There are seven types of wild cranes that can be observed in Japan, but Tancho, or Japanese crane (Grus japonensis) also known as the red-crowned, is the only wild crane that breeds in Japan, and is one of the largest birds in Japan, reaching a total length of 140 cm and a wingspan of 240 cm. It was once thought to be extinct due to overhunting and development of its wetland habitat, but in 1924 more than 10 birds were rediscovered in the Kushiro Wetlands. Later, it was designated as a natural monument in 1935 and a special natural monument in 1952 and protected, and thanks to the start of corn feeding activities in winter when food is scarce in Tsurui Village and other areas. There are currently around 1,800 birds. Numbers are recovering.
日本では7種類の野生の鶴を観察できるのですが、タンチョウは日本で繁殖する唯一の野生の鶴で、全長140cm、翼開長240cmに達する日本最大級の鳥です。乱獲と生息地である湿原の開発により一時は絶滅したと考えられていましたが、1924年に釧路湿原で10数羽が再発見されました。その後、1935年に天然記念物、1952年に特別天然記念物に指定されて保護されるとともに、鶴居村などでエサ不足の冬季にトウモロコシの給餌活動を始めたことにより、現在は約1,800羽に数が回復しています。
It is said that when Tanchos mate, they stay together until their partner dies. Before the spring breeding season, Tanchos enter the love season from February to March, and engage in courtship behavior with the same partner every year. The most famous of these is the courtship dance!
タンチョウはつがいになると、パートナーが死んでしまうまで添い遂げると言われています。春の繁殖期を前に2月から3月にかけてタンチョウは恋の季節を迎え、毎年同じパートナーとの求愛行動をとります。その中でも有名なのが求愛ダンス！
Male and female Tanchos have the same shape, so it is impossible to tell the male and female from their appearance. In the case of the pair introduced in the video, one of them happens to be wearing a leg ring (a metal recognition tag worn as part of conservation efforts). If you look at the courtship dance focusing on this leg ring, you will clearly see that it is not just one expressing its love passionately, but rather both the male and female taking turns expressing their love with the same amount of passion. This courtship dance is repeated to raise the spirits, and the pair heads off to breed in the spring.
タンチョウは雌雄の姿かたちが同じなので、外見では雌雄を判別できません。動画で紹介したペアの場合、たまたま片方は足環（保護活動の一環で装着している金属製の認識標識）を付けています。この足環に注目して求愛ダンスを見てみると、どちらか一方が熱烈に愛情表現をしているのではなく、雌雄の双方が同じ熱量で交互に愛情表現をしていることがよくわかりますね。この求愛ダンスを繰り返して気持ちを高め、つがいは春の繁殖に向かいます。
Because the Tanchos move fast, the video was shot at 120 frames/second and played back at 60 frames/second, making it 2x slower motion. Some parts were made in more slow motion.
タンチョウの動きは速いので、動画は120フレーム／秒で撮影して60フレーム／秒で再生することにより、2倍スローモーションの動画にしました。一部は更にスローにしてみました。
