Courtney Vandersloot. 2x WNBA All-Star. 2x All-WNBA Second Team. 4x WNBA assist leader. 4x WNBA peak performer. Turkish National League Champion and MVP in 2017. The first D-1 player, male or female, to have accumulated 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in their career. She broke the single season assist record in 2019 with 300 assists on the year, breaking a record previously held by one Courtney Vandersloot (258 assists in 2018).
If you didn’t know that Sloot, a Gonzaga grad, is one really gifted passer, now you know. She owns the two highest single season assist tallies all-time in the WNBA and contributed 300 of the Chicago Sky’s 733 assists. With 22 at the helm, Chicago finished with the 3rd best record in the Eastern Conference and that’s really saying something, because the two teams that finished above them had the two best records in the league (The Washington Mystics finished 26-8, and the Connecticut Sun finished 23-11). Obviously, while steals aren’t the best defensive metric, Sloot’s stole the ball a significant amount (to the tune of 1.4 steals per game, tied for her career best). That is to say that not just an offensive playmaker, but a defensive one as well.
Fellow pure point guard and Gonzaga great John Stockton once said of Sloot:
“I don’t want to dramatize it too much but she’s like Gretzky in hockey. There is something that separates Courtney from others.” (link below)
