday charters were operated by BAC 1-11 which featured the infamous 'seat back' catering concept. On the L1011 it looks as if the meal was probably served rather than being in a box placed in a locked compartment in the back of the seat in front of you which was unlocked by the cabin crew with a key during the flight, but no way was it of the quality shown in this promotional video.

Court Line operated two TriStars, G-BAAA (yellow livery, named Halcyon Days) and G-BAAB (pink livery, officially named Halcyon Breeze but nicknamed The Pink Lady). Both were scrapped with other airlines.

This aircraft was the star of the movie The Langoliers, great looking air craft. Technically it was way ahead of the competition but few airlines because it being more expensive took them on. Often thought about where the APU was installed on these Tri Jets as the number 2 engine exhausted about where APU’s would normally be.🇦🇺
