Covering Rock Classics on the Ancient Gayageum

Great Big Story

In Seoul, South Korea, a young musician is mixing a centuries-old Korean instrument with the music of rock legends. Luna Lee plays the gayageum, a box-like string instrument that dates back to 400 B.C. However, Lee thought it was wasteful to only play the traditional music associated with the instrument, so her repertoire features covers from Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Nirvana, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and other rock luminaries. With millions of views on her RU-vid channel ( / luna422422 , Lee is bringing Korean traditions of the past and popular culture of the present to a whole new audience.

She is an amazing beautiful talented girl , so sweet too. I hope she goes to greater things and gets real recognition for her talent. She deserves all the praise she gets. Well done Luna 👍

I'm Chinese, I would like to tell you all that this ISN'T a Chinese instrument. Sure, it's a variation of the original instrument, the Guzheng, but it's Korean. Even Japan have it's own variation, also known as the Koto. Please people, stop assuming that it's Chinese when it's not.
@livedandletdie
@livedandletdie 5 лет назад
It's a Chinese zither. Zithers are from China, and to say otherwise is like saying a guitar made in Sweden isn't a Guitar, because it wasn't made in Greece. Yes the Gayageum is a traditional instrument in Korea, but still it's a Chinese zither. It's just a different model specific to Korea.
@mintyfresh4855
@mintyfresh4855 5 лет назад
@@livedandletdie Agreed. You cannot take away historical origins. Gayageum and Koto are variations of the Guzheng. That's a fact. It's like saying a tiger is not from the same ancestry as a cat or an ocelot or a lion. They're not Chinese instruments but variations of the Guzheng which is still a zither family. Because they tweaked it to their own cultural manifestations, the gayageum is a Korean instrument and the Koto a Japanese instrument, but they retain their ancestry from the Guzheng. After all they look and function nearly the same.
@realeuphoniism
@realeuphoniism 5 лет назад
@@livedandletdie Not all zithers are from China. There are plenty of them from around Europe. It's just that the ones that look like the 古筝, the 琴 and the 가야금, are from China originally. It's important to remember where they came from yes, but it's not good to disregard the differences of style, sound, and make that makes each distinct.
@user-kd1eb6vc7y
@user-kd1eb6vc7y 4 года назад
@@livedandletdie so its a Korean Chinese zither? why not simplify things and say a Korean zither? btw its called a Guzheng not a a Chinese zither, and it is more akin to saying that a Jouhikko is not a Talharpa. but then again a Jouhikko isn't a talharpa just as a gayageum isn't a guzheng though they descended from a common ancestor. really a zither is a type of instrument that has spread throughout the world with numerous variations. u wouldn't call a Turkish Qanun a Guzheng because they are incredibly different even if they are still zithers. it like a language family. additionally, there is evidence that the oldest zither came from Mycenae and not china though that is not 100% verified.

Its obvious china has its own variation of the gayageum. the gayageum is an instrument belonging to the long zither family which also include the zheng of china, the koto of japan, the dan tranh of vietnam and the yatag of mongolia. however the gayageum is the version created in korea. it is said in "the history of the three kingdoms" that king gashil of the gaya confederacy ordered wooreuk to create the instrument. even though there is an hypothesis that a more ancient korean version of the gayageum has existed in the shilla dynasty or as far back as the kingdom of the three hans, as far as we know, the first theory stands as more accurate.

people need to calm the hell down "According to the Samguksagi (1145), a history of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, the gayageum was developed around the 6th century in the Gaya confederacy by King Gasil (also known as Haji of Daegaya) after he observed an old Chinese instrument." that old chinese instrument was probably the guzheng and cultures spread so obviously things might look similar so calm the hell down and appreciate some talent

yeah, these kind of channels (trying to build a media company off youtube kind) likes to buy views to boost the brand, they actually loose a lot of money at the beginning, but the view counts allows them to show it to a VC and get really high evaluations, and they then buy more views until the ad & sponsor money breaks even, vox's channel did that too

aren't they more similar than that
@realeuphoniism
@realeuphoniism 5 лет назад
@@howardkurtus7069 Actually if u look at how they are built, played, and used it's easier to see the differences. I'll try my best to differentiate the 3 best known ones: China's 古筝, Japan's 琴, and Korea's 가야금. China's 古筝 is distinguishable by having 21 strings usually, triangular finger plucks, nylon-steel/steel strings, and is tuned to the pentatonic scale of D, E, Gb, A, B. Traditional style of playing is 4 picks on the right hand, but modern style is 4 on both. Style of bending notes is usually noted by bending notes to reach higher notes in a slow motion to give some emotion and quick small presses to make vibrato. Japan's 琴 is distinguished by having 12 or 13 strings for traditional and 25 on modern, rectangular finger plucks, nylon-silk/nylon strings, and is tuned to the pentatonic scale of E, F, A, B, C. Traditional style of playing is 4 picks on the right hand, but modern style is the same but using the left hand to play along with or without picks. Style of bending notes is to bend notes quickly before playing to make a distinct sound and sometimes bending notes down and also doing the same as guzheng with little presses to make vibrato. Korea's 가야금 is distinguished by having 12 or 13 strings on the traditional sanjo and jeongak variants and 21 or 25 for modern variants. No finger plucks are used, silk/silk-nylon strings, and is tuned to the pentatonic scale of D, G, A, D, E, G, A, B, etc. Because there is no picks, the Gayageum is played using the fingers by plucking and flicking, usually in meters of 3/4, 6/8, and 12/8. Also because of not using picks, the Gayageum usually does not incorporate things like the one note repeated quickly that's common in Koto and Guzheng music and the gliss over the all the strings that's also common in Koto and Guzheng music. The modern Gayageum has tried to incorporate that, but it is still hard to do so. Bending notes is very important in Korean music which has a certain bounce to it. Instead of slow/fast deep presses to change the note, the gayageum presses all the way down and back up quickly to make an intense vibrato, but rarely does it do this to actually change the note that is being played.

OK, guy. That is a pretty Asian girl, and a nice instrument. But if the Koreans claim that they have invented this from scratch, I must disagree. Looking back to the history, the Korean peninsula was always a tributary state of China since ancient time until 1894, following by the Japanese rule until 1945... I know South Korea is one of the most advanced country in the world now, they make the best phones, and memory chips etc... but that doesn't mean they can make history. In western world, people are easily convinced on these type of claims, but I can say with confidence that the majority of people from Asian countries including older generation of Korean would recognize this instrument, and tell you they are Chinese GuZheng.

People may say that instrument is not really GuZheng... they sound totally different... I would tell you that even GuZheng has different versions, and makes. That is just a Korean version. Thank you!

Yang Xie korea was tributary state for qing(which is a manchurian dynasty) and yuan(which is a mongolian dynasty) and yes everybody knows that insturment HAS A CHINESE ORIGIN, BTW the national instrument of korea and japan is the guzheng or gayageum or koto however u wanna call them. Japanese and koreans are tired of hearing the same thing:"This is not from Kor/Jpn this is from china" so if anyone of us play music, does it mean we copied greek culture? If we use a light bulb did we copy american culture? There is something called CULTURAL INFLUENCE and every country has been influenced by another in history. Even china, "chinese ink" shouldn't be called like that 'cause it was invented in INDIA or even chinede abacus was invented in mesopotamia instead of china.

Yang Xie, almost nobody cares about how many similar aspects gayageum and other similar instruments share and who invented the first instrument with that shape... like almost nobody cares about who invented the guitar or the violin. She is a Korean Gayageum Maestro, not generically a 'pretty Asian (???) girl'. Why so many Chinese from the PRC are so rude and have such a complex of inferiority???
