You have to respect Courtney Pine for carving out a career from playing improvised music and for maintaining his presence in the public eye for so long. There is no doubt that he has practiced for years and has considerable skills and has honed a strong tone. Unfortunately his playing is often ugly and showy. Kenny G isn’t really a good benchmark. Check out Ernie Watts with Quartet West. He could do everything that Courtney does, but has chosen not to.
