Marta was so dumb for not putting Terin on floor. Espically after Marta took Kupets off Balance Beam, what made her think she could have gone out there and do a floor routine. Terin had she hit (which conisdering her past history on floor when put under the pressure) could have brought in a 9.45+. Marta was stupid.
Considering Terin had a 9.2 in the prelims and Marta doing her usual and going off of scores, Kupets only scored 0.038 higher than Terin on beam in prelims so she figured it would be a good rest for Courtney off of bars, but don't forget Carly literally stopped on the bars too.
Courtney McCool's mistake on floor during prelims was just a fluke and was easily fixable during team finals, considering Kupets was injured, Marta should've put McCool in floor and replaced Carly on bars as well, maybe using her for beam instead of Mohini. Marta's attempt to punish McCool for her mistakes eventually cost USA team gold
Terin would have probably only scored around a high 9.3 to low 9.4 while Kupets potentially could have scored higher (think 9.5 range) had she been able to complete that stupid dance combo. Al Fong composed Terin’s routines that were full of built-in deductions on her dance elements, Terin always had issues completing her dance elements, and her line and form were worse than Kupets so she would have more deductions there. Shame those dance elements were worth so much because Terin’s high tumbling difficulty simply wasn’t rewarded under this code just like how Kupets’ beautiful tumbling here was pretty much erased by that one dance element error.
J Who knows. Rumor has it that McCool was an emotional mess that whole night during prelims and distracted the rest of the team. She was credited with combinations at trials that she wouldn’t have gotten credit for in Athens by this strict judging. Marta couldn’t have known that Carly wouldn’t repeat her 9.6 bars score or that Kupets would blow it on that dance element. Putting Mohini in for beam may have been a mistake since she wasn’t going to score that high but Marta decided beam is where to play it safe with a “secure”’performance than one where McCool could have hit but probably wouldn’t have if she repeated the mistakes she made in prelims. Plus, I’m not sure if McCool would have scored much higher than Mohini considering she didn’t really make any connections. What screwed the US was Kupets aggravating her injury during competition and being unable to compete up to her standard.
This code was so strange with its over emphasis of those stupid dance combos, and was the death kneel of the 10.0 system. A routine like this with really superb tumbling from 3 out of 4 lines with that form and those landings only scored a 9.1+ because of a major crash and burn on a triple pirouette stumble with no connecting split leap. I get that was a major eff up and deserves a deduction but that one error totally disregarded some excellent tumbling.
It really is unfair to the fans in addition to the athletes. The crowd wants the best tumbling to be rewarded. They dont want to see someone with mediocre/flawed tumbling win because thhey could do a lot of leap/jump combos. And thats exactly what happened throughout this quadrennium.
it's not that the 2004 COP forced you to do tricky dance (ie, leap and jump) combos, if you had Simone Biles level tumbling then four super E elements (each worth 0.3) would be enough for 10.0 SV already, but nobody was tumbling at that level. And many high value spins were either not yet invented or not commonly trained (e.g. the Mitchell, Gomez, Mustafina, Memmel etc.). So based on the pool of elements that gymnasts trained back in 2004, you had to do dance combos to achieve 10.0 SV. Whereas a top gymnast from the last 10 years competing under the 2004 COP could easily reach 10.0 SV without those leap and jump combos.
Apparently, she was trying to turn on the opposite leg than she usually uses and that's why she messed up. She had a stress fracture here in her hip and couldn't turn on her normal leg.
