He has connections to major brands like Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein (brands that emma works with). They became friends when they collaborated on a video on Derek’s channel (you can check that out ) . From there he helped Emma get in touch with these big companies and brought her into Cosmopolitan. The big brands didn’t choose her, Derek contacted them to help Emma. ( I know about all this because I work in the middle) . It’s not about merit, his luck is about contacts, not talent
